Not been for a while. Pleased it hasn't changed. Local beers, log fire, and busy.  Four meals served efficiently by friendly staff. Good quality pub food. Glad we were not put off by the 2 previous reviews!

Great Pub

I called by recently to escape the rain whilst out walking. The fire was lovely and welcoming and so were the staff. It is a pity that the food didn't match up. I ordered the double hamburger with chips. The meat part was just a couple of poor quality burgers , not even birds eye standard. I ate most of it but put some in my pocket to give to the next passing dog i met. Everything else about the pub was lovely...the atmosphere, the location, the staff, the décor etc. It was the quality of the food that let it down.

Great place but needs to improve the food.

Always clean and tidy.  Friendly staff good pub food.  Visited lots of times over the years usually a few days early or late year.   Right on bus route to visit as far as Keswick.   Ambleside Grasmere  lovely to visit just before Christmas

Birthday treat

This is the second time my wife and I have stayed here. You are made to feel welcome by the excellent staff. We stayed in room 5, maybe not the biggest room but a size that met our needs. Shower/toilet room was a good size with the shower being refreshing. The bed was very comfortable, with both of us having a good nights sleep. The breakfast was very tasty, with the sausages to die for, but a good selection of nice food. We decided to have our evening meal here as well and again, compliments to the chef, never a bad meal. On the Sunday full roast beef dinner very nice. All the staff we came across were very warn friendly to us which helped it being a good stay. One of the good things about this place that it’s dog friendly.

Great place to stay and eat.

Stayed In Staveley at The Barn, which was an amazing property. I booked Friday nights dinner at the Eagle & Child, Was soo good we went back the following night. Food amazing, the owners were so lovely , so helpful, we took our dogs in.we were given a table so as the dogs would be comfortable . Finding this little treasure of a pub/ restaurant really made our weekend. Thank you for making our weekend for us and for being so welcoming. I would highly recommend to anyone visiting the Lake District. 

Amazing place, Amazing people

We went, as a family, on Saturday evening. 4 adults 1 child. Sat upstairs and the food was lovely. Staff were very friendly and efficient. One issue was I am not a fan of having dogs in the dining area, fair enough downstairs if eating in the bar,  but not in an area specifically for dining. Still if that's all I worry about... Some doggy people will disagree, non-doggy people will understand my point of view.

Super welcoming and friendly staff in a cosy country pub.  So nice to see a real fire roaring! I ordered a pie which was truly delicious and looked homemade! Would thoroughly recommended here if in the area or passing through!

Cosy pub with decent food

On Sunday (20th Nov) evening we went to the pub and it was marvellous, the customers and staff are so welcoming. After we returned home to Liverpool, I discovered that I had lost my mobile/wallet, (cards and cash included) my wife rung my mobile and someone from the pub answered it and I have today received it all via special postage. Thankyou so, so much.  We definitely return in the future to this lovely Inn.  x 

Beautiful and trustful place to relax 

Lovely pub with amazing quirky decor! Nice friendly staff and atmosphere. Food was ok, but just standard pub food - and not presented very eloquently and a bit bland. I would go back for a drink but not food. Reason for rating is because they are the only proper pub in Stavely so I do think they could try a bit harder to impress with the food.

Brilliant atmosphere and drinks

Nice location and from the outside it looked lovely - we had pre booked but when we arrived I was horrified to see it was so dirty inside - stuff hanging from the ceiling had not been dusted for months let alone cleaned. 
We were told “table 6 and 7 and if anyone sat on them, kick em off”

I ordered sirloin steak and salad. I had seen the chips were either oven chips or frozen .
What arrived for £21 was 
Oven chips, a raw mushroom, a price of steak full of gristle - think it was just cheap cut. 
It looked unappetising and was tough as old boot leather.
