この”旅館”は車が多いハイウェイに立っています。寝られないです。うるさい。作並温泉は最後の１５年で一番気持ち悪い経験でした。
This place is located near big busy road, trucks, cars, passing just not far from your room. needless to say I checked out next morning, mistake. But in Sakunami onsen most ryokans are near the road. Worst onsen experience in the last 15 years.

We visited Sendai in the middle of winter and had booked this hotel blindly on the internet. Having serious doubts about how we could get to the hotel from the train station we asked for help with the hotel manager Mr Ito. He was too kind and obliged to pick us up from Sakunami train station with a mini bus even though it was very late at night. Got to our room and we had the most pleasant surprise. It was spacious, clean and mattresses neatly laid out on the tatami floor. It was already warm and cosy when we got inside the room. Very well thought of when it was minus degrees outside. 
Man and woman had their own spa area. Each had both indoor and outdoor spa pools and shower space. They were clean, comfortable and well equipped. 
We stayed there for 3 nights and Mr Ito kindly drove us to and from the station every day with a simple phone call, free of charge. I have never had such good service from any hotel in my life. 
If we ever visit Sendai again, we will definitely stay in this lovely place.

Love this little gem

We stayed for two nights at this wonderful ryokan that was once an elementary school. The classrooms upstairs were converted into tatami rooms and guests share a common bathroom area with stalls separated for men and women.  Sharing a bathroom space is fairly common in ryokans and minshukus. Each room had a balcony overlooking the entrance which was graced by the lush mountains. 

The principal’s office on the first floor is the onsen and you have a choice of an outdoor tub. The onsen is functional with no view. 

The owner, Watanabe san, speaks English and is also the chef.  He prepared amazing meals using locally sourced produce. Each dish was exquisite with subtle flavors and beautifully presented. We were fortunate to have the first crop of their rice harvest and it was incredibly delicious. You can order local sake with dinner for an additional cost. 
The breakfast was also superb!  They have free coffee in the mornings and a hot water pot for tea in the room.  One of the assistants, Minami san, was a real gem. She was very sweet and helpful. 

The ryokan is within walking distance to the stunning rice fields, a jinja, and the suspension bridge. Our stay was very calming and the changing of the leaves as well as the mist hovering the mountains created a magical experience. 

Calm and relaxing

This is a hotspring ryokan. The building and room are not updated but a small team of employees try their best to keep the place cozy and affordable price. The food is 'kyodo ryouri' which are local production and the chef does exceptionally good quality cooking. Above all if you are a fussy onsen goers, you need to stay here. Their onsen water qality is exellent. It is a small bath but if you are after 'kakenagashi'(non-circulated water'  which is not easy to find,  but this affordable little place has it! When I found this secret place not far from Yamadera I was so excited. It takes only 20 min or so from Yamadera staion to Sakunami staion. It is much closer than going to Tendo onsen but when you scan on Trip advisor with Yamadera, Sakunami Onsen area do not come up because of different region they belong to. FYI Yamadera is in Yamagata. Sakunami Onsen is closer than Tendo but unfortunately it belong to Miyagi prefecture, people tend to miss it. Katakuri's people do not appear to speak English but if you try with slowly and clearly spoken English, I hope they will understand you. If you ring them they will come and pick you up at JR Sakunami staion. I hope you will enjoy the view on JR Senzan line on the way to Yamadera as well as Sakunami staions. I strongly recommend you if you have excursion to Yamadera!
