We just spent 2 nights at HHI and I will write a very honest review here. The check in with Teresa was good. She showed us to our room and gave us some basic details. After some fiddling by husband, we managed to get the TINY  t.v. working. The bathroom was tiny featuring a shower with rickety doors that wouldn't close properly and a sink you could barely wash your face in. The entire set up of the room was terrible. Nowhere to put your luggage. The chair by the dressing table was very uncomfortable. The lighting was pretty much non existent. I realize it is an old building but it definitely could use some updates.
The breakfasts were cold and I believe were cooked ahead of time. We only ate 1/4 of the food. The one positive thing was the set up of the dining room with tables all set quite nicely with tablecloths, silverware and lovely tea cups.
Since there are no refrigerators in the rooms, I had requested one of the servers place a couple of canned beverages in their fridge for the next day when we would be returning from an excursion. She said she would and that if we were not back by 4 p.m. she would put them on ice and leave them in the common area. Upon returning from our outing and craving our cold beverages, they were nowhere to be found. The kitchen area was locked and of course no one answered the phone calls we made to guest services. 
The next morning we requested the beverages and she went to retrieve them, with no apologies for not making them accessible to us. WE left them on a desk in the hallway for just a few minuted while we went to our room to grab some things. Upon our return, they were gone! Someone just took them! The service staff didn't seem to care one iota! No help offered to us in hopefully finding our drinks. Just so uncaring and "ohh well, too bad".
The entire service staff left a lot to be desired. One service person named Stacey was exremely rude to us (and to everyone). She just seemed to be so inconvenienced by the entire procedure. I would highly recommend if she can not be pleasant to guests, she should seek more suitable employment. I have never encountered such unpleasantness in the hospitality industry ever!
I would not stay at this establishment again and I urge anyone considering it to look elsewhere.

Unpleasant and uncomfortable

Beautiful Victorian house. Walking distance to downtown, Fort Anne, Royal Gardens, etc. We were able to upgrade our room upon arrival. Very quiet. Off street parking. Breakfast is good, not great. Nice big garden in back.

Good place to stay for all downtown activities

We stayed two nights participating in a bike tour (which BTW is phenomenal—E-bike recommended).
Hillsdale has the feel of a country inn in the typical Nova Scotia Victoria architectural style, somewhat larger than the typical B &B.
It has charm and feel/smell of a house built in the early 1900s, somewhat dilapidated, with a very large back yard containing beautiful trees and flowers (even a magnolia!), unmanicured. 
The rooms were small but adequate, clean and well supplied, with window AC and musically creaking hardwood floors. Nice location for touring, the beautiful Royal Annapolis Gardens two doors down.

Victorian charm

Have stayed off and on over the years, with different owners. Latest stay was disappointing. It appears not looked after, flower planters at front entrance had dead flower or weeds, there was a store flyer pack sitting on the front veranda the two nights we were there, grass uncut. Room was fine, though wifi was very spotty, had to keep changing server. Breakfast looked like it was already prepared, and came out cold one day and barely warm the next. Options to drink were tea, coffee or water, no juice.  Ext time will probably try another B&B in Annapolis Royal.

Seems to a slipped some

Situated on a busy yet scenic and historically significant main road, Hillsdale House, built in 1868, is a Victorian gem of an inn, suggesting more than a hint of quiet elegance in the delightful small town of Annapolis Royal.

Step inside the main entrance of Hillsdale House and the visitor is instantly taken back to the 19th century.  Look around, stroll its various and many characteristic rooms, both upstairs and down, and feel immersed in a time long gone.  There is a turn-of-the-century guest book in the inn’s front lobby, a beautiful Victrola in another room, and, more up-to-date, a beverage area that provides round-the-clock water and coffee for guests of Hillsdale.  This is an especially welcome touch, especially after a day of touring tour-worthy Annapolis Royal.

