We had a wonderful week at this family run ski lodge. The food was great home cooked fusion of western and Japanese dishes. It was always tasty and plentiful. The staff were friendly and always very helpful. The location is good with a short walk to the slopes. Our room was clean and comfortable. This lodge is very good value for money and worthy of a high recommendation. We hope to return.

The accommodation offers a unique position in a unique lovely location. Moreover the staff and the environment is very familiar. Finally the location of Zao Onsen offers the possibility of fun all seasons

Accessible quality

Some of the people I met at Mt Zao asked me not to recommend this place - as they like it the way it is - nice and quiet, with very few westerners. But I can't keep that promise! I loved this ski mountain and in particular Lodge Scole! The service is second to none, in particular the day to day Japanese staff and the seasonal workers Bryan and Charlie. They truly bent over backwards to make our stay a memorable one - so a big thanks (particularly from the kids for their nightly apple sherberts desserts!) The food is absolutely exceptional at Lodge Scole, cooked morning and night by the 70yo part owner 'Madame' (she is quite amazing) - delicious Japanese food! It was the highlight of our 10 day trip to Japan. We were made to feel at home as soon as we stepped through the door, the kids loved it - we have an 8yo and 11yo, the mountain is a 5min walk away and perfect for the kids to learn on and Mum'nDad get some fantastic powder runs (thank you Bryan for taking us on some your powder tours - they deserve another review!). I cannot fault this place, the onsen hot bath's are so relaxing and we looked forward to that at the end of every big ski day - which was every day! Nights were spent playing cards & drinking Madame's mulled red wine with other guests by an open fire. We had a excellent package including breakfast/ dinner and lift tickets - the ski rental at the base of the lifts is excellent value aswell (they even let you keep your boots/ skis their overnight so you don't have to carry back to the lodge). The town is 5mins walk away with all the facilities one needs including massage and outdoor onsen which is a must visit - ask the staff for directions as difficult to find in the labyrinth streets). The rooms at the lodge are comfortable with everything you need (some rooms have ensuite sink/ shower), though toilets are shared but very clean (with lovely warm toilet seat!), but to be honest we barely spent much time in the room! We cannot thank Mao and Madame and their staff enough for making our stay so enjoyable! We hope to be back soon! To be honest it does not get much better then Lodge Scole!

I promised not to tell anyone about this place!

I stayed a night here while visiting the mountains. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. There were English speaking staff, who were really fun to speak with.
The hotel has a very homely feel to it.

Fun and friendly hotel

We were moved to this hotel after the centrally located hotel we were in was overbooked. We were given a b room although charged for an a room. The room was small, smelly and had nowhere to put clothes. The bed was lumpy and the bedspread dirty. The shared bath was small and could only be used for limited hours although the shower area could be used whenever. Communal toilets were at the end of the corridor and were clean. The hotel is located away from the centre and a good walk in the cold to restaurants. It seems that because the owners spoke English that was all they had to do to make guests happy. The hotel cost was only a little less than the one we had been in but the difference in quality and location like chalk and cheese.

The atmosphere is pleasant, the food is good, not far from the slopes, the price is very good and the budget is very reasonable, and since the host is an excellent skier, the organization is suitable for anyone who wants to enjoy their skiing holiday.
