What is there not to like about this place, clean rooms, comfortable beds, great food and a good variety of drinks. The staff were all hospitable, welcoming and attentive with nothing too much trouble for them. Though located next to a busy road, traffic noise was at a minimum

Absolutely filthy, avoid this place if you have any standards! 
We were put in room 5, the room was dated and grubby, the carpet was stained and filthy, the bathroom, well what can I say, it didn’t have a light, folding door was cracked and broke and shower base and floors were full of hair! Clearly not been cleaned, receptionist moved us to another room, room 1, slight improvement, electrics worked! Following morning, was advised they had cleaned shower and wanted us to move to room 5, still no light in shower room, was advised ‘ the room reflects the price you paid, if you don’t like it, check out’, The place was filthy, I have photo evidence! Avoid if you have standards

The image shown on the website bears no resemblance  to the room I was shown. Described as a superior double, there was not room to swing a cat.

A pokey room at a very high price. In the end I did not stay. It is not a hotel but a pub.

Went here for Sunday lunch, what a bad choice, the food was rank! 
Firstly the dinners came out with wrong meats on, finally come with right orders, no gravy on, dinner was not even luke warm, we sat waiting for cutlery no one appeared so had to hunt the place for own knives & forks, we sat waiting thinking they were going to bring out gravy boats but nothing & still no staff about so eventually my partner had to go to the kitchen & ask for gravy! The meat was plastic beef, very tough to cut & was tasteless, definitely not from a proper joint,  gravy was very thin & from cheap gravy mix, frozen puddings, what was supposed to be cauliflower cheese looked like lumpy mash, terrible🤮we just could not eat it, even worse with it being cold! We hung around for a bit to wait for staff to appear so I could explain politely why we couldn’t eat it but still no one appeared, so we left. 
I would never recommend this place as service was appalling & food was worse, avoid at all cost!!

Stay well clear!!!

Trip advisor reviews are very misleading, because the pub and its food gets most of the good reviews. However a vast majority of the hotel bed & breakfast reviews are awful. The back entrance smoking area had no ashtrays, grubby table & cig butts everywhere. In our room there was a blood spec stain on the main bed sheet. The bedside drawer was inside stained and filthy. We had the shared bathroom with no hot water, there was a crack in the sink. The bathroom window space was grubby and filthy. Some of the bedroom walls were also grubby & filthy. Furniture was old, tired & in need of upgrading

Grotty & Stay Away

We booked a double room for 4 nights. The bathroom and shower was good. Apart from that, very bad. The bed was broken and there were stains of blood on the sheets. The pub had a lot of regulars that was like family to the Landlord, as he said him self. They stole a phone of ours and credit card. 
We usually say that you get what you pay for. But even here, our advise is to stay away.

Stay away

just stayed 2nights with friends at THE QUEENS HEAD great place to stay very welcoming clean and comfortable. A short walk into town .Free parking on site was a  bonus and on sat/sun mornings breakfast is available aswell as food during the day. We had the breakfast which was massive and very tasty overall we would definetly recommend and hope to return ourselfs

lovely weekend away

I stayed for 1 night having booked a small single room with shared bathroom. Durham has a limited choice of accommodation and is usually ludicrously expensive, and I was visiting during the Lumiere festival so finding this place at under £30 on a Saturday night was great. To my surprise I was given a twin room so had an abundance of space. The staff were helpful and friendly in explaining everything and it was positive that there was lots of storage, plus in room hot drinks and toiletries.  

I’m not sure how many I was sharing the bathroom with, but I didn’t experience any issues waiting. It was quite dated and did not have a shelf for toiletries, so could do with a refresh, but was clean when I used it and I also saw it being cleaned on the morning of check out. There was also access to a shared kitchen that was an unexpected bonus as I had brought some food and it was great to be able to refrigerate it. 

You could hear people in the corridor and other rooms, but it did not cause much an issue as everyone seemed quite respectful during my visit. The road noise did not cause any problem with the double glazing.

Great clean stay and helpful staff

I wanted to stay here but unfortunately they did not have the availability I needed, so ended up staying at another local establishment, which did not serve food. Warned on arrival that there would be a wait for it to arrive as they had been inundated all at once due apparently to a very rare event, apparently a local League 1  football team had won something, but as as I only look at things in black and white was not that interested :-)  So we settled in for this wait  but  it was less than  25 minutes for the starters which is less time that I have waited in many others without any information. and the main courses arrived within 20 minutes of collection of the starter dishes. As for the food, a word of warning, the portion sizes are huge!!  Not only the starters but also the main courses,  easily enough for twp per portion, might try a sharing platter next time to see what they bring it out on....... but I must say the quality is fantastic. and prices are good. The staff are great, friendly and attentive and will definitely be back there, hopefully stopping there.

Amazing food and portion sizes are beyond belief

Spent 3 nights here, room was small but practical, could do with a wall mirror instead of small table top one, otherwise was very clean, warm, comfy bed and fantastic shower. All Staff were extremely friendly, if visited Durham again would definitely stay here as was great value for money.
