When I think of what makes a great bed and breakfast, there are certain tangible things -- good food, comfortable rooms, etc. -- then there are the intangible things -- the location, the vibe, the magic of the people and place. This place had the magic we were seeking in our long journey out to Cape Breton Island. Terri and Dave share a truly special place. It was a particular delight for our young children to tour their farm and meet the animals. We enjoyed rambling in the paths and fields above their house, picking wild blackberries, and a perfect stargazing evening.

Some things to note: Terri was especially good at engaging our children in the visit, making them feel welcome to play where they should while also setting clear boundaries and ground rules that kept them out of trouble. There are many animals, including a very sociable cat who clearly things he owns the place. We found them delightful, but be prepared for them. The place, as others note, is a bit off the beaten path -- a solid 25 minute or so drive off the Trans-Canada that gradually declines from a paved highway to a gravel road. For us that was part of what makes the place special, but you'll want to make sure you plan accordingly.

Family friendly farm B&B off the beaten path

We had a great time at the Seaweed and Sod Farm. The house feels like a classic country farm house; it is beautifully maintained. Terri and Dave were very accommodating and also (super helpful!) very COVID-19 conscious. We never felt like our space was being intruded upon, and the front rooms/common areas have a lot of privacy, especially right now as Terri is booking guests one group at a time. 

You're quite far from civilization here--about 30 minutes from the gas stations in Bras D'Or and close to 50 minutes from Baddeck (which you can see across the bay). The road coming in turns to a well-packed dirt road about five minutes before you reach the farm. It's very open and there are houses/farms the whole way, so we did not feel like we were heading into the wilderness, but the dirt road is a little bumpy, especially for smaller vehicles.

Terri has really thought through all the things one might need while staying so far from amenities. There is a fridge and a Keurig machine; there are plenty of cups and glasses and things like bottle openers; there are books (including nature guides and books of local history) that will appeal to locals as well as out of province guests. We did notice that the mini-fridge could use a cleaning (even just a wipe down of the inside with a Lysol; there was a trace of what looked like mildew) but this was literally the only issue of cleanliness, and it was minor. As a B&B there is of course no oven or microwave to do your own cooking. The bathroom is gorgeous, and was also--like everything else--spotless. The claw foot tub and the soft lighting made for a very relaxing bath. 

On the note of food: the breakfast here is top-notch. The homemade apple crisp was perfect; Terri's French toast was really nicely done; Dave's eggs and ham were delicious. We needed cutlery/plates for our own food in the evening and had no problem asking Terri to pass some over. I can't say enough about the food. They also do a bottomless (at least to us; we had two full carafes) pot of coffee in the morning. 

For our other meals, we wound up driving to Baddeck and stopping in the (very well-stocked) Co-Op market. Baddeck has a lot of nice restaurants and caters to a significant summer tourist population; we tried Tom's Pizza and loved it. We also initially brought some food from the Sobeys in North Sydney, which is also only about 40 minutes away. 

It takes an hour from the S&S to drive to Sydney, which I would recommend only if you feel like experiencing a small city; otherwise, the remoteness and beauty of the S&S is its real charm. 

One thing I'll note is that the farm dog Fauna is very sweet but also very large, and while she is perfectly docile (in fact she was wary of me and kept her distance) she might intimidate a small adult. The cats are chill and Ralphie in particular is a treasure. If you're allergic to cats, this might not be the place for you, as Ralphie and Millie (the two indoor cats) are FRIENDLY. We met three of the four "barn cats" because they follow the dog around and love to say hello whenever you go outside. 

I mean it when I say that my partner and I will likely visit again.

Gorgeous Views and Good Breakfast!

Lovely farmhouse accommodations, serenely decorated without fuss and frills. The 2 upstairs rooms share a large bathroom and are perfect for friends or families travelling together. Downstairs is a small sitting room as well as the dining room where breakfast is served. It was delicious and accommodated 1 in our group who was lactose intolerant.

Terri was a friendly host and she and her husband managed to work with all the COVID restrictions required - but I think  the experience would be even better for hosts and guests once the pandemic restrictions are no longer needed! We only stayed one night as were were there to attend a family event nearby but would highly recommend this place also for anyone looking for a few days quiet break or as a base to explore nearby.

