Lake Louise

Wife and I Stayed here recently for a family get together in Lake Louise. Unfortunately additional family members  couldn't stay here because this establishment discriminates against dog owners. To be honest, it turned out for the best as they stayed at the Chateau Lake Louise instead which is a far superior property (obviously) and does not practice discrimination. Besides their discriminatory policies, we also found the place to be more than a little run down and tired looking.  More like a motel than the "Spa and resort that they advertise themselves as. Would not stay here again. 

Discriminatory, run down and overpriced. 

We had two nights’ stay in a suite at the Post Hotel for my birthday treat and the hotel was wonderful - snug and log-cabbiny with magical Christmas decorations. However, we unfortunately found the food to be very overpriced and pretentious, and we actually left hungry, which really spoiled an otherwise lovely experience. If you’re fortunate to have an unlimited budget and love fine wines and nouvelle cuisine then perhaps you’d disagree, but we were underwhelmed by the food. For breakfast at $24 pp, I had one slice of avocado toast and Mike had 3 smallish, plain blueberry pancakes. Tasty, but not filling when you don’t eat lunch. We could have added the $14 “buffet” which was a small continental spread. After a day of hiking in the cold and swimming lengths in the lovely pool we were really looking forward to dinner, but once seated we discovered that there we were expected to pay $145 per person for a 4 course dinner. I find it very hard to justify spending that amount of money on one dinner (without drinks) when so many people are struggling to make ends meet. So, I very embarrassedly asked to see a menu with prices which we were reluctantly given. We shared a salad (small with bitter Brussels sprout leaves) and had the duck entrees (slices of rare breast with a beet and a little cabbage) and the bill still came to well over $200 with a drink each. The booking was also weird - we could only get a 5:45pm slot and the place was almost empty. The rest of the experience was excellent - our leaky Jacuzzi tub was fixed immediately and our suite had a bathroom each and a wood fire. We’d did wish that we’d asked for a suite at the back as our room overlooked the parking lot and the trains went by all night, but that would have been a bigger issue in summer. If I was in charge of the hotel, I’d just change the dining experience - maybe serve the 4 course meal, but also have an a la carte menu with lovely, hearty, warming foods like stews and soups. Also, less people are drinking alcohol these days, so I’d also add more non-alcoholic, creative drink options. Essentially it’s a lovely, old-fashioned, charming log-cabin hotel and it should stick with lovely old-fashioned, delicious, hearty, winter food - then it could be perfect!

Magical hotel with overpriced food

Let me start by saying I had three different significant issues during my 2-night, $2500 or so stay at Post Hotel.  AND when I checked out, I presented these issues and asked management to call.  5 days have passed and no call.  It’s one thing to ignore a guest in the course of their stay  but inexcusable to not respond to complaints lodged in a civil manner.

Lake Louise a bucket list destination for me, excited to stay at Post Hotel. Shuttle bus from Banff (and Fairmont -  service was exceptional) directly to hotel for 2- night stay that would include premier room, using the Post Hotel shuttle to and from Moraine Lake, 90 minute massage in Spa, dinner and breakfast in The Dining Room as well as dinner at The Outpost. Departure would be back to Banff from Chateau Lake Louise after hiking and tea.

Upon arrival, I asked for assistance to arrange transport from Post Hotel to Chateau Lake Louise. Seemed like a reasonable request plus I had been advised prior to arrival there were options. The woman checking me in said they could not help nor was there any taxi.  She suggested walking a few blocks to where a town bus could take me close to the Chateau and I could walk further.  I am a 71 year old woman,  solo with luggage and the weather was rain/snow mix.  She said the hotel shuttle van would not help me.  I was stunned.  The next morning I thought to give it a try and  another person at the desk (who had been advised of my situation) gave me the number for a taxi/tour service to call who might help me. No offer of assistance, even from the Lake Moraine shuttle the Post ran to the bus stop which was on the way - and Lake Moraine which was very close to Lake Louise.  The service I contacted might be able to help me but I needed to call that next morning and they would try to fit me into THEIR shuttle schedule. This ended up happening but I didn’t know until an hour before departure.  And no one at the hotel seemed a bit concerned or willing to help me.  I would have been content with the 2 minute shuttle to town or eternally grateful for the 10 minutes up to the Lake by the Post Hotel shuttle.  

After Lake Moraine the next morning, I was looking forward to a 90 minute massage.  It ended up being anything but relaxing.  I nicely asked the therapist at least 5 times to increase the pressure to no avail.  She did tell me of a recent client who kept directing her to do things - who knows if that person was frustrated like me.  What took it over the top was all of the personal information the therapist told me - serious stuff starting with her PSTD struggles and just one month on the job.  

The swim prior to the massage was enjoyable so I chalked the massage up to bad luck and a waste of money. 

The Dining Room is well-regarded so this would be a nice way to end the day.  Unfortunately, as a single woman sitting at a table between tables of couples, I was invisible to my waiter.  Didn’t get to order a glass of wine with dinner,didnt get the asking how the things were between courses, didnt get banter he engaged with the couples on either side of me; I waited so long for the check I got up and told the woman who seats guests to settle the bill and tip and charge to my room.  

There were some pleasantries during my stay.  The rooms were cozy and clean.  I enjoyed having a fireplace, the driver who shuttled us to and from Lake Moraine was gracious and welcoming.  The Outpost was easy and convenient for a casual meal.  But as I said at the onset, 3 significant issues and management failed to address or even give lip service to.  I travel solo at my age successfully by staying at top-drawer properties.  This one failed me at every turn.

