Wonky floors just add to the character of this little cottage. The hosts had the wood fire burning, so it was a lovely warm cabin to enter

Aptly named, it did not take long to see the resident platypus playing at the rivers edge directly out the back.

We stayed one night, cottage very clean. It had everything you need, very cosy with fire as was cool at night. Checkin was easy. The location is great right on the river, we enjoyed having a glass of wine on the deck watching the ducks. Would definitely love to come back. The cafe next door is also a real treat. 

Beautiful 

The cottage is in a very nice location, right beside the river (where you can see platypus either right there or just a short distance downstream), with a small deck on the river side.  The cottage is well equipped with a variety of benchtop cooking appliances and a BBQ  on the deck, and despite being right beside the road is quiet at night (hardly any traffic).  Adequate bathroom, comfortable beds, loungeroom with wood fire. Good location for access to Russell Falls/Mt Field, less than 10min drive, and Lake Pedder, with New Norfolk only 30km away if you need to shop.  The little village also has a berry farm, and the Possum Shed Cafe, which is wonderful, is next door to the cottage.
The cottage could really use a good spring-clean particularly to remove the cobwebs in the ceiling, and otherwise would benefit from some maintenance (fix the bulge in the driveway, trim the trees so the cottage and guests' cars don't get a beating in high wind, re-cover the chair with the torn seat).   It would also be better if the doors on the river side had insect screens.  The windows on that side do not open at all, so for fresh air the only option is to open the doors (the cottage has no air-conditioning), which is OK in day time as long as there aren't lots of insects but is not an option at night.     
In all, a pleasant spot, but while nice enough the cottage itself probably isn't to the standard you would expect for the price point, particularly as far as upkeep goes.

Nice location and cottage, could use a little work

Wonderful! Gorgeous cottge by the river! Resident Platypus who came to visit! Comfortable beds well equipped kitchen will loads of breakfast suplies. Friendly host and welcoming treats and all the little touches of luxury that made for a peaceful relaxing and beautiful weekend!

Stayed here recently and had a wonderful experience. We had been staying in a campervan for most of our holiday and decided to treat ourselves and stay in this cottage on our last night prior to catching our flight to Hobart the next day. The cottage was comfortable, spacious, with good heating, electric blankets, as well as a nice wood fireplace to keep us warm for the night. Nice kitchen for cooking, and sitting while you enjoy the river flowing right behind the cottage. After a week in the campervan, having a nice warm shower in the house was also a treat. The owner was very nice when we called him and attended to all our queries promptly. 
My only hesitation about posting this was fear that it would get so popular that it would not be available the next time I come by :)

Platypuses right outside by the river

This was a total let down. We book online direct, going by the photos on their web site. These photo's would seem to be many, many years old. Not what it looked like the day we visited. It hasn't been touched since the day it was painted. We couldn't even access the front door without problems. 
Not sure the last time someone even cleaned the place, cobwebs everywhere.
The price we were charged was WAY over the top, ridiculous actually to not even get a continental breakfast.
We stayed at other B & B for less money and got full layed on service with cooked breakfast included.
Do not expect to much at this joint.

Not at all what they advertise

As soon as I saw this cottage I knew I wanted to stay here! It's absolutely gorgeous!! We only stayed 1 night but next time we'll stay for 2. We LOVED that we saw Platypus in the river from the back deck. A very special experience!! The sound of the river is so relaxing and sitting by the fireplace was so cosy. The bedding is high quality and very comfortable and warm. I highly recommend this property.

Absolutely Gorgeous!!

Recently had a one night stay at Platypus Riverside Cottage (two couples) and enjoyed it very much.    Cooking facilities are minimal but we were prepared and managed with what was provided.  The cottage is small, cosy and comfortable.   The cottage has been kept  in a condition reflecting its heritage which adds to its charm.The beds & linen were great, we enjoyed sitting by the fire and the view from the back rooms and verandah are amazing.    After reading guests comments about sightings of platypus, we were hopeful but due to rain the day/night before the river was running very fast which made it difficult to spot them.   However, we did manage a brief sighting of one resting on the riverbank.   I would definitely recommend a stay at this cottage but don't expect a modern, high spec  property.   The cottage is right on the roadside and was a bit noisy with the logging trucks but the charm of the cottage and setting offset this.  One more thing, there are no shops at Westerway so do your shopping beforehand..

WHAT A GEM!

Ignore all past negative reviews. As the owners have stated, they have renovated the whole cottage and we can vouch for how lovely it is now.  It is a 7 minute drive to the Mount Field National Park visitor center.  The beds are comfortable, the linens are clean and the kitchen was well stocked.  The fire place was a perk as we read in the living room. We woke up in the morning with a view to the river. My boyfriend was ecstatic that he can just step outside to our backyard for some fishing. We have stayed in many airbnbs/cabins/cottages in our travels and we would not hesitate to come back.

Fantastic cabin very close to Mount Field National Park

What a wonderful place to relax. All amenities and the river backs on to the cottage so a perfect haven for relaxing and fishing. Two bedrooms, nice little lounge, kitchen/dining, well appointed bathroom and back deck perfect for bbq and relaxing. Looking forward to a return visit at some stage.
