During our tour with friends through the Baltic states we stayed for one night at the Palmse Manor guesthouse. It was the only hotel of our tour that was really diappointing. This was supposed to be a 3 star hotel (local category), it did definitely not live up to that standard:
There were no elevators, we had to carry our luggage up two floors. The room had no safe. The water in the bathroom had a smell of hydogen sulfide (especially noticeable when brushing your teeth). The bar was closed, we were offered a table in the (otherwise empty) restaurant instead. Worst of all was the attitude of the personnel, very unfriendly both at check-in and check-out (different persons).
The only reason for rating at 2 instead of 1: The surroundings of the guesthouse are very nice.

We didn't feel welcome

Palmse Manor is still on my mind.  I love the rich historical architecture, artifacts and cultural vibe of this manor house.  The Estonians know how to give a complete picture of what it would be like to live in a manor home.  Each room is beautifully restored and fully furnished from days gone by.  The artifacts in the kitchen were fascinating, as was the music box in the parlor.  There is a nice walking path about the lake, rides in a horse drawn carriage (large and mini), plus wine tasting and food sampling.  My teenager was fascinated.  What a magical place to visit!

A Highlight in the Estonian Countryside

Palmse is considered to be the most beautiful of all the old inns in Estonia, which we find credible after two nights there. The guesthouse in an adjoining building makes the experience in the extensive estate perfect. You live there stylishly, quietly and simply. We had booked a slightly more expensive junior suite and didn't regret it, because it was really spacious. The house was very sparsely occupied in the second half of August. Apart from the check-in staff (presumably the house) we didn't see any staff in the two days, which was a shame.

And we've seen history here. A very nice ambience and a really worthwhile visit to the small but very interesting museum. A very historic place, specifically on the subject of German-Baltic history.

A touch of Weimar

My husband and I had a suite on the first floor of the guest house.  Very interesting lay out - two rooms, large bedroom with a sitting area with a table.  There is a separate shower room from the toilet.  That is nice when there are two people staying there.  The bathroom floors were heated.  Very nice!  

The bed was very comfortable with 2 pillows for each person and king sized.  They also supplied hair conditioner - so if you have long hair it's useful.

The grounds were beautiful.  There are hiking trails, a distillery (with tasting room), a wine cellar (with tasting), the manor house, a garden, a pub and gardens. There is also a beautiful gazebo overlooking a lake.  

Breakfast in the pub was good.  Good variety, eggs, ham, breads, tea, coffee and juices.

Beautiful location

Big room with no charm, proper bathroom. To our surprise, the bed was not made for our second night, the towels unchanged, the trash cans unemptied. Our room in the RDC, windows overlooking the park with no curtains, obligation to close the blinds for a little privacy. Fortunately the setting is very nice, in the middle of the mansion park. Very nice lunch in the park tea room by the pond.

But even though visiting hours are over, the gardens are open and accessible. A really nice place with ponds, bridges, a beautiful restaurant, 18th century greenhouses and a nice fruit garden.

Beautiful castle

Manor, where part of the history of Estonia took place. Place and symbol of the power of the Baltic German barons allied with the Russian emperors, the Von der Pahlen family, it was confiscated after the War of Independence. Today a well-renovated museum, it is full of buildings with various purposes (orangery for trees and flowers of the Tropics, orchard, distillery, sauna, lake, park, where St. John's Night is celebrated in particular)

journey through history

I went to a seminary. Nice house. Collective rooms with rustic installation. Collective toilets. On the first floor the rooms are under the roof: no windows on the surroundings, only unreachable veluxes because too high. It's a little lost in the middle of nowhere. Next to it in the same park, a typical hostel with a rustic and historical setting, good local cuisine that we assume.

Nice setting for nature lovers

We stayed not in the hotel, but in three-bed rooms of the cheaper guest house with a bathroom in the hallway. The accommodation was extremely clean and quiet, the three comfortable and beautiful beds stood apart at a pleasant distance, since we were alone we had the spacious, separate two showers for ourselves. The dinner at the tavern was especially loving and rich and really tasty for us, the breakfast opulent, the service pleasing. We would have liked to have stayed far too long, especially since we could not properly explore the beautiful park due to lack of time.
