Albergo Alex this is of course a very modest hotel in our room of four was just a sink and a bidet and they were in the only room where there were 4 beds and an old cipher. The shower and the toilet were the only ones in the three rooms. Among the advantages of the hotel was a very kindly hostess of the 80s who every morning would cover the breakfast tables and serve the finest coffee with the cruisers. Five meters across the road from the Consum Store. Ten minutes from the train station of Venice from which we would later go to Bologna. Well, it was just interesting to spend time really in an old Venetian house which has practically not changed since the time of construction.

A modest hotel

It is a cheap hotel, in Venice where cheap hotels are very scarce. For me, it was well located, but be aware that it is about 10 minutes walk from just about anywhere other than the Frari, which is just over a narrow canal. In particular, it is about 10 minutes to the nearest vaporetto stop, but it is only a bit over 10 minutes to the bus station at Piazzale Roma and only a little further to the railway station.
There is a supermarket opposite and two restaurants but I did not fancy either of them and the nearest other trattorie are [wait for it] about 10 minutes walk. 
I had a lovely big room with views out and a private bathroom.
The people are friendly and helpful and I would stay there again. 
But I can't rate it more favourably because it was seriously in need of maintenance. A tiled floor with cracked tiles, windows which do not fit exactly (and it was March, quite cold at night and the heating went off at night and was not enough to warm the room before I got up). In the bathroom, the shower fitting would not let me place the shower head above my head, and the shower did not have enough hot water.

cheap hotel, friendly owners, in need of maintenance

Very angry, as we had to leave this hotel early, the room was so bad, so dirty and so uncomfortable that we had to find another place.

It made many problems for our holiday, we had to find somewhere quick, because we just could not spend another night there. Mattress so bad we could not sleep.

If you want a cheap hotel, you must know you will really have not clean room, floor so dirty and mattress so old.

For a couple we had two mattresses side by side one of which was higher and the other was out of use no hot water at 3 pm faulty electrical outlets washed and repaired with scotch breakfast is fine

What to Avoid

Set in the heart of venice , Store just across , lovely restaurant very close by . Price was fine , room was tidy , Bed well I suffer from bad back and the Bed was brilliant , Very warm welcome , Breakfast was enough , Not cooked but hey ho you get what you pay for , Would I go back YES no problem one bit . Shower could do with a bit of paint and tidying up , But other than that , It was enjoyable .

Not Bad at All

I stayed at this hotel and loved it! I was fairly apprehensive beforehand, due to it being considerably cheaper than the others and coveting a one star rating, but for anyone on a budget, the location is impossible to beat, its so close to everything!
The rooms are very basic, but suited us perfectly, as we were out all day/night sightseeing, eating and drinking and only came back to the room to rest, sleep, shower etc. The breakfast is a continental one but totally adequate and kept us full til lunch time. 
The central location of the hotel, meant that we didnt have to do too much walking, for my older parents, and the helpful service we received from the local family that run Hotel Alex was fantastic. They gave us directions, daily ideas for stuff to go and see and tips for local restuarants, The lady that runs it is so lovely and friendly and literally couldn't do enough for us. 
There are quite a few negative reviews for Hotel Alex on here, but for those on a budget, I'd totally recommend it. 

A cheap hotel, in a great location!

We stayed three nights in the middle of September 2016. What a welcome! We were treated like kings. The owner is adorable, she speaks Italian (obviously), French and English. She makes breakfast in the morning and what a treat! Our room was spacious and clean. We had a very good stay and we will return without hesitation!

Perfect for a weekend.

We were just shocked at the filthy, miserable, grime of this dump. 
Half things in room broken, mattresses smelly and broken, pillow disgusting, floor filthy, toilet door broken, moldy shower.
Sure, you'll save a little money, but you'll sleep in a filthy old bed and it wont' be nice. For just a little more money you can stay in a nice place and enjoy your stay.
Like many others here we made polite comments to reception, they became angry and confused, as if we were the problem! No apologies, nothing. 
If you like staying in dirty, if you enjoy smelly old mattresses and filthy floors - then this is the place for you - if not - take my advice friend and go elsewhere!

Dirty, smelly, broken down dump - go elsewhere

We came to Venice for 2 days and so one night and we booked at the last minute in this small hotel located in the very heart of Venice. Balance: very hospitable lady, very good location and very nice breakfast. The rooms are correct (although some are really nicer than others) but don't expect to stay in a palace either! Our common bathroom didn't bother us more than that even though there are certainly some moldings on the ceiling. In addition the neighborhood is really nice with a very good restaurant called the Buffo Taverna (at 100/200 meters) and the Café de Frari which serves excellent mojitos even closer to the hotel 😁 I recommend staying for short stays

It's a good hotel.

We arrived at 11:57 p.m. when the hotel stopped giving us keys at midnight, but we were greeted with a smile, and even overrated! Thank you Alex;) Perfect for a little night in Venice:)
