From the moment my young lurcher and I walked in we were made to feel more welcome than anywhere I've stayed before. The locals helped me with the pup whilst we came in from the rain. Me carrying his bed and overnight bag, the pup doing his best to rip my arm off and get out of the rain!
Dirk the landlord took my bag up and I lost the pup to a friendly bunch for the time it took to sort out the rest of the bits.
Perfect relax in the bar last night with couple of pints on comfy sofas with great music and conversation if you want it but also space to chill if you don't.
Large comfy double room. Huge bathroom (perfect for dog bed). A most excellent breakfast by Dirk this morning.
Post breakfast a mooch along the blue rock trail in the forest was just what we needed and we were on our way..... would definitely stay here agsin. A proper Inn with real people and a fabulously friendly atmosphere.

Overnight stay with dog

Visiting the Forest of Dean for a couple of days we were looking for something simple and here we found exactly what we were looking for.

The locals in the pub made us feel extremely welcome and were encouraging of us to join in with the atmosphere which we were only too happy to be a part of. The pub cat was also a nice thing to have around.  

As mentioned in other reviews the building is quite old but that's not the end of the world. The room was spacious and the bathroom even bigger. All clean and tidy. The only thing I would have like is a stand for the shower head so I could have had a proper shower however the bath was huge. 

The full cooked breakfast was really good - made by someone who actually knows how to cook bacon properly (seriously I can't believe how often that goes wrong) 

The service was extremely friendly from arrival to departure and if we're ever in the neighbourhood again we will gladly pop in or even stay again.

The right fit for us

Heading up to the forest to look for the elusive wild boar we stayed in this wonderful pub for 2 nights and it was a great choice.From the start we were welcomed by the landlord and the regulars and the dogs were made a fuss off too. Absolutely brilliant breakfast which is just what we needed before trapesing around the forest all day and the room was ideal.would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking to visit the area. Oh yeah and with some local advice I was lucky enough to see several Boar before we left

Great place to stay

Once again made to feel very welcome, just one night to attend my aunt's funeral, but comfortable and warm on a winters night.

Will go back in summer when the weather is kinder and enjoy the lovely hospitality.

One night stay

The New Inn is a lovely place! The building's old, so the comments of some folks about creaky floors and doors are accurate. But none of this was a problem to us. We loved the general atmosphere of the inn. The rooms were clean and spacious, the bed very comfortable, and the ability to come and go during the day was a great asset. (Not all B&B-style places allow that.)
The road outside is quiet; and noise from the bar never leaked upstairs, even when there were quite a lot of folks inside, playing darts or whatever. The bar's clientele were friendly and welcoming, willing to talk if you wanted to and willing to leave you alone if that's what you preferred. We got some excellent advice from them about how to find the best places for cycling round the Forest, which has more cycle paths per square mile than any other place I've ever come across.
Best of all was the welcome we got from the host, Dirk -- also from his staff in the bar. Dirk was unfailingly helpful; and the breakfasts in the morning were excellent. Dirk makes a particularly excellent poached egg!

A lovely five-day stay, to mark our 40th anniversary by cycling in the Forest of Dean.

We stayed for four days at the New Inn to visit relatives and tour the forest and loved it.

The locals, Landlord and family could not have been more welcoming and friendly, and knew all my relatives, even pointing me in the right direction to find my Cousin.

Lovely evenings spent chatting to them.

We will definitely be back.

Oh and a smashing breakfast.

Went to this pub for a meal with my parter. Ordered lasagne and steak. No complaints towards the staff. Although, when food was brought out, there was cling film wrapped around my “luxury” lasagne. I tried my best to ignore this, however the meat was exceptionally gristly. If I wanted to order processed meat in plastic, I would have bought myself a pepperami. My partner was also not too pleased, as his “rare” steak was well over cooked and his suspicions were met, as bbq sauce, definitely does not compliment a steak. Will not be returning to this pub.

Poor food

Place is small but the staff and locals are very friendly. Room is creaky but lovely and big with great views. Bathroom is huge but shower is a little disappointing because there is no shower curtain and you have to hold the head yourself. Breakfast was AMAZING!! Best breakfast I've had in a long time. Plenty of coffee, toast and cereal and we were treated like Kings. Beer, pool table, darts and big tv in the bar to relax

Lovely and comfortable

What this pub lacks in kerb appeal, it makes up for in value for money and a friendly welcome.

We stayed for two nights last weekend and our room although a bit dated, was clean and comfortable and had a huge bath with plenty of hot water.

Breakfast was a traditional fry up, tasty ingredients and as much toast as we could eat.

The landlord was very friendly and nothing was too much trouble.

We will be back!

Great value accommodation 

Fantastic stay last night here!  Traditional pub serving real ales and a good helping of 'banter' too ☺ The locals/regulars are welcoming, Dirk the landlord is brilliant; friendly, accommodating (nothing seemed too much) and as you can see from the photos he cooks a mean breakfast too ☺ huge bathroom in our room, large flatscreen TV and clean comfortable bed. Hubby highly recommends the IPA - we'll be back!
