I stayed here with my mum, for a few days. The staff were very pleasant and helpful. The room was very clean and tidy. The surrounding area has lots of lovely walks, Whitehaven and Workington are close by.

Lovely place

If you’re into quirkiness, this place is for you. A converted school, the building is full of character. It’s a little dated, but clean and the staff and the owner are super friendly. The surroundings are beautiful and ideal for walking. We loved it and would stay there again next time.

Weekend break

In my honest opinion, the bedroom we had last weekend was nice and tidy. There is plenty of space for me and my wife. The bathroom was clean and well maintained. There were a few things that we didn’t like and a huge part of it is the receptionist who seems to look tired and was bossing her customers. I also didn’t like the fact that our room had no lights when we woke up early in the morning. Electricity sockets are working but not the lamps, toilet light or the main light which was weird.

Had a lovely weekend at the Grove Hotel. Ideal stay for husbands climbing Scarfell Pike & wives into Whitehaven to do some sightseeing & shopping. The hotel is lovely & clean, staff were extremely helpful & friendly & couldn't do enough for you. Food was delicious & large portions too. Would definitely recommend this hotel.

Weekend Stay

The whole building is run down and needs a complete refurb, it’s clearly not had any money spent on it since the bar area was “modernised” in the 70s. There are weeds growing everywhere, and the smell of old fat permeates most of the building, with the exception of the area that you walk through to the rooms that’s stinks of the tumble dryer and is possibly worse than the smell of old fat?
The rooms are tired and the mattress paper thin and with springs sticking into your back. So sleep isn’t something you’ll enjoy here.I was surprised that a mattress that thin could even be bought, but apparently it can! Mouldy bathroom ceiling and dodgy plumbing. If you have a room at the back of the building you will be treated to the view of a storage container (always nice) and the run down houses. The food is greasy but the locals seem to like it as the bar area was fairly busy. The staff though were friendly.
I would not stay here again if I was paid though, I’d rather sleep in my car, at least the smell would be better.

We recently spent a night at the hotel as part of a visit to the Lakes, on arrival the staff where friendly and welcoming and the entrance to the hotel through the “Girls Entrance” of the school was a quirky touch. On progressing through the hotel though, it was evident that this place is beginning to be past its best. From the musty smell of the tumble dryer which permeates the function room to the cooking smells from the kitchen, it really does need a slight overhaul to bring it back to its best. The rooms whilst clean and tidy, do need new mattresses, as ours had springs coming through and the pillows where flat. The hotel does have a bar area which again whilst clean is really stuck in the 1980’s with its decor!
