Came here with my partner for 3 nights as a little time away 
Friendly staff and I mean very friendly
Very welcoming and even with the renovations on going it really doesn't bother anyone in the hotel or even people from the outside using it for the bar honestly cannot fault this visit and will recommend it to friends aswell as family 
Breakfast was wonderful not a fault at all  really filling didn't need to eat again till lunchtime

Wonderful stay 

Chose the hotel for its position .read  most of the reviews so was aware there is refurbishing happening .room was clean ( a few marks on carpet and couch,),yes dated and some minor issues such as no curtain at small side window,  No hairdryer ( no issue as I always take my own) irratic water temperature in shower but comfy bed  clean sheets,  nice to have mugs and plenty of tea and coffee .
I do wonder if people read about where they are actually going, its a pub so there will be noise from clientele and for the price what are folk expecting its at least £30-40 
Cheaper than others in the area.
We loved our stay,staff were lovely .,yes couldn't check in until 3 but that is the check in time ! 🙄 no issue leaving car on day of departure so we coukd spend the day in.the local area. 
Would love to return when fully refurbished   bet its going to be a lot more expensive ! 
Jut a warning the pub doesnt serve food apart from breakfast yet .

Ideal position

Rooms were clean but dated first night woken up to the sound of saws hammering drills etc but not notified of this before arrival when I was checking out they were banging on my door at 10.02 wouldn’t stay there again

Finished Offas Dyke and had the unfortunate experience of staying here. Do not be tempted to book this place.
Walls are paper thin, (you hear everything) carpet threadbare, but the worst was the continual racket/loud music till 12 pm  coming from the pub below us.
People downstairs finally packed up at 1 am ! Then a loud intermittent  banging noise throughout the night. Not much use when you’re up at 5.30am to catch a train.
WiFi doesn’t connect. The whole building is in a state of collapse,  absolutely dire.

AVOID AT ALL COST!

This pub has the perfect new owners. Cannot fault its cleanliness and the toilets are super clean and smell so fresh. Even made fresh roasted potatoes for half time in the football. Had a lovely night thank you all wish you well. Will defo return xx

Cleanest friendly pub for night out.

Stayed here a few years ago and it was fine, however returned recently to find it has changed and not for the better.place now looks untidy and unkept,up for sale,and got the impression the owner has given up on the place.also dont stay on a Saturday night as they have very loud kareokee to very late.breakfast is a rushed affair so the cook can leave quickly.not a good experience this time.

Disappointing.

This is a lovely unspoilt pub with a very traditional interior. We've been many times and always found the bar staff to be cheerful and efficient. On this particular occasion there was a chocolate stout on which was simply out of this world - we stayed much longer than intended. The pub has been up for sale for some time and being a sensible adult pub, which is rare in a holiday resort, it deserves to be taken on by someone who will cherish it.

On arrival after our last and very hot day hiking Offas Dyke, we turned up at 1450 hrs to find the place locked and a “For Sale” sign firmly attached to the building. Turns out that booking in from 1500 meant the hotel/ Pub doesn’t even open until that time too. 
When it eventually opened, we were handed our key, told the place locks down at 2300 and if we were out later than that then to use the side door. 
Now for £55 we weren’t expecting the Ritz .. but let’s just say I didn’t want to be walking around with bare feet on the carpet. The light switch seemed to be embedded into the dado rail and the electric cable to the tv was literally an exposed wire that had to be inserted into the back of it.. you knew when it was slipping out because the tv would splutter and it sounded like everyone had the hiccups. 
The room was hot but the road outside was far too noisy to have the windows open. 
Breakfast was basic - cereal, yoghurt, toast, cooked. 
The chap who served breakfast was a very friendly young man who was also very helpful and cheerful. 
The place has SO much potential but it was obvious on talking to the landlord when we booked in, that he had lost interest in the place and had been trying to sell it for 6 years .. 
However like the title says, it served a purpose for two weary travellers who also had to book an extra night 3 days before arrival due to the rail strike.

Just got back from this establishment .... my partners father booked this for a 2 night stay for us to accompany his grandmother to a wedding .... well I don't know where to start, on arriving we where greeted by an overflowing skip in the car park and a very disheartening for sale sign, the entrance hallway to the rooms absolutely stinks, and was filthy, the 1st room we entered thinking it was his grandmother's single room turned out to be our very small dingy double room, which was extremely dated, we daren't put anything in the drawers or hang anything in the dilapidated wardrobe, you couldn't swing a bloody cat in the tiny bathroom, with a washroom size sink (which I could have dealt with without the other issues) his grandmother's room well yes it was a single room with a sink in the actual bedroom which only had one tap working next to her bed and the toilet and shower room the other side within touching distance.  The towels supplied well they were a definite no no, luckily i always take my own with me, It's only saving grace was the fact that the bedding was clean and the breakfast was acceptable.  On checking out of here I was stopped by the cleaning lady and asked and questioned if I had mistakingly packed one of their towels.... how bloody insulting...... i could go on and on ....... never ever again would I stay in this place

If anyone has ever seen the Addams family you'd probably have a good idea as to how this place was, it was just short of a greeting from Lurch on arrival. The smell of dust with a side of extreme disinfectant is one that will remain in your nostrils when you eventually sit down for your first pint. The public style toilet seat is a must see if you manage to squeeze into the bathroom. The light switch is quite the one off to. Its like a wacky science project from the 70s, no doubt where it should of stayed but hey... we may aswell just leave it to add to the fun and games. I don't think I've quite found anywhere as cold as this place. If id have slept naked ontop of a local caravan id of been warmer but also had a good chance to find myself in a local prison cell that would of no doubt been a better option. I opted to sleep in my clothes in fear and strategically moved the Latin worded pillows out of my eye sight (im glad i can't speak latin through fear of what they may say). At night some lunatic started to bang on my door in the middle of the night. I was unsure whether this was Uncle Festa returning from a night on the cherrie or just another quirk of ghoul towers. I left at 5am and unfortunately can't report back about the breakfast. Id have enough surprises for the night and didn't fancy the grand crescendo. Eventually something really bad is inevitable to happen to us all in life, a grievance, a bad accident, a bad turn of events.... itll be at that time someone will say to me... are you sure you are ok?.... how are you coping with it..... and ill reply.... ill tell you how as i stayed in the Halycon Quest hotel, that's how... nothing can phase me any more.
