This hotel was booked as part of our honeymoon in Scotland as my (now wife) is a huge Outlander fan, so of course, I booked the Outlander room. 

The room is quite small but this wasn't a problem. It had some photos of the crew and cast taken during filming and a couple of pieces of 1940s furniture. Obviously the room is nothing like the 1940s room at 'Mrs Baird's B&B' as only the exterior of the Covenanter hotel was filmed while the inside shots were filmed in a studio. 

There were a few issues worth pointing out in that the very loose headboard bangs against the wall as soon as you sit on the bed, let alone sit back against it. I had to shove a cushion behind the headboard to stop it knocking the wall. The mattress was not the best either and very hard. There was no kettle, only a coffee-maker, so if you like tea you're out of luck. The lamp next to the bed has stains on it & needs replacing.  

Unfortunately, the bathroom is a lot worse...it needs a lot of attention. The ceiling is peeling & cracked with mould spots. The extractor fan does little to combat moisture and the window doesn't open. There was no sign above the sink warning about how hot the hot water tap is and my wife burnt her hand. The small step up to the toilet is a bit of a hazard as it's hard to see with the black slate tiles. There was also a slug on the window frame which is strange with the window not opening. The taps didn't turn off properly and were constantly dripping all night. 

I'm actually quite shocked at how bad the bathroom was considering the room is £130 a night. In fact, only one of the three windows opened and that was a struggle, which was very alarming as the fire alarm went off very late at night and no one came to tell us anything. This went on for around 20-30 minutes. If there had been a fire, I wouldn't fancy my chances with the windows not opening. 

We did mention this to the lady who served us breakfast in the  morning and she just said there was no fire and if there had been they would have let us know and that it was a false alarm. She didn't seem concerned about it at all and the disturbance it caused guests. 

All in all, I would have expected a lot more for the price I paid. I will finish by saying the food was lovely, all homemade and although I would eat here again, I definitely wouldn't stay here overnight. I haven't stayed in such poor accommodation in a long time and it's a real shame considering how popular Falkland is. 

I hope the owner of this B&B take all these concerns on board going forward. 

To date, I still haven't had a reply from the owner to my email regarding the poor condition of this hotel. 

Not Good Enough

We stayed in the James room for a 2 night stay.    Can’t rate this place highly enough.    Everything about it was bang on perfect!  Room and bathroom spotless.   
Great location for St Andrews and for outlander fans you can’t get better than this place.   The breakfasts were delicious and we ate one evening which was every bit as good as breakfast.   
Made to feel so welcome and nothing was too much trouble.   Loved sitting in the bar in the evenings and socialising with the locals.    
The Owner has personally worked very hard with his team to make this a special place and he has accomplished exactly that.    Keep doing what you’re doing at the Covenanter!!    👏🏼👏🏼

Just the best value for money and more!!!

Absolute shambles of a place. Took half our pre booked wedding groups food order  then decided the kitchen was shut and refused to take the other half’s. So only half sat with food. Promised chips for the rest then changed their minds. Terrible service. Avoid. 

Terrible Service

Deservedly very popular venue in classic Scots historic village.

We were overnight to attend a wedding preceded by lunch.  Everything was very good - food, drink, wine, service, room except the fire alarm went off on both days.  Acht.


Fine hotel with good food

We have been here regularly with our tour group, but we are treated very badly. The staff is not friendly at all and the food is really bad. We had to wait a very long time for everything. If you have to go to the toilet, they want to see money. In short, they will not see us here again. Pity

Bad service 

Stopped in for a late lunch and was ignored for a while and then was rudely told they were full. There were plenty of available tables so I find this hard to believe. No suggestion on wait time or anything, just bluntly turned away. We felt discriminated against and was surprised at how unwelcoming our first try at Scottish hospitality was.

Rude and Unwelcoming

As a big Outlander fan my daughter booked the outlander room for us for one night, it cost £110 for one night so my expectations were high! 
I must say I was disappointed with the room, for that price I expected a BATHROOM, not a shower room for a start…I know the room was not going to be like the one in outlander as I knew they filmed the inside in a studio but it was very small, they need to replace the mattress as it wasn’t comfortable. 
They need to put a proper kettle in the room, a coffee machine does not heat the water hot enough for a cup of tea, very poor! 
For £110 I expect a few products not shampoo/conditioner/shower gel fixed to the wall! The heating wasn’t on, it was cold! 
10/10 for breakfast! 10/10 for the lovely staff but please stop ripping people off with this outlander themed room! I think they should make it more of an outlander experience, not just a few photos here and there, maybe the books on a shelf and all the dvds with the player ready to watch? I’ve stayed in alot of b&bs and this for the price has been the worse value, I’ve paid £30 as a solo traveler in Aviemore and got amazing value! To top it I left my iPhone charger in the room, they haven’t answered my emails nor picked up the phone when I’ve called 

Poor value 

We stayed here for one night on a trip around Scotland. We arrived early after a drive from Edinburgh airport. The place is warm and inviting with lovely staff. It’s small but cosy and clean and has everything you need. There’s a coffee shop downstairs and a bar serving really good food with a good menu. We ate here for lunch, dinner and breakfast the next morning. The food was fresh and cooked well and we really enjoyed each meal. 
The staff were all really friendly and helpful. The area itself is beautiful and well worth a visit.

Lovely

small room with a shower that is part of the bathroom. Not sure how I feel about that. Very clean and comfortable, enough electrical outlets, No safe or fridge, lots of choice on the tv. The dinner was excellent. Small hotel with only a few rooms. Still much history. Right across the street from Falkland palace. Free Street parking. I liked the hotel a lot, especially since it was a filming location of Outlander. Would stay again.

Small room but a lovely hotel

Nipped in for a pitstop en route to the Falkland Palace and had a lovely little lunch. Nachos were particularly excellent and my sandwich and chips hit the spot. Couldn't fault and, despite the endless Americans wandering through the village hoping to catch an Outlander cast member, it was a great experience.
