This is probably the worst place I’ve ever stayed. I arrived to be ‘greeted’ by the very grumpy and unfriendly Thai owner who really couldn’t have cared less. 

The room was up numerous stairs (I had a lot of luggage) and was lack lustre, in desperate need of re-decorating and some decent furnishings. The towels were thread bare, the duvet too small for the bed, the pillows were smelly and bed linen only fit for recycling. 

I couldn’t face breakfast as the breakfast room smelt musty and grubby and was in desperate need of a deep clean. 

I do not recommend this establishment and couldn’t wait to leave.

Dreadful

Booked a last minute room for the lowest price in Lerwick (by quite a margin) and was very satisfied.
Great location in a quiet residential area, just 10 minutes walk from the town centre.
Staff were lovely and very helpful.
My room was basic but clean and everything worked. Bed was comfortable and there was plenty of storage space and tea/ coffee provided.
Definitely a solid budget option and I'd certainly stay again.

Great Value

The low point of my uncomfortable week at this hotel was witnessing the Thai owner ignore a fire alarm and turn her back on concerned guests. The alarm went off after 11pm on 30 September, we guests gathered in the main hall ready to evacuate. The owner came out, turned off the alarm at the panel stating it was room 3. Her only reaction was to stick her head around the corner and sniff the air. She then announced that room 3 must be smoking, and without making any further attempts to check on the safety of room 3 or any possible fire, made to return to her staff quarters.  We guests all clamoured with concerns, asking her to at least knock on room 3's door in case they had for example fallen asleep with a cigarette. The owner completely ignored us and went back ot her quarters. It was left to one of the guests to knock on Room 3's door and ask about their wellbeing. Appalling negligence of fire safety and I left the next day to move to a different hotel as I no longer felt safe. This was after putting up with more than a week of erratic and indifferent housekeeping (I don't think they changed my bedding once), a bowl-shaped bed ineffectively propped up with a sheet of plywood, worn-out pilly bedding and threadbare towels, unfriendly staff whose English is not great, and the paper-thin wall between my room and next room's bathroom - I could hear absolutely everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, it was as if they were using the toilet in my room.  The only pros here are the convenience for the town centre and Wool Week events, and the breakfasts were good.

Scary fire alarm negligence, uncomfortable stay

When I booked this hotel it offered the best value for money, so my expectations were not high. It's a traditional, straight forward guest house with very few frills. Situated in a quiet area within easy reach of the town centre. The parking was good and the room offered everything I needed. The staff were friendly and helpful and  breakfast was good too.

This guest house was on a good location for visiting Lerwick.
Breakfasts were OK and parking was good.

Rooms were very tiny - and there was no lift - so upper accommodation required hefting your baggage.
Overall - the accommodation options in town were quire limited - and this choice was quite OK

Decent accommodation in Lerwick

Stayed several nights here  Up Helly Aa. Bed was very comfortable. The view was nice from the upstairs window. Lounge chairs were comfortable. Staff friendly. Breakfast was excellent.  Able to walk downhill to town, but it's uphill going back. No elevators, but received help with suitcase. Quiet.  Would stay there again. 

Cozy, walking distance to town. 

Stayed due to a flight cancellation (due to a blizzard).  Staff very friendly and helpful.  Rooms in need of an update but the beds were OK.  Shower cubicle was small and breakfast very average.  Location was a bit out of town so a bit challenging to get into town to get some dinner in a blizzard.  No dinner available at guest house.

Friendly Staff

We'd chosen the Glen Orchy for our stay in Lerwick because the price was very good though it's a bit of a walk into town - but it was worth it, not only because the walk into town actually provides wonderful sights of Lerwick and the sea behind it, but also because the hotel is a real gem, very tastefully furnished, with lounges, a breakfast room and en suite bathrooms with bathtub. And most of all, the Asian lady who runs the place is absolutely delightful, very friendly and helpful, and she also recommended the Thai restaurant in town to us where we had a couple of fantastic dinners!

A lovely place run by lovely people

Great stay. Friendly staff. Room was spotless. Breakfast was superb - lots to choose from and freshly prepared. Short walk to town centre. Would have rated higher had there been a bar which is indicated on pictures from booking.com. Overall would recommend.

Great stay, would recommend

There were good points about Glen Orchy but I will start with the negative. The hotel is dated but I am not concerned about decor. What the proprietors should be addressing is the little touches which make a hotel feel comfortable. Firstly, the bedding is worn and very basic quality, polycotton, bobbly pillowcases, a valence instead of a bottom sheet, which wouldn’t tuck in so the bed got very wrinkled overnight; toiletries consisted of the very cheapest large dispenser over the bath, whereas individual bottles of good quality products wouldn’t cost a great deal and would add a touch of luxury. The shower over the bath was difficult to get to work until I asked for help from the receptionist. A small instruction note would have helped! The bathroom was lined with plastic boarding rather than tiling which made it seem dingy and not very clean. The bath mat appeared to be dirty. The tea and coffee in the room was of the most basic quality, and no biscuits. At least the mug was a decent size and not one of those minute tea cups often found in hotels. 
On the positive side, staff were friendly and efficient and the breakfast excellent quality, particularly the range of fresh fruit. Like most hotels I have stayed at, the coffee was, in my view, undrinkable, so I advise sticking to the tea. 
It was useful to be able to deposit my suitcase in the morning of my arrival on the ferry, though it is a long walk up a very steep and windy hill to the hotel.
