A promising stay in a beautiful bedroom at Shepherd House transpired to be a wholly disappointing stay. 

Having perused the website, Booking.com and various reviews, we booked the most expensive room of the three available (the Very, Very Large Room). On arrival, the room that greeted us bore no resemblance whatsoever to the photographs on the website – it was an entirely different room, and inferior in both style and standard. In contrast to the beautiful room advertised, our room was grey with low ceilings, brown chairs, router wires cascading from the fireplace and cheap-looking metallic furnishings.

During the stay, we raised our concerns with Clare on two occasions and asked to be put in the room that we had booked. We explained that the website refers to three individual rooms rather than three generic room rates (square footage is detailed, specific interior details are referenced and photos are shown of just one room), so at no point would we have assumed that there were multiple rooms available. She told us that we were in an ‘extra capacity’ room and that a note on the booking stating that the room was on the second floor should have been sufficient warning that the room would be entirely different to the one we had booked. We said that this seemed unreasonable and misleading but nothing was done to appease the situation – we felt uncomfortable, disappointed and cheated.

What is most upsetting is not that the room was uglier than the one on the website, but rather that it felt we had been intentionally misled. Had there been some transparency or honesty about the need for going in the extra capacity room then it may have been less of a bitter pill to swallow. The complete belligerence and lack of customer service was the final blow.

Cheated and misled - a wholly disappointing stay

Sheppherd House truly is a stunning place to stay. The Georgian house has been decorated beautifully and the attention to detail is spot on. The hosts are brilliant and have perfected the art of being there when you need them but also discreet. The homemade breakfasts are delicious and the glass of complimentary champagne on arrival is a lovely touch. We will certainly return as we truly felt relaxed and found Faversham to be an interesting and welcoming place too. It helps that they have an abundance of pubs in the town centre!

Fabulous house, wonderful hosts

This is the second time my partner and I have stayed at Shepherd House. Clare and Simon are the hosts and very welcoming, kind and attentive. Each time we've arrived we've been offered a drink to settle in and swiftly taken to our room, which is stunning. Beautiful claw-foot tub, garden view and large double bed. The entire house is full of vibrant and warm colours and stylish furniture. Our room floor was heated. Breakfast is delicious, pancakes especially. Right by the station, very convenient. Stylish, cosy and welcoming

We stayed here for a friend’s wedding and used the excuse for a long weekend. The house is stunning, Claire and Simon the hosts are brilliant - nothing is too much trouble - and the breakfast is fantastic! We’ll definitely be back!

Outstanding!

Hosts Claire and Simon were brilliant, making us feel very much at home, and not forgetting Delilah of course! The very bold colour schemes very much brightened the mood of the rooms and the atmosphere. We booked the large room, which is exactly what it said it was, large! I’ve seem the comments regarding no doors on the bathrooms, which is indeed true, but once one got used to the concept, there were no issues at all, with a large screen providing privacy if so desired. Tea/coffee facilities in the room were good, even had a small bottle of proper milk, none of that horrible UHT cartons for their guests, only the best will do!

Despite a limited selection for breakfast, who needs a large selection when this was so gorgeous. I’ve never had a ‘starter’ for breakfast before, very unique, and lovely!

If you had time, there is also a lovely walled garden to relax in, well away from the hustle and bustle of Faversham itself. Indeed the centre of the town is but a short hop, skip and a jump away, making the location ideal for exploring the town.

The only small point I would make, which in no way diminishes the score provided, is that the room we stayed in could maybe of had a small set of drawers to put ones ‘smalls’ in so to speak, and perhaps a small shelf in the bathroom as the sink was so wonderfully large, there was little room to place anything else on it (tooth brush, paste etc. but as said, these are only very minor points which should not detract you from staying at this wonderful boutique B&B
