wonderful experience from start to finish, Johns transparency 10 out of 10 before arriving to his rural property.
Lovely spacious and clean rooms, well equipped with everything you need to cook in.
Peace and serenity with breathtaking views from front and rear windows 
Abundance of wildlife on literally your balcony, koalas 100m from the room.
John is a lovely bloke who is only to happy to tell you the best and most efficient way to see the island.
Only 28 mins from Kingscote for pub dinner and supermarket 
Do not be put off by other reviews of  a “rough driveway” It’s to protect the wildlife as you drive down his lovely driveway, our rental car a Hyundai i30 was more then enough and it was a very wet visit, just keep your speed down easy.

If your staying on KI this accomodation is a must, your loss if you don’t

Quiet and peaceful rural retreat

We booked the retreat as a quiet spot for a few days over the New Year. It's self-contained and off-grid, with only two double rooms available.
The bed is comfortable, the kitchen has all the necessaries except for an oven (BBQ on the veranda) and the bathroom is good. The laundry is self-service.
John, our host, was very amenable and lives in the opposite end of the building.
Other reviews criticise the driveway. From the tarmac of Hog Bay Road, Old Salt Lake Road is 4km of reasonable clay-surfaced road on which I could maintain an easy 60-70kmh in a Ford Focus. The driveway is 2km long and is rough. It's rocky in places and probably easier in a 4wd, but passable gently in first gear in the Focus. We wondered what we'd booked the first time, but subsequent trips became an opportunity to watch the abundant wildlife. It's about 10 minutes from Hog Bay Road to the front door.
There is a koala resident in the garden and numerous goannas and kangaroos are frequent visitors.
The location is halfway between Kingscote and Penneshaw (30 minutes either way), making this an ideal spot from which to explore Kanagaroo Island.

Great place. Remote, but easy access to the island.

We arrived at kangaroo island with the intention to see Australia wildlife, lucky for us we stayed at the flour cask bay retreat. The room is well equipped, very clean and Cody. The owner John is very friendly and knowledgeable about the surroundings. If you want to see kangaroos then this place is the only real place to view them in the wild. We saw tens of kangaroos, many birds and if you are lucky an echidna (we were not lucky 😃). All in all our stay was a wonderful experience.

Wonderful stay

We felt very comfortable and could recommend it unconditionally. We would have liked to have stayed longer. The last few kilometres of the journey are a bit bumpy. For this, you will be rewarded with seclusion, wonderful nature, a lot of tranquility and a starry sky without light soup. Our small rental car (Fiat, no SUV) has endured everything well. Highlight is the lush fauna. In the area hundreds of kangaroos swarm to greet you right at home in the morning and farewell at night. The room was top clean. Dito bath, towels and laundry. The overall functional equipment is stable. WLAN type and convenient. Bedroom fitted. The super kitchen is also equipped with a new rooftop, which would also be a great place to stay. In each case, we would like to say thank you. There are two super guest rooms on the terrace.

It was great.

At the beginning of December 2018, we spent four nights at John's house and enjoyed it very much. We found great: - The quiet and secluded location is about 10 minutes by car from the highway. However, there are all the modern amenities such as running hot water, fast Wi-Fi, a well-equipped kitchen and a beautiful garden. - The animal world of the island right in front of the door, we saw kangaroos, whales, and various eels and birds at home. - The highlight is also a koala, maybe twenty or three minutes away from the terrace.

Our Visit to Kangaroo Island

A unique 180-degree view of the blue ocean, no man far and wide, thousands of miles to the south only water, to the north, well, a few people but only in the summer months, a lot of kangaroos, snakes and sheep. Is this really paradise? Unfortunately not for me.

A suitable address for excursionists and hermits.

Friendly owners and a well appointed, comfortable room make this hide-away a great place to stay on Kangaroo Island.  The abundant wildlife make it all the more special.  You'll see many of the bird species of the island flittering through the gardens here, as well as wallabies and kangaroos. We even spotted an echidna snuffling around just outside our door.

A wonderful place to relax

Where do we start...this retreat is a complete gem, located down an unsealed road but our hire car managed it fine with no problems (Toyota Corolla). We visited on our honeymoon and we were welcomed by the owner John, who is such a lovely guy, knowledgable and helpful above and beyond. After showing us to our accommodation and giving us information on the local area, including the types of wildlife we would likely encounter and the best places to visit, he took us on a tour of the retreat, down to the beach to watch the sunset and then a spot of kangaroo watching! Just beautiful, and watching the kangaroos drinking from the water dish every night was a highlight. There is no light pollution either so if you're in to stargazing this is the place as you can see The Milky Way and so much more so clearly! 
Our room was great, spotless and such a comfortable bed, and plenty of kitchen equipment, and a gas BBQ which we used, and sat on the veranda watching the birds flitting around the bird bath in the evenings. 
Flour Cask Bay Retreat is such a fabulous place, we would most definitely return here should we be lucky enough to come back to KI! Thank you so much John!

Amazing place!

Where to begin. Thanks - Thanks to John and Karon for being the most amazing hosts you could ask for when travelling.
My partner and I visited Kangaroo Island in January and booked around end of November. We were quite fortunate to find this accommodation, as something like 80% of Kangaroo Island had been booked. How lucky we were!
You drive up a very bumpy road to wide open fields (don't be worried when you are driving up the road - you will make it!). We were given a nice run down of things to do on the island, places we could eat at and closest town(s) to visit.
The beds are extremely comfy and the self contained unit is cosy and good free WIFI for such a remote area. A nice breeze usually comes through and cools the house down on those hot days!
In the evening, we were always visited by some Kangaroos, drinking from a strategically placed water bowl by John. We were also very fortunate to see an Echidna and Koala around the property (as well as hundreds of Kangaroos).
On the last night, John so kindly showed us the most beautiful sunset and a perfect way to wrap up a holiday. Cannot recommend this place enough!

Simply Stunning 10 out of 5 - 200%

After three nights, I could have stayed there for another three months. We slept very well in a very quiet, very comfortable bed, very moist toilet towels, barbecued on the terrace at night before sunset, then walked down the street to see the kangaroos. A mother and her baby are even used to coming to the garden several times a day, right in front of the house. Very welcoming and warm hotels. A paradise at the end of the road, for lovers of an unforgiving nature.
