Just had 2 nights stay here over the New Year weekend 23/24.
Brilliant.
The Hotel is excellent and the head chef Ken and his kitchen team knock out not only the best breakfast iv ever had but his menu at lunch and Evening is fantastic.
Brilliant food.
The staff at the hotel are so friendly and helpful.

Great pub and great selection of drinks.
Bar staff are excellent.
What a fantastic stay and can't wait to book again.

Just called in for Sunday lunch, as we parked up we were met with the chef shouting and swearing at 2 children, they must have been his because they got in his car, I was so close to ringing the police !!! He arrived when we were seated & went to the kitchen. The Sunday lunch was off so opted for a cottage pie.....the worst I have ever had in my life. We were considering a few days stay there next year but no chance in hell, the waitress was lovely & the quirky bar was really pleasant, none of us enjoyed our food, but decided to pay & get out to never return. Chef keep your private life away from the public eye & have some respect for your children

Never again

This was our first stay at the hotel. The staff were all extremely welcoming, friendly and could not be more helpful. We stayed in a room at the front of the hotel overlooking the square. The room was cozy but very comfortable, clean and well provisioned. Our stay was over the weekend and our room was over a very lively bar but it didn’t disturb our sleep at all. My wife and I had two wonderful night’s sleep. The meal we had in the restaurant was fabulous. Prior booking is a must because it is very popular. The atmosphere in the restaurant and bar is perfect.

Breakfast is a very friendly affair. Breakfast itself couldn’t have been better with a good selection on offer. This was our first stay here but we will definitely be back. Loved it.

Great Place To Stay

Firstly thank you to all the staff who made our stay very welcoming.  Though the room was small, as we had two dogs, it was good enough for our purposes.

The breakfasts were excellent, though from a limited menu and the whole atmosphere of the place exuded warmth and comfort.  We ate in the hotel one evening and that was pleasant after a long drive.  As were the surroundings.

What I take exception to, is the ferocity of the locals, who seem to think it is their god-given right always to occupy the same chairs.  A reality check is necessary here, as they need to get used to the fact that the Richard the Third is an hotel, and when you have spent the whole day dealing with the British public, the last thing you need is, comments like,'bloody residents are taking over, and other unpleasant and cowardly remarks.  All they had to do was ask, or say something, rather than sitting in their little clique muttering darkly about the residents.  Yes, it made me and my friends uncomfortable, but we decided to have another drink.

The hotel owners need to be aware of this.  The locals may spend £15.00 on two pints of ale each night, but the business sense of letting them cause such ill-feeling, does not make the books balance, as we spent over £400.00 in four days.  The hotel is likely to continue to lose money if this situation persists.  Surely a specific and comfortable room for the residents would alleviate this.  Or perhaps the locals need to be spoken to, as I for one will not return until this matter is addressed.

Hostile locals ruined what could have been a great experience.

It's a real shame to have to give this stay a poor review as the staff were all lovely, and the food was really nice. However fundamentally we came to sleep and we didn't get any at all.

You expect some background noise when you stay above a pub, and when we went upstairs there was a bingo night on which we didn't hear at all. The patrons outside weren't particularly noisy so at about 11pm it seemed we were in for a good night's sleep (bar the heat but not much anyone can do about that).

Unfortunately about half 11, after the pub had shut, it became really noisy with about 4 people arguing, banging about, shouting, swearing etc. They were in the hotel, they were out, they were in, back out. We thought maybe other guests and that they would settle soon. It got noisier and noisier, eventually they went upstairs above us and the light fixtures were rattling in our room as they essentially had a party right above our heads.

At 1:30am it became clear they weren't slowing down so we went downstairs to complain and the staff member informed us it was the landlords daughter. To the credit of the poor staff member they went straight upstairs to tell them to quiet down, which they did for maybe 2 hours, commencing again at 3:30am until well past 5. We gave up at that point, it was obvious we weren't going to sleep.

I've seen the exact same sort of report in other reviews, so it seems like this is a regular thing, even on weeknights (this was not a weekend stay). We left exhausted and stressed, no member of staff asked how we had slept, I've a funny feeling there was a reason for that!

I can recommend the food and the staff were nothing but nice to us. But please don't book to stay the night here unless you will be out most of the night. This was beyond normal noise for a pub. 

Landlords daughter likes to party

Lovely quirky hotel in the market square.  Clean if small room which is expected in such an old building.  Lovely friendly staff and delicious food. Our only niggle was housekeeping.  For the price I would  have  expected the waste bins emptied, tea trays replenishing, and wet towels replaced  as they couldn't dry in the room  and we stayed for two nights. Apart from that we enjoyed our stay in a lovely  area of the country.

Check your dinner receipt! We were overcharged as they charged us for someone else’s food bill. When we complained they ignored us and never replied. Charged us £60 for an average £45 meal. We’ll never go again. It’s a bit rough. The staff had no idea what they were doing.

I stayed at the Richard III hotel for three nights in March. It's a lovely Inn and I enjoyed my stay very much. The rooms are neat and cosy, the landlady and staff very friendly and helpful. Perfect for every Ricardian. Will definitely be back! 

Perfect stay

Lunchtimes are warm, even in January, with open fires that are actually lit. The barmaid was hospitable and welcoming. Good range of beers and easy listening music rather than the usual loud offerings which are not suitable for an eating environment. Will certainly be back tomorrow.

Warm and Hospitable

I have been coming to Middleham for many years, myself and my husband absolutely love it so we decided it was time we actually booked to stay the night in Richard the Third and booked for 2 nights in the Racing Room. We were bringing our dog with us so this room was ideal because of the size. On Saturday 27th August we were shown up to our room…Agincourt. Hmmm, this wasn’t what I booked, it was tiny. Hardly any room around the bed for 2 adults never mind a dog too. I went back down to reception and the lovely blonde girl was apologetic but there were no other vacant rooms but they might be able to move rooms tomorrow. 
That night we went to bed around 11pm. There were still people enjoying a drink and having a laugh and we expect that when staying in a pub. Instead of tapering off the noise got louder and louder. There was arguing, drinks being thrown, women screeching. It sounded like a free for all. Eventually most people left but still there was around 4 people in the bar below our room laughing loudly, singing I’m in the mood for dancing (I most certainly wasn’t at that time of the morning) It was 4am by the time everyone left and we managed to get some sleep!

Whilst I was awake until this ungodly hour, I used this time productively to check other reviews on this hotel. Lo and behold there were others complaining of noise til all hours, someone went down into the bar to complain, one couple left in the middle of the night yet no one seemed to get any apology. 

I thought long and hard about leaving this review firstly because Sharon tried to sort out our problem by moving us to a different room (albeit still above the bar and the same size as the one we weren’t happy with) We turned down that room and decided to try and find elsewhere to stay. Luckily we were given a refund for our 2nd night but unfortunately no partial refund offered for the previous night where we paid £105 for 3 hours sleep and a breakfast. and secondly because after reading the previous reviews I could see that Sharon doesn’t take kindly to negative comments and responds in a unprofessional manner sometimes. However, I decided that others planning to stay need warning in advance. I just wish I had read the reviews on Tripadvisor before booking.