We enjoyed two nights in room four, located on the second floor of the inn.  The room’s decor was in keeping with the rest of the inn, with heavy drapes and dark wood, yet it included many of the modern amenities one comes to expect, such as air conditioning and a comfortable king-size mattress.  There was a small tabletop TV as well, and while some may quibble about its size, one shouldn’t come to Annapolis Royal with TV in mind when there’s so much culture on offer.  In contrast to our room, the bathroom was small and windowless, though it was well-lit.  Also included is a telephone booth-size shower that came with rather rickety doors.  The sink, not surprisingly, was small and, given the layout of the bathroom, was placed in a narrow area next to the shower.  On the plus side, the towels in the bathroom were plentiful and of high quality.  

Breakfast at Hillsdale House represents a refreshing and tasty change of pace.  Upon entering the attractive breakfast room, the visitor is immediately greeted with a treat, such as a parfait or bowl of strawberries.  There is no buffet breakfast at Hillsdale, and that’s a good thing as the visitor is soon provided with a delicious cooked breakfast, such as egg bites and sausage as well as good quality coffee served in lovely china.  The management at Hillsdale, moreover, is to be commended for its progressive avoidance of plastic at breakfast.  Unlike most accommodations, the breakfast table at Hillsdale is free of plastic creamers and single servings of jam, syrup, and the like.  Well done, Hillsdale!  Like the inn itself, breakfast at Hillsdale comes with more than a hint of Old World elegance.

Providing friendly, professional service, in a setting that is quiet and rich in Old World appeal, Hillsdale House Inn is strongly recommended when traveling to the charming town of Annapolis Royal.

Quiet Elegance in Annapolis Royal

We really enjoyed our stay.  The rooms are decorated with old antique furniture, and were really clean.  Breakfast was really nice with a fruit/yogurt starter followed by a hot breakfast.  Central to the markets and historical sites.

Lovely old Annapolis Royal inn

The house is spacious with interesting architecture and additions. The grounds are also large with beautiful plantings. Several lounges and a large sun porch for guests in addition to the large, sunny dining room. Breakfast was large but probably all prepared early. We came in the middle of the breakfast hours and our food was a bit dried out. Pleasant, sunny room with good A/C.

Beautiful 1859 Mansion

The Hillsdale House Inn is just a few blocks from the Annapolis Royal Historic Gardens, Harborwalk and Farmers Market (Saturday & Wednesday AM). The B&B has been an Inn since built in the 19th century. The living areas accessible to guests are beautiful. It has a new owner since March 2022, the second in 4 years. Outside work is being done now, paused on the weekend. Perhaps the guest rooms will be upgraded also, so keep your eyes on this lovely Inn. We were in Room 3. It is spacious (twin beds). It was clean, but the air smelled musty from the old air conditioning unit which was too noisy & unhealthy to use. The old windows had storm windows over the screens so we were unable to open them for cross ventilation. The small bathroom was just adequate with its difficult to use quaint tub/shower & sink unit that is ready to be replaced. The summer staff are sincere and charming. The room was clean. We enjoyed our full, hot breakfast served in the pretty dining room or outside. Our table outside was set with table linens & our breakfast accommodated our vegetarian request. This Inn was once a grand spot. Under the new ownership, hopefully it will be again.

Great Location, Breakfast & Staff. Guest Rooms Need Upgrades.

We loved our two days here. The location is perfect for walking to everything in Annapolis Royal. The site is a beautiful period showcase, clean and quiet. The attentive owner, Theresa, is helpful with suggestions and attentive to special needs. Breakfast was spectacular; we did not need to eat again until dinner!

Beautiful place, personal service

We stayed in the King Suite on the second floor in early October. The Inn is beautiful (furniture and decorations were very charming) and located only a short walk from the main area of Annapolis Royal. The owner was friendly and very helpful, but unfortunately, her serving staff need some improvement. They spent too much time chatting in the kitchen- instead of serving breakfast. Making guests (not us) wait more than 5 minutes to be greeted in the dining room was unfortunate. We seemed like a distraction.

I was going to give this place a 3 /5, but the owner was so nice and helpful, she earns the 4.
