A nice lady welcomed  us. BnB is an 'earner' ...cheap, very basic, old beds, cheap, springy, mattresses, tatty toilets ...couldnt turn around in it ...shower hot. Door locks iffy. No curtains, just blinds ...woken up v early. No biscuits.TV limited channels too! 
If you.re happy with a price of about £75/ night max for 2 ...ok ...and just want a bed it.ll scrape by. Any more costly, dont bother. 

As basic as basic gets ...

Booked here for a last minute trip to York, very reasonably priced and good location. Not stayed in a guest house before. 10 mins walk into the centre, £8 in a taxi. It was my birthday and there was a complimentary bottle of Prosecco in the room which was unexpected but gratefully received - thank you. 

Lots of pros: 
- great location. Literally a 10 min walk into the city centre, really easy to find. 
- Melissa, the host, lovely lady, very welcoming and friendly. 
- Comfy bed with fresh, clean and decent bedding. Same with the towels, no complaints at all. They were soft, cosy and smelt so nice! 
- Tea/coffee facilities with Yorkshire tea
- Lots of mirrors and decent lighting, making getting ready to go out much easier (thank you!) 
- Modern decor and the room was warm, clean and tidy. 

Cons - this is personal as we live in the sticks so not used to noise! 
- you can hear noise from the rooms around you; people making brews, going to the toilet, snoring, people’s alarms going off etc… not ideal if you want a good night’s sleep or if (like me) you’re a light sleeper. 
- Curtains are a bit thin (used to black out curtains) maybe bring an eye mask with you 
- People coming back at all hours, drunk and loud, one couple arguing on the stairs waking us up, and a bloke screaming at people to stop banging. 

All in all we had a good stay here - I would stay again and recommend so if you’re thinking of booking The Beckett, go for it! 
I’d just pack an eye mask which I usually do but forgot this time. 
The only gripe was the noise coming from other rooms but there is nothing the owner can do about that and what do we expect when staying in city centre accommodation when people are out boozing.

Great guest house in an ideal location with super comfy beds!

First the positives - good location to York city centre - warm welcome by host- room looked tidy but dated, when we first opened door to the room we noticed that other doors to other rooms that was left wide 
 open and they were a lot more modern than ours . We stayed in room 5 .  We looked around the room and it looked very old fashioned - with a old dark wood wardrobe and Chester draws - the room has a very small tv on the wall but at least it worked ! . 

We noticed that the bathroom was very small with just a toilet and very small shower,  the sink was in the main room we was staying offering no privacy. Down the side of the shower door I was alarmed to see it was quite dirty ( photo 1 and 2) and also had black stains on the sealant. 
We then decided to put some trainers on top of the wardrobe for storage to save room - I was alarmed when I took them off to see them thick with dust from the top of the wardrobe - not good when I’m asthmatic ( photo 3 )

 We then tried to boil the kettle - please be aware you have to put the kettle on the floor to boil it - as there are no switches higher enough for the kettle - here is where we found one of the most serious safety issue - the socket box was coming away from the wall !!! (photo 4 &5 ) THIS IS NOT SAFE ! - we then opened the wardrobe to hang up our clothes to find there was a large creak when opening it - not good when the walls are paper thin!, we then went to the Chester draws and found one of the handles hanging off and a stain in one of the draws (photos 6&7).We also noted the following, the chair was very old and torn. If you feel the cold please don’t stay here you have no control of the heating - there is a radiator but is only on a few times a day for a hour or 2 not sure as we was that cold we went to bed .

 Please also see the last photo of a very old fashioned hairdryer the side of the sink which was a major safety and the most serious issue as there was a gap in the hairdryer housing which was right by the sink ( electric and water bad mix ! ). 

The bed was also lumpy and uncomfortable - there is a very thin mattress topper in the wardrobe but this had a dodgy looking brown stain on it - the fleece blanket in the wardrobe although in a bag to keep it clean there was a musty smell to it and black stains on it - not too sure if it was mould ?. 

To conclude this review basically even though rooms looked more up to date than ours I do not think the price of the room was worth it as we have stayed in cleaner and rooms with no safety issues for a lot less. If I could leave less than 1 star I would ! 

If money was no object we would not have stayed more than 1 night in this room - we stayed 4

Avoid ! Not as clean and as safe as it looks and not worth the room fee with so many issues in the room

We got a warm, hearty and family feeling greeting.
The usual information combinded with more personel, down to earth chat.
The room isnt big but it works.
The bathroom a bit small but the shower is great.
The guesthouse isnt placed in the centre but not remote.

Family feeling 

Was overcharged but that was probably a genuine oversight.
Host was welcoming, the guest house itself is a bit tired and dated though hsd been recently decorated but not to a great standard.. The ensuite is little more than a cupboard with a shower and toilet, sink is located in the room itself.
Room was clean enough, bed was comfortable.
TV is tiny and set very high on the wall so not easy to see.
Bacon sandwich for breakfast was delicious.
All in all it was a reasonable stay but we have had better for the price

Not brilliant but not bad either

Firstly, yes it is a bit dated but it was clean and 10minute walk to York Minister which at £70 a night on a weekend is pretty good.

Got a nice welcome from the owner. I asked to check in earlier which she obliged to and gave us a parking permit for the street at £5 per night.

I'd stop there again.

Worth the money

The decor might be a bit dated, but it’s clean, comfortable, close to the town centre, and the landlady (Melissa) is fabulous - really lovely, and nothing is too much bother. It’s also great value for money.

Can’t comment on the breakfast, as because of Covid restrictions the dining room isn’t currently in use. You can preorder a breakfast bap to eat in your room, but I chose to eat out instead.

I only stayed for one night, but would most definitely stay again.

Bit dated, but clean and comfortable.

Small but adequate size room. Sink in room as bathroom to small, Electric fan in bathroom was just an ancient housing with no fan, hole to outside, mould on the sealant in shower, electric shower needs upgrading and is not very hot, there doesn’t seem to be an isolator for the shower. Bed old, lumpy and sagging.Carpet worn and frayed by the entrance door, had to put kettle on floor to boil, paint flaking and don’t get me started on the flock wallpaper.

Not worth it

Would not recommend this b&b at £80 a night, the ensuite which consisted of a toilet & shower cubicle was filthy, the sink was in the bedroom, the radiator and skirtings were dirty, the ceiling lights didn't work and there was also a crack and water stain. Breakfast was a sandwich brought to your room. Would I stay there again. NO.

No social distancing at all going on . Lots of people making a mess and drinking outside around the front door, hard to get inside while maintaining social distance . This mess was outside when we returned
