This pub is beautifully remote. The food is always great and the people working there are so lovely. I introduced this place to friends and they love it too! Fabulous place to stay. The river at the front is stunning and a walk along it to Watersmeet should always be done.....whatever the weather

Great stay!

Had a couple of days here over a weekend and found the pub cosy and comfortable. Really nice welcome from the couple managing the pub and the food  and beer was good, (especially the full English breakfast).

One thing, the river across the road was quite noisy but not surprising really, as the good old Devonshire weather lived up to its name, it poured down most of the weekend causing the river to be like a torrent. 

Thank you for looking after the wife and I so well, would definitely stay here again

Nice weekend away

This was early 2023 
.We live fairly near but …15 miles …hadn’t been for a few years .
We only stayed for lunch .
Day was damp and cloudy. It was really cold inside and the log burner wasn’t lit . Sooo unwelcoming .
We kept coats on ! 
Menu was small and £17.99 for fish n chips ! 
Nothing special at all ….tarter sauce runny and wasn’t home made ……coffee was weak …….we couldn’t see a dessert menu and none was offered when they cleared the table . 
We decided we wanted to leave  .Glad to be out of the place . Won’t be returning .

Cold and expensive

What a gem! The pub is in a beautiful location, and walks a plenty, two or four legged friends. Paul and Stella and of course Bailey, are a credit to the Rockford! Jobs to keep them busy for a while, having inherited recently, but maintaining a lovely environment to stay, and eat. The room we had was nicely appointed, with smart TV, usb stations, tea and coffee, hairdryer and copious amounts of hot running water. It was lovely and clean, and nice quality bedding and towels. Really nice touch in bathroom included a pot with cotton wool balls and buds etc. The breakfast was filling because of the quality products being used from butchers and baker. The menu isn't vast, but covers most tastes and vegan/vegetarian option. But the excellent quality and presentation is lovely! Steak and ale pie, was so nice I had it two nights running! Burgers were a delightful challenge! Things will only get better in their capable hands, and we look forward to our next visit. They also do dinner bed and breakfast deals, so ask, as its nice not to have to trudge out around the lanes for your evening meal 😋 


Super pub, food, stay....

Stella, Paul, Tom and even Tim (you will understand when you stay..) are wonderful. They are kind, attentive and provide a super experience. The food and ambiance inspired go some way to matching the extraordinary location. I urge you to ensure you can spend a few days.

Brilliant.

Beautiful location. Had high expectations based on reviews. However exceedingly disappointed in the quality of the evening meals. Expensive small and tasteless steak, fried fish covered in too much slightly undercooked batter with watery tasteless fish. The next evening's meal also not a good experience. On a positive note the staff were very friendly and the breakfast was good. 

Don't trust reviews!

I really enjoyed my stay in this 17th century inn nestled deep in a wooded valley next to the river East Lyn in Exmoor. The hosts Paul and Stella were very welcoming and warm, and the bar man/waiter did an excellent job too. I loved the pub food, which was hearty and very well cooked. The local real ales were a treat too. 
The location is perfect for hiking, with great walks up and down the river, to the coast and Lynmouth straight from the front door. The pub has a wonderful warm, cosy guest room to relax in afterwards with a pint. In fact the whole hotel including my room was warm and comfortable, so peaceful too, with just the sound of the river at night.
Highly recommended if you like traditional English food, beer and accommodation.


A wonderful 17th century inn, great food, beer and atmosphere.

Lovely peaceful location ideal for walking we have been returning over last 10 years our little piece of paradise . Food is excellent good selection of local ales and cider. Room 2 very comfortable sound of the river to lull you to sleep

Wonderful location 

A lovely little old pub down a beautiful wooded Exmoor valley.  Cosy bar, good pub food, lovely little pub rooms and friendly staff.  Superb walks through oak woodland beside the river.  Brilliant
The only thing to complain about is the number of second homes that have destroyed the community - but that's another story across the country! Hopefully, the pub can flourish

Exmoor gem

Fabulous! Can not find fault at all. Paul and Stella were perfect hosts, room lovely with perfect view of the amazing river. Food, bar and  atmosphere all 100%. Did not want to leave and plan to visit again next year