Solo Female Ghosted during 2-night Stay at Post Hotel 

The Lake Louise area is very expensive. That said, The Post Hotel & Spa seemed like a pretty reasonable place for the under $600/night that we paid. It is a classic hotel, situated right in lake Louise Village, close to a nice bakery coffee shop where you can get breakfast or lunch (short walk from hotel).  Across the street, you can catch a private shuttle to lake Louise or Moraine Lake. There are also public shuttles that can be booked at the nearby visitors center. So it is very convenient.  Our room was comfortable and well equipped except it lacked a coffee maker.  Coffee or tea were usually available in the reception area, however. The woman at the desk was exceptionally friendly and helpful- I don't recall her name but she was from the Netherlands, I believe.  The restaurant, while expensive, is wonderful. All in all, a great choice for visiting Lake Louise and Moraine Lake- and less expensive than the Fairmont or Lake Moraine Lodge.

A great base to hike the surrounding lakes.
Staff friendly and efficient, food and drinks really good, amazing jacuzzi bath to soothe aching bones in room, comfortable bed only minus would be that there were no tea/coffee facilities in room, but were provided at end of corridor.

Comfortable

We stayed in a 2 bedroom suite by the rushing river for 3 nights. It was warm and they gave us 2 fans which were adequate to keep the rooms cool. The sound of the water outside was therapeutic, the restaurant excellent. We initially wanted to stay at the Fairmont Lake Louise but they did not have rooms on one of the nights. We are now glad we stayed at the Post Hotel because it has way more character and iis nowhere as touristy. The hotel is part of Relais and Chateaux.

Great hotel by rushing river

We had booked a 3 night stop which sadly we had to curtail to 2 nights, this was our loss.
The hotel is really welcoming with nice , lounge and pool area. 
Our room was the basic room but was certainly not basic in terms of comfort, cleanliness or bathroom facilities.
We ate at both the bar and fine dining restaurant. The bar meal could have been warmer but the taste was fine.
The fine dining restaurant was excellent as were all the staff at the hotel.
The only observation I would make is that the presentation of the desert ,or pudding ,as we British call it, didn’t match the presentation of the other courses. It tasted great but needs a little bit of refinement to match the rest of the meal.
Whilst the Chateau may have the views the Post in my opinion is better for food, comfort, service and relaxation.

A relaxing place to stay

There are some great things about the hotel and others that mean that I’m in no great need to return; there are just too many little niggles. 

The L’Occitane products in our bathroom were superb, and there was a huge range of bathroom amenities, which were always refreshed. However, the room and the bathroom were quite small … and all rather old-fashioned. Maybe it’s just a style thing; but it didn’t appeal to me. It screamed 1990s condo-style rather than five star luxury. 

Lift passes are available at reception, and seem to be cheaper than buying them up at the ski centre in Lake Louise. There is a free shuttle service to the skiing, which was very efficient, and Constantine and the others were kind and friendly. 

The pool area is great, and we made good use of the warm pool and the hot tub on a daily basis. The whole area was spotlessly clean and there was always an excellent supply of fresh towels available. 

We never ventured into the spa. We would have had massages but were told that there were no slots available when I tried to book ten days before our arrival. The only slots they had were around lunchtime. I can only surmise that with the hotel being so quiet, the staff were on a break. For a hotel that calls itself The Post Hotel & Spa it was all a bit ironic. 

We used the lounge bar once. The fire was nice but the service was hopeless. I had to dig someone out of the dining room to come and help us, and when the real barman did eventually appear it was only briefly. This meant that there was a long wait in order to find someone to make out the bill. 

The restaurant was also having its problems. Just before arriving, we made dinner reservations on days 1 and 4 of our stay. We were told that there were only two servings and we had to come at 6:30 or 8:15 on both nights – there was no choice in the matter and ‘sadly’ they could not accommodate us at 7:30. So, on day 1 we had dinner in an empty restaurant at 6:30. The food was good and the wine list exceptional. One of our party needed a hospital visit on day 4, and so after skiing, I went to the restaurant and asked to move our dinner booking until later. I was expecting to have to eat at 8:15 … but no, the charming host told me that 7:30 pm was fine. So that’s when we ate. Bizarre. 

In summary, there were just too many small annoyances during our stay. And that, in the end, kills the five star feeling of a place.

Frustrating

Staff were very friendly and well trained service forward … something that has been lost in the USA unless you are staying in a 5 star resort. The food was incredible at every meal…breakfast, tea, dinner.
The reason I did not give a 5 on this review had more to do with accommodation. We had a lovely working fireplace in our room that was cleaned daily, a lovely deck to the outdoors. The hotel overall needs renovation. A little tired decor. We really enjoyed the pool and spa area. Would definitely return… the staff were so pleasant and accommodating and seemed to actually enjoy serving. How refreshing…

Impeccable Service… Outstanding food for this second visit…

We stayed here for 2 nights during our visit to Lake Louise last week. To be honest - when we walked into the hotel, we realized that this was not the sort of modern hotel that we are used to staying in. However what the hotel lacks in modern decor , it more than makes up in it's impeccable service and charm. 

We loved how the staff remembers what we told them the day before and where we went. The staff were extremely approachable and always keen to help.

We dined in at the Dining room on one of the evenings- and the dinner service was one of the best I've experienced in our travels. We tried bar food at the Outpost the following night and the food was great too. 

We stayed at the k side suites. While the rooms can look dated , they were very comfortable. It's the little things like fresh wood near the fireplace, a beautiful view from the room, the staff that ensures that the rooms are perfectly made up at the end of the day that elevated the experience to another level.

To be honest , I didn't really understand why this hotel got the high scores during our first night here. But by the time we checked out - we ended up looking back and agreeing that we loved our stay at the post
