We had to change the night we were to stay at The Smithaleigh by one day, we spoke to Booking .com who said ok they will speak to the manager but would swap the dates , I had no response so I rang and spoke to the manager?owner? he said no chance and Booking .com had no right to offer, he obviously stopped any cooperation.
Just terrible service all we wanted to do is change one night.

We were really disappointed with this accommodation which in reality is nothing like the photos or information on the internet. We had booked an apartment for 2 weeks and left after 1 week as soon as we found somewhere else to stay. 

We booked a 2 bedroom apartment for 4 of us (2 adults and 2 teenagers) and agreed with the owner that it was dog friendly and he was happy for us to bring our  well behaved Cockerpoo. On arrival we were greeted by the comment, 'I didn't realise you were bringing a dog...'  We reminded him of the conversation in which he had joked about it not being a Great Dane who would slobber on the furniture, and we asked where would be suitable to walk the dog.  The answer was down the grass verge at the side of the main road (A38) directly outside.  There was no access to any gardens or fields as advertised, and no footpaths within walking distance. A major problem for any dog owner. 

On arrival we realised that it was more like a motel surrounded on 3 sides by an ugly tarmac carpark, which was used every day by lorries and workmen's vans, who parked directly outside our ground floor apartment windows.  Noisy, smelly and ugly to look at - had to keep the curtains closed as they were looking straight in to the apartment. No idea where the pictures of a restaurant or bar came from - certainly no facilities of any sort on site,  not even a communal washing machine and there was no freezer or freezer box in the fridge. 

The inside of the apartment bore no resemblance to the pictures.  Despite Covid and the need for extra vigilant cleaning, the window sills and blinds were dusty with dark coloured old dust that had clearly been there for some time and would be harbouring any bacteria or viruses around.  The extractor fan in the bathroom was broken and there was mould growing on the bathroom ceiling and grouting - the only option was to open the window to get fresh air (and wave to the workmen whilst on the toilet or in the shower). The Shower support was rusty and the bath was cracked. The seal on the shower screen was old and inefficient and therefore the bathroom floor flooded every time the shower was used.  The plug holes were disgusting and had not been cleaned out for some time. 

The bedrooms were no better - pillows and mattresses were stained. Dusty fake flowers in the windows and stained cushions on the beds. We were short of towels on arrival and it was with great reluctance that we were able to secure towels for 4 people.

The sitting area had seating for 3 - we had booked for 4 people - and asked if we could have a 4th chair of some sort.  We were told by Simon that he had no more and we would have to use a dining room chair to sit and watch TV in the evenings.  We opted to buy a camping chair instead. 

There was insufficient crockery and cutlery for 4 people - we bought 4 new mugs for our own use and opted to eat out as much as possible. 

When we informed Simon that we were leaving he did not seem interested in why that was and just told us to post the key through the permanently closed reception door. 

If you are desperate for a 1 night stop over en route to the ferry or something, fine, but otherwise do not stay here.

Totally mis-sold - looks nothing like the photos - do not stay here

We looked on Tripadvisor before booking this hotel for our overnight stay last on Fri 22nd Nov. We looked closely at the photos of the place posted on Tripadvisor and where very impressed and booked a twin room on the ground floor. On the day of our stay my wife received a call to say we had been upgraded to a ‘studio’ in which was a second double bed. Lovely we thought having seen an example of a lovely room which a serene at the foot of the bed am we was very much looking forward to our stay and after a battle with traffic through Plymouth and the roadworks in the area I fancied a drink too. Well that was a laugh. No bat at all, err look at their photos, I think I see a bar there and a restaurant nice grounds etc etc. None of these where there even though they are shown on here. Now look at my photos of the ‘upgraded’ room. Freezing cold, so much so that we could not shower before we went out to see ‘Red Shoes’ in Plymouth. Toilet not fixed to floor and moved about and also made a loud noise when sat on; pubic hair on the chain for the basin plug, tiny piece of screwed up and once wet toilet paper now dried and stuck inside the bath, which was cracked, filthy shower head disgusting. Under the bed was a dirty tray I assume from previous occupiers. Oh and our room was now up a flight of stairs carpeted in a well used carpet my feet could stick to. 

This is NOT the hotel shown in the photos they’ve posted on here. Well the car park area is and the shots of the buildings around that but nothing else at all I don’t think. To be fair, there is extensive work being carried out but that forgives nothing in my view, since the prices have not been dropped to reflect this I don’t believe. 

As we was leaving ‘in the pouring rain’ a man I assumed was the owner had the nerve to ask if we’d had a good night. I told him about the pubic hair and about the toilet. He asked why I’d said nothing at the time as they was always on site. Well the reception (in which was also housed the restaurant consisting of about 4 small tables) closed about 5 minutes after we arrived and I’d missed the silly bit of paper telling me where to go if I needed help. I went on to ask about the bar and about the lovely rooms and was told I was mistaken, they do not have a bar nor rooms to that standard (I refer you again to the photo’s on here). As it was raining I simply could not be bothered to get my phone out and show him the photos but he suggested I was looking at the wrong website Hmmmm, well I’ve double and treble checked and the building and car park at least are the ones of the hotel we was at. All in all avoid this place it’s not what it professes you be. Oh, and none of the electrical items in the room were PAT tested. Our room would have been complete had there been the white outline of a body in the room.

Stayed for one night booked 6 rooms, 5 of which were doubles / twin rooms and 1 was an  2 bed apartment  that slept 4.  ( Apartments are only meant for min 2 nights but accommodated us) .  Very clean comfy, ample parking.  didn't have breakfast as needed to be on the road early.    would stop again.

We stayed at the start of August after a very late confirmation the team were more than helpful, even though we didn’t check in until 10pm!
My wife joined the member of staffs yoga class the next day and couldn’t fault it!
5* we will look to stay again in the future

Fantastic last minute find

Warm welcome. Very newly refurbished super nice apartment. Warm welcome, super countryside and sunset view from bedroom, great parking. Spotless clean, very good shower, comfy beds . Easy to find. Would recommend. Flexible and accommodated our late arrival.

Stayed for a weekend with children

We booked The Smithaleigh via telephone for accommodation while attending a wedding. All seemed fine and friendly while booking and I dutifully received the terms and conditions via email and provided payment details. On receiving the terms I noted they had omitted my baby daughter from the booking, I called to correct this (I had said I would provide the cot as they do not supply) and was told I would be called back. 
On receiving my call back I was told by a very rude manager that my booking was cancelled due to over occupancy. I explained that I had booked via telephone and explained how many there were in our party, to this I was told I was aggressive and he put the phone down! I called back and he refused to come to the phone stating I was intimidating!! I’ve honestly never had to deal with such an unprofessional, irrational and bizarre hotel or management. There are plenty of brilliant local hotels close to Shilstone House (the wedding venue), I could not recommend enough booking any other hotel on their recommended list without the Bazil Fawlty management 

Rude and obnoxious management 

It's a really comfortable facility as it's close to the city of Plymouth but immersed in the relaxing English countryside. It has a large free parking lot. The room was very large, comfortable, quiet and clean. The gentleman at the reception was very kind and cordial in his approach and he answered our every request. Unfortunately there was no English breakfast, but the continental breakfast was plentiful and good anyway.

Have a good time at The Smithaleigh.

Just a 2 night stay with 2 dogs

Good location (just off the main road) and a friendly welcome. Also appreciated the book swap shelf! Otherwise nice but not brilliant. However, it was cheaper than other places in the area so we felt that the room was good enough value for money. Unfortunately, we couldn't say the same about the breakfast - £6.50 for cereal and toast, £8.50 for a very mediocre cooked breakfast.
