Best Ocean

I totally regret having booked a room in this filthy place. I wish I could get a refund... There was an actual RAT in the kitchen! And the blonde girl at the reception desk (don't know her name, she never introduced herself) is the most unhelpful and bitter staff I have ever encountered. It looks as if she hates her job, so I would strongly recommend her to quit. In addition, the location of the hotel is super inconvenient. Forget about having access to wifi whatsoever, eventhough it is advertised.

The worst hostel within the Hostelling International chain!

After staying in a hostel in San Diego with similar reviews on Trip Advisor  (a 2.5 rating at time of writing) we were somewhat concerned about what was awaiting us at HI Los Angeles South Beach. What we found surprised us in a GOOD way, however! Looking back over the reviews now, I see that almost all of them are very outdated, and perhaps this place has undergone some serious improvements.
We stayed in a private room for two nights, and found it perfect - a beautifully furnished and decorated room that you could easily mistake for a hotel room were it not for the shared bathroom. The bathroom (like the entire building) was dated (in a retro kind of way) but immaculately clean, and they even provide hand towels as an eco-friendly alternative (single use before washing). 
There is an extremely well-equipped kitchen where you can make yourself oats, pancakes, and coffee for breakfast (all included in the price, eggs a small surcharge). The staff and other guests were all friendly and welcoming. There's a park right on the doorstep for families, with the beautiful Korean-American friendship bell and terrific views. Highly recommended as a base for exploring the otherwise expensive LA via the affordable and comfortable 950 silver line bus.

Ignore the negative reviews from several years ago, this place is great!

Amazing views from this hostel. Super friendly staff. Rooms small and basic (as you would expect from a hostel). Nice bathrooms. Nice shared kitchen. Highly recommend. Dorm building are secured with coded doors. Front door coded at night. Free parking, free breakfast. Love this place.

We chose this hostel for the price, because in LA it is hard to find cheap accommodation. The place is very quiet and with good ambiance. The room was quite old and the bathrooms were simply acceptable, but the surroundings are very nice, in front of the Korean Campana de la Amistad. The views are very nice, with the ocean floor and no buildings. The hostel is a kind of old military barracks and that is noticeable, although it has a certain charm. In the central building there is a kitchen with neveras to leave babies and fruit, and some common items that for the desuno are very good, such as coffee, mold pan, peanut cream or jam. But worse, you can find the situation at the three usual places in LA, although it is within walking distance of the shopping area of San Pedro de la Moneda.

Cheap, quiet and somewhat distant.

I stayed here for one night enroute to the airport in Los Angeles.  I booked at the last minute and was able to get a private room.  It was quick and easy to check in and Monica at the front desk was friendly and helpful.  The room was older and small, but clean and comfortable, with a shared bathroom.  There is no AC, but the breeze off the nearby ocean kept the room at a comfortable temperature.  The view from the back porch was gorgeous.  I did not find the cleanliness concerns listed in the other reviews.  The kitchen, dining area and living room were all in excellent condition.   Ingredients to make pancakes were placed out in the morning.  It was a great value for $50 per night for two people for the LA area.

Gorgeous views and friendly hostel

We have stayed in numerous hostels all over the state of California, and have stayed in this hostel previously.  Though booking can be difficult at times, we are usually able to get beds booked in a reasonable amount of time.  Not so with this hostel.  It is nearly impossible to get anyone to reserve a dorm. Promises for information go unfulfilled. Calls do not get returned. It seems as if they are reluctant to sell the beds, which you would think would be their goal.  They are the most unprofessional group of hosts I've ever dealt with. We will never be coming back.

Save yourself the headache and hassle and book a room at one of the many budget hotels in the area. You'll end up in a nicer (private!) room, you can reserve it immediately, rather than chasing these people down for months, it will be cheaper and you'll probably get a free breakfast, too.  

Our previous stay was a normal, uneventful hostel stay, but it's just not worth the headache to deal with returning.  The negative reviews don't surprise me at all.

Possibly the worst run hostel I've ever had the displeasure of dealing with

I only stayed here for two nights in August, and I needed a place that had free parking, so I chose HI because I felt good in San Diego. This is not on the same level, but the cleanliness is fine, and it also has a nice view.

Two nights on the road.

The best thing about this hostel is the location. Although a little far away from Hw No. 1 but beautifully situated with a beautiful view of the Pacific Ocean! The rooms are extremely small - I had got a double room as an individual, but I can hardly imagine how the room should sleep more than two people - but clean and the bathroom was also clean.