Quiet welcoming farmhouse accommodation with serene atmosphere.

Terri is a terrific host. We spent a week at her B&B as a family with a 6 year old and a 1 year old. Checking out the farm animals was the highlight of our kids. The breakfast is amazing, and the rooms are lovely (in an old heritage house). We got surprised by a snow storm and couldn't leave for a day (since the road wasn't plowed yet). Terri made us even a lovely dinner. The rooms are nice. One had a great view of the bay. It is very quite. We had a great time. Much recommended.

March break in Cape Breton

A little off the beaten track, this farm is a delightful destination. We arrived at sunset, a special treat viewed from the property. The rooms were comfortable, very much part of the farmhouse. In the morning we were greeted by the turkeys, guinea fowl, chickens, llamas, horses, cats, dogs, etc. who live on the farm. Breakfast was delicious and nutritious shared together at that family table and accompanied by interesting conversation. Thanks Terri, Tom and Helen. Our time with you was memorable!

A Gem on Cape Breton Island

Five stars aren't enough!!!! Was there a week ago for three relaxing comfortable nights. My mother & I felt like welcomed friends the minute the door opened. Yummy food...especially the world famous Sunday waffles....shared with our hosts. Friendly dogs & cats....delightful & interesting barnyard menagerie. Great recommendations for things to see & delicious food. Terri & Dave made Cape Breton one of the best parts of our 16 day East Coast adventure. And...I'll be back!!!!!

East Coast Hospitality at It's Finest

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit! If you get there early enough, ask to see the animals. As animal lovers, this totally made the experience. Bed was comfortable and the evening was nice and quiet. Will recommend to others

Lovely stay on charming farm home

The house was very nice and we really liked the room. The colours in the room were very pretty and the decorations were well chosen. It was a very appealing and comfortable room. The bed was very comfortable and had very nice bedding. We knew going in that it was a shared bathroom, but did not know about the shortage of water. I had a quick, less-than-ten-minute shower, and ran out of water. As a B & B, and especially one with a shared bathroom where many people will be using the shower each morning, I feel that you need to make sure that there is enough water for everyone to have a leisurely shower if they should feel so inclined. Breakfast was delicious and included a very yummy fruit salad. It is a shared breakfast table where you eat with the people from the other room, Terri and her husband, and two other people (to whom we were not introduced). I like this classic "B&B vibe." One of the reasons why we picked this B & B was the fact that it was a farm with animals, and we wanted to get a chance to see the animals. Unfortunately, there is a $15 charge for a farm tour. This rubbed us the wrong way, as I think farm aspect is part of the charm of this B and B and should be included with the price of the room. To have to pay an additional $15 to see a few animals seems ridiculous and like they are just "nickel and diming" you. The owner tried to be friendly but was at times a bit abrasive. Overall, our stay was decent.

Nice room, but don't expect to get to see the animals

We were visiting my sister and her family, who live in the area. Coming from the Boston area, we were amazed at how instantly relaxed we felt upon settling in at Terri and Dave’s farm! It literally felt like we had stepped off a carnival ride and into a completely different time; a time when life rolled along at a quieter, gentler, much more sane pace!

As almost all the other reviewers mentioned, the hosts Terri and Dave were so welcoming and treated us like family! The breakfast fare was delicious and plentiful. All the dogs and cats were so friendly and fun. The inn is comfortable and decorated brilliantly. It is homespun yet sophisticated. Terri’s beautiful photos grace the walls along with the country decor that rivals Joanna Gaines’ impeccable style. And the farm itself was so quaint and serene. I felt like we’d stepped back in time and I really longed to linger.

We loved our visit and hope to return again soon!!

Felt like we stepped back in time, in a good way!!

This is a working farm, a typical farmhouse with Narragansett turkeys, llamas, dogs cats and more, a very relaxed country style B&B.  Only suggestion is EAT FIRST in town or bring your snacks - its a good half hr drive back and forth along the lake. Terri and Dave are great hosts, breakfast was delicious (waffles with fruit, yogurt, bacon, etc), loved the animals, and our room was quiet and so very comfortable.  I'd go back, but plan for dinner first at the Cedar House Bakery and Restaurant in Boularderie, NS & arrive early enough to appreciate the farm.
