We had booked a room in one of the hotels annexes 3 minutes walk from the main hotel building. The staff were friendly and very helpful but the entrance to the room smelt like mould. The room itself was clean but very basic and still a slight damp smell. There was damp on the walls and a small tv in the far corner. It has potential but looks like no effort was made in decorating it. The mattress was very thin and unfortunately the people above us were thumping their feet most of the night. Like I say, clean but very basic.

The old Lodge - Annex

We booked in this hotel as all of the places to stay in the area were expensive and they had a modern cheaper option in an annex that looked lovely. The price of rooms in the hotel were £120+ without breakfast for an out of season Saturday night. Annex rooms were £88, good value and modern we thought. 
On arrival we were advised we had been moved into the main hotel and thought 'lovely' this was an upgrade. 
Our room was a standard double [as I later researched]. 
It was;
- Old, dated, decoration circa 1990's, furniture who knows? 
- Bed, a concaved double mattress in which you rolled together, an extremely creaky bed, so any movement woke you up.
- all floor boards followed suit.
- 22 inch 25 year old TV on the wall with cables dangling to the plug sockets and a remote with dead batteries & no back to it.
- shower room, fair size with a tiny tiny corner shower cubicle, mould on ceiling and shower sealant. Very little water pressure.
- Being unseasonably warm; when we tried opening the windows only one of the two windows opened 10cm the other was painted shut.
- the curtains were old, had holes and not fully or properly hung, it was messy. 
- our conclusion to this - it wasn't an upgrade but they didn't want to put the heating on in the annex? Why advertise it then?
We wouldn't advise anyone to stay at this hotel until the standard is raised to an expected level for the money paid.

Extremely Disappointed

We were a little bit worried about the hotel given some of the reviews, but it was absolutely outstanding. We had the best room I think! Four poster bed and a bath in the room. It was gorgeous. Lovely and rustic and perfect stay. We will definitely be back!

Excellent stay and service!!!

Considering we stayed in a feature room, four poster bed and paid £204, I would certainly have expected the quality to be higher. 
The room was tired, mould near the bathroom window, behind the bed on the wall, the bathroom skirting near the bath had previously soaked up water and needed replacing, the silicone to the bath needed renewing, some of the tile grout needed replacing. Generally a tired room that needs a revamp. Breakfast was average, toast came out a good 15 mins before the breakfast and therefore was cold.

Tired, needs a revamp

Had a lovely weekend at The Old Lodge, a beautiful old building with so much character. The room was large with two double beds(Room3) with a lovely view over the gardens at the back. Very quiet room and peaceful and clean. The Hotel bar is beautiful with a large open log fire, cozy and inviting, ideal for a cold rainy evening to relax. A big shout out to Lynsey who was on the desk and bar over the weekend. She really is an asset to this hotel and couldnt do enough to make  our stay enjoyable. Nothing was too much trouble and helped us order a takeaway when we had issues with the  ordering  online.  A lovely girl ! Also Beth who was on the sunday morning , the staff make this hotel, Hospitality at its best! The breakfast was beautiful, tasty and well presented  and really enjoyed the filter coffee,   We will most definetly be back  be back.

WEEKEND BREAK

Visited today for Sunday lunch and it did not disappoint.  Lucy and her team do a fantastic job with the food and Beth fantastic front of house.  Kept my 2 year old granddaughter entertained.  Well worth a visit

Great few days! Had a lovely few nights here catching up with friends. Rooms lovely, garden is well looked after and staff really looked after us.  Delicious evening meal. 

It’s an old and very interesting building so please do not expect no creaky floorboards and the odd cobweb!!! Will be back

Great few days

We were a party of 6, occupying 3 'Standard Rooms' on a bed and breakfast basis, over 4 nights. We visited 2 years ago, staying in the same 3 rooms and gave the hotel some feedback then which they haven’t attended to. 
Unfortunately, the standards in the hotel have fallen significantly since our last visit. 
However, not all is bad and we didn’t see Basil or Manuel but could have done!  

Positives. 
The hotel looks lovely and the gardens are great, although to call a patio area a beer garden is stretching it a bit. 
The (skeleton) staff are all very friendly and happy to help where they can, even though they are short staffed. A shout out to Beth ( manager), Lyndsey and the chef Lucy for their cheerful dispositions, while running the hotel almost on their own. 
The hotel is well situated to walk into Malton town, with several bars and restaurants available. 
We had several problems during our stay (see below) and after a meeting with Beth, she agreed to take up the issues with the owner. 
A Sunday evening meal (only 2 courses) is provided as part of the cost of a stay and was good and enjoyed by all.
Plenty of parking spaces.  

Negatives.
 All our rooms were shabby, with marked wallpaper and dust/cobwebs in several places. 
We had no hot water for 2 days/evenings. We had no central heating for the 4 days/nights, so the rooms were cold and the towel rails didn’t work, so towels stayed damp. 
Beth did arrange for electric heaters which helped. 
No shelf for toiletries in the bathroom so we had to use the top of the toilet cistern! 
Poor quality and small shower toiletries provided.  Shower head had pink mould on it in our room.
No toilet brush available but the toilets aren’t properly cleaned by the housekeepers either. 
The beds in each room make a loud creaking noise as you either sit or lie or turnover on them, because the bases are broken. This causes disturbed sleep. I mentioned this problem 2 years ago and nothing has been done. 

Wardrobe handle came off one door and the other door can’t be opened because it is alongside a bedside table. 
Parts of each room and even the public ares are dirty, with dust and cobwebs. 
The bar area is cozy, but some furniture is dilapidated and table surfaces weren’t cleaned for days, until we mentioned it!
The WiFi signal is appalling.
Be careful when returning to the hotel along the driveway in the dark, as they don't always put on the outside lights!!

The hotel lacks some modern facilities you would expect for a hotel with star ratings, such as a pool, sauna, gym, library etc. Basically, all you get is a bar and a terrace facing the garden.  

The cost of the stay was nearly £560 plus the cost of drinks for each couple. Compensation for all our problems? A round of drinks for having no hot water for 1 night.  One couple was offered a room upgrade for the last night ( which they declined) but the rest weren’t. 
Despite asking for a partial refund, as you now have to pay for your stay on arrival, this was refused.

  In conclusion, we were all very disappointed and felt let down by the management. Not value for money!
This business could thrive if they only put in more effort with housekeeping and maintenance. The manager also said they don’t take any notice of Trip Adviser reviews but perhaps this review would help anyone researching a stay at The Old Lodge.

Malton's own Fawlty Towers

Its a former Tudor gate lodge circa 1602 set in spacious tree bounded grounds with ample parking within walking distance of the town
We had a wonderful welcome from Lyndsey the receptionist who subsequently was the Bar staff and finaly the breakfast waitress!
The rooms and overall furnishings and decor have been well reported in other reviews
There are three bike sheds in the garden which cannot be locked so bring your own

HISTORIC BUILDING

Had a great time all down to the staff . It was my son's wedding and Beth went above and beyond to make the day great . Rooms not best best 100%  on staff . All day Beth was there trying to make sure all went well so the 5 star goes to staff
