We have just spent Christmas at Fat Lamb it was absolutely fantastic. Food was excellent, nothing too much trouble. Really enjoyed the Panto and train museum. Will be back next year, with motorhome and another helping of the Christmas break

Fat Lamb at Christmas 2023

We were a large family and friends group and stayed locally, celebrating a 50th Birthday.  On recommendation we booked for a Sunday roast. The young and enthusiastic staff did their best and I appreciate its a bit of a tough call serving a large party all at once. But the food was so poor I felt I had to write something. All lukewarm, tasteless potatoes, bland overcooked vegetables and just the most awful chewy inedible meat. (beef and lamb)  My school dinners from 50 years were better. The worst roast dinner I have ever eaten in a restaurant. My review is not alone and some very poor reviews go back over six years. So this is nothing new. This pub trades on its location, and its fascinating interior. The beer was very good. But there is no excuse in serving such appalling food at quite expensive prices. Sadly because of the occasion I was unable to speak to a member of staff at the time. Go for a pint or two but don't eat here.

We were on a drive out and seen The Fat Lamb Inn signposted so thought we would try it for some lunch. 

As we walked in and there was other table in and one about to leave. The inn had a theme of American car memorabilia. Which was very interesting to look at. 

At the small bar with very little variety and no draft soft drink. We ordered a gin and a coke. Which I think came to about £8 the gin came in a half glass (not a gin glass) and the lemonade was from a flat bottle. The coke was from a glass bottle. I was ready to pay but told to give a name for the tab. Which I did. 

We were then seated at our table and told our drink would be brought over… we must of waited about 10 mins for our already poured drinks. Our order was taken (we both ordered from the specials board) and while we waited we appreciated the old memorabilia. 

Our food arrived, one on the dishes were wrong, which got sent back. They had two lamb options on the board - which we didn’t realise but they hadn’t confirmed which lamb when taking the order. So this meant I was left with my meal basically eating alone while we waited for the second meal. There was no offers to keep the meal heated so we could eat together. 

My meal was hit and miss. The mash tasted like microwave mash if I am honest. And the beef wasn’t ideal either. It was chewy and thin. The Yorkshire pudding was stodgy and tough, however the roast potatoes were delicious and that is what I ate. 

The second meal then came out which my partner tried and instantly said no, the meat was meant to be slow cooked lamb belly, but it was all fat and hard to get his knife through. 

We decided to leave the unfinished meals. 

As we got to the bar we explained that the meals were barely touch. And that the lamb was basically fat - her response was well it is the belly (I assume the young lady didn’t realise it actually comes from the breast)  she went out back to see what to do as we had technically had three meals. 

1. Their mistake I’m not checking the order
 2. Both meals not up to satisfaction. 

They gave us no discount and for two meals and two drinks it came to £44.90. We left the inn very hungry and not very happy. 

I would not recommend their special board at all. I can’t comment on the rooms nor the rest of the menu. 

The two young ladies who were serving, seemed very nice and polite. Maybe a little more training to help build their confidence and skills. 

We may of just visited on a bad day, but we have decided we won’t be visiting again.

Very good pies, lovely and friendly staff, decor is eccentric in a nice way, very interesting to look at all the memorabilia, made for an excellent evening out. Dog friendly!! Would highly recommend, best food in Ravenstonedale.

Great!

Stayed here for our final night whilst walking a section of the coast to coast.  Have stayed here before on another walking holiday and coincidentally had the same room!  I was pleased to be back as the bar and restaurant has great character and is full of such interesting memorabilia as well as good beer.  We all fully enjoyed the food in the restaurant and particularly the breakfast, knowing that we could relax and didn't have to walk over the fells in the lashing rain and gales.
The bedroom in all honesty is fairly basic in its decoration and furnishings but is clean and adequate.
The inn is fairly isolated if you're without transport and we had to get the train from Kirkby Stephen.  We had been told that taxi's are few but the owner  kindly offered us a lift in his 'old' jaguar which he is in the process of restoring.  Good luck with it and thank you again.

Atmospheric bar and restaurant

Went for a family meal, food ok but not worth the price, daughter found a hair in her meal! Service not great, took a while to come and take our order and then after we had finished our meal waited 15 minutes to get our plates cleared and ask for a pudding menu but know one came so didn’t bother and went to the bar to pay,  after telling the lady with short dark hair behind the bar about the hair she laughed I was so shocked not apology didn’t even seem to care. Won’t be returning and such a shame with only living 15 minutes away! 

Don’t bother 

Ate at two pubs in the Ravenstonedale area and Fat Lamb won hands down. Great selection of food and the Steak pie was best I have ever tasted. Also great motor memorabilia to look at around the pub. Really worth a visit.

We stopped here for lunch on a rainy day drive whilst on holiday.  Staff were very friendly and attentive.  A beautiful, quiet place to enjoy some delicious food and look around what has become a museum of sorts.  Food was freshly cooked and arrived in a timely manner.  Thank you for being so welcoming.  

A lovely lunch spot

Fascinating surroundings in the pub, especially if you are into cars.  Friendly staff.  Drinks expensive.
Don't bother with the nature reserve, it is completely overgrown and all bridges and hides falling apart.

A mixed result

Booked a table for an evening meal
We opted for the CHEESE &ONION &POTATO PIE  with usual sides 
What a mistake very stodgy pastry pie full of small unpeeled potatoes without any sign of cheese or onion
Asking the waitress why this was she informed us the person makes the pies like this and pours a cheese and onion sauce over the potatoes
So therefore it's a potato pie with cheese and onion sauce (you need to change the title before trading standards pick up on this
It certainly isn't a cheese and onion pie
And to top it off my wifes slice of pie tasted of meat and potato so must be using same pans for meat dishes and vegetarian pies
Thechips were brown but hard in the middle couldn't fault the beans as they were probably Heinz
£16.50 per portion Daylight Robbery
You really need to employ someone who can make pies or stop serving them
