Swellendam

The host, Nickie, was hospitable, warm and welcoming. The self-contained cottage we stayed in was neat and authentically period furnished. There was only one bedroom. Our first invasion of privacy occurred in the evening when a man walked into the cottage unannounced while my wife was partially dressed and asked we move our vehicle. Great was our surprise when the same man walked in again the next morning. I confronted him and asked him to leave just to be told that he was coming for breakfast. This implies that the area outside our bedroom was a common area. We were not informed of this and would have declined our booking had we known that we were not private. This spoilt what could have been a pleasant stay. Invasion of privacy is not acceptable under any circumstances. For this reason I do not recommend this establishment.

Unfortunate Exprience

We had a great stay at cypress cottage. The house is beautiful and Etienne was full of interesting information about the house and local area. The room was very comfortable. The shower was hot and powerful. We had private access away from the main house to our room. There was private parking at the back of the house.
We had breakfast which was lovely.
We visited the museum, went for a walk to the waterfall and had a chilled evening and evening meal at the Republic, within walking distance.

Great Swellendam stay

Our first trip back to Cypress Cottage in many years pleased to report that its just as good under the new owners and our hostess Nicky was a delight warm and welcoming nothing too much trouble breakfast was comprehensive and provided a great start to the day Pleased to find they have invested in solar an essential these days our only negative was coming back in the dark during load shedding and fumbling with the padlock to park the car please upgrade in the interest of guest security

Short Getaway

In this venerable building, the spirit of past centuries breathed charmingly. Friendly hosts 👍 The location is perfectly calm. Breakfast was lovingly prepared by the hostess.

A stylish house

A much needed break!  We had wonderful stay and absolutely love Swellendam.  Our host Richard, the owners son was fantastic and so welcoming and he cooks a mean breakfast! Felt very spoilt and well cared for from day one!  We spent 4 nights at Cyprus Cottage and Im so glad we took the time to settle in and spend a few days. Thank you so much!

A touch of R and R

Etienne was such a friendly host who took the time to welcome us and even spoke very well Afrikaans in very Dutch way so we could speak our native tongue which was a pleasant surprise. He knows a lot about different places and their history. Also he cares about your travel plans and gave us some great trips to avoid the big roads and experience some mountain passes on our way to Franschoek. Thank you Etienne. En ik ga zeker weer komen man als ik weer in de buurt ben! Dan praat ik graag verder met je over die toch wat vreemde boeren oorlog:) 

Lovely place with a history

You get to a beautiful old-fashioned house that is well-received. Then you move to the rooms that are in the backyard in front of the pool. Unfortunately, our house was really dark and cold even though it was early in the spring. Besides, there is no heating. Bathroom is extremely bare. Lack of sockets to charge the various modern devices and the multi-camera cupboard under the bed, so very uncomfortable. During this period of repeated blackout in South Africa the only solution offered was a solar lamp that we had to recover by ourselves in the evening when we got back into the dark. Good morning. Very kind staff.

Rooms to be reviewed

Wonderful location in a historic cottage. Cypress Cottage has a beautiful garden including pool and the rooms in the historic stables are cozy and equipped with everything you need and a lot of attention and love to detail. Our hosts especially Etienne, were very friendly and had a lot of tipps and recommendations for us. Breakfast was awesome, handmade and very good.  

Perfect stay at a perfect location

Very nice 18th century house, with a lot of charm; in the heart of the historic district of Swellendam: museum, restaurants, local market and entertainment on Saturday morning.

It's a lovely place.

We had an absolutely wonderful stay at Cypress Cottage. The hosts were incredibly inviting and made us feel instantly welcomed. They were also knowledgeable on the history of the area and eager to share stories. The room was not only beautiful and clean, but cosy and warm on a cold day in Swellendam. We would 100% go back!
