Fontana Luxor Hostel

Central location 5 minutes walk from the railway station and 15 minutes walk from the temple of Luxor. Not optimal cleanliness. Although the owner was always available, I didn't like it because I asked him if he would kindly procure me a ticket for the Luxor - Hurghada bus that cost 115 Egyptian lire (as printed on the ticket). But he asked me for 260 Egyptian lire (more than twice, 9€ more!) saying that it was high season and the prices were higher (bullish) and saying that he had taken it not to the agency because the seats were finished (another lie because the bus was half empty). I also asked for confirmation to a passenger and everyone told me that they had paid 115 Egyptian lire.

Central position

The rooms was clean, the shower was hot and the people behind the desk helpful. There was good wifi in the reception and also the possibility to order pizza to your room from a local Italian! The young lad behind the desk was a massive credit to the place, made me laugh and feel so welcome! 

I loved this place!

It's a quiet, clean, affordable and safe place in the centre of the city of Luxor, and I have to make a note of it to the very willing and courteous owners, especially my son and their small, well-prepared travel agency.

Hotel in Luxor

I have travelled a lot and found a clean hotel, hot water! cheap with a warm welcome from Magdi and his family, well located in the center of Luxor, just choose his mattress....!!!!my room was located next to the garden...so calmly what is pleasant to sleep in.Let's not forget that we come from the rich country France and that currently there are no more tourists...even if the prices are higher than other hotels, I was happy to dialogue education, he is also a teacher, life on Egypt, culture. I would have just wished to eat Egyptian and not American! for me it is also a country to adapt to their cooking! Chantal Mathieu....

Tolerance in differences!

We stayed there for 3 nights, just when redecorating was going on, but did not affect our stay at all. We had spacious and very clean room with big bathroom. Owner pays attention to detail (towels/stand for drying clothes in the room, welcome drinks upon arrival, perfect signal for wifi) and looks after the place. He is very helpful and speaks excellent english, arranged great excursion for us to the monuments. Breakfast was simple but tasty (omelette,bread,jam,cheese and hot drink). Staff would boil water for us when we fancied coffee. Highly recommend for any travellers.

Nice place

1. The owner will charge you what ever he thinks he can get away with.  No prices are displayed, and he is likely to try and ask where you stayed previously to get an idea of what he can charge you.  You would be crazy to accept any of his tours or offers - they are awfully overpriced.

2. My room was absolutely grimy.  The pillows were awful.  The bed was sunken and incredibly uncomfortable.  Struggled to sleep due to the noise and light from the street outside.  

3. Breakfast was a few pieces of stale bread with jam.  

4. The bathroom certainly doesn't look like the one in the picture.  It was however fairly clean, albeit could have done with a shower curtain.

Untrustworthy Owner, Noisy Dirty Rooms,

I'm genuinely shocked to see so many negative reviews. We found the Fontana a solid value with a super family running the place. 

Checked in almost at sunrise and the owner didn't fuss when we asked for four nights starting that day, so we got the room 6 hours early. Breakfast was ample for hot Egypt days when you need energy and not a bloated stomach. The Wi-Fi was the best we've had in the middle east (yes, I know Egypt is Africa, but I'm culturally grouping here), if a little inconsistent. 

Additionally, the clientele here is great. We met other long term travelers, travel writers, and a dude who'd been to Egypt 60 times in 30 years! So much knowledge hanging out in the dining room.

Now all of that said, avoid the tours like the plague. While I don't hold the owner at fault for making a few extra bucks selling such things, our tour we booked through them almost ruined our trip to Luxor. Another fellow joined us who'd payed 50% less than we did after factoring tickets and the guide was just a straight up jerk. I probably wouldn't have mentioned it, assuming it was a one off problem, but per other reviewers, it seems to be a systemic issue. Just stay away from them.

Also, wife says -.5 for really hard pillows.

Anyhow, if you're on a tight budget or just like a super deal, you'd do well to stay here. Just firmly say no to the 'information' you will be offered at check-in.

P.s. We agreed to a price on arrival and paid cash up front. It was more than fair, included breakfast, and were not hassled at all regarding money. 

Solid Value - If you avoid the tours.

A good location with reasonable facilities and space, however avoid this hotel for a few reasons, the main one is that you CANNOT trust the owner or his son for a second, after talking and bartering about the agreed rate, it spiked up as he says the dorm rooms with external bathrooms were occupied then also added to the bill a "great" breakfast is included for a slight increase in price, however both were blatant lies, the occupancy it was not enough for those rooms to be booked out and breakfast was very poor quality. Furthermore there is a constant and pushy hard sell of more overpriced tours, bus tickets etc..seriously every five minutes you are pressured to buy something, even after you have declined it before.
The beds are in poor condition and one of the ones I tried was sunken halfway through the night. 
Really they are silver tongued salesmen, without any reservation about ripping you off while making it seem like they are your best friend and they are saving you from the devil agents and taxi drivers outside, alas you are already staying with the very type of people they are trying to warn you about. Please heed the warning and avoid the place.

A untrustworthy hotel !!!

An economical hostel with shower and air conditioning is a great solution, when on +50, it's in the heart of Luxor, you can walk to many attractions.

It's a good place to stay.

Not terrible room, lots of ants. Wi-Fi available but not in the rooms. Air co and fan in the room. The propro is a very greedy and cunning Muslim, he tries to cheat to get more money... his services are really disappointing for the price! Excursions very expensive and cheating like everywhere in Egypt... there's a way to negotiate!
