DO NOT BOOK. The owner Richard was extremely disrespectful and intrusive. He charged us for more nights than we stayed and then when confronted about it, he lied stating that we had caused property damage. Completely unacceptable for an owner to act like this. Not a very welcoming and or comfortable place to stay unless you like random animal bones around the house, clumps of mold in the fridge and bathroom, and a lying owner with abrasive staff. Ruined our family trip.

DO NOT BOOK THIS LODGE - SHADY

Stay away from the Bowering Lodge.  When we arrived we found rat feces on a table, and vomit on the toilet.  The apartment was full of insects, wasps and bees.  The owner Richard is the worst, he made racist and derogatory remarks against us, and poured a bucket of water on our campfire, and told us to go to bed and it was only 10:30 pm, when we weren't bothering anyone.  Richard tries to take advantage of university students by taking their hard earned money under false pretenses. Owner Richard creepily stalks you.  Pictures don't lie Richard, even if you do.

Loved this place!
This is a hidden gem! Everything about it was perfect. The bed was so comfy, the bathroom was clean and updated, TV was flat screen and new. Staff were lovely and knowledgeable, room was modern and clean, decor was awesome. It was quiet and so affordable. The location was right in the middle of everything. So many restaurants, attractions. Lots of parking too. We definitely will come back here. We brought our food and they were very accommodating for barbecue and there were some great spots around fresh fruits and vegetables.I will go back again and again.owner is very friendly.try please to go there you will love it

Home away from home

We have discovered the Bowering Lodge 14 years ago and have fallen in love with it, coming back every year since then. Richard is the best and most welcoming host ever and a great inspiration to be around, with many stories to amaze you. Coming to the Bowering Lodge feels like coming home. It's a magnificent and magical place in and out, with many great activities to enjoy year round: which for us included cozy gatherings around the fireplace, snowshoe walks in the surrounding forest, where every tree is special and was lovingly planted by the owner himself, special moment around campfire with cricket orchestras under the starry skies, waking up to be greeted by a choir of songbirds, sunbathing on a lovely spacious patio with comfy padded armchairs, barefoot walks on the grass field near the a pond with goldfish, bringing heartwarming memories from summers at grandparents' farms in the childhood, relaxing on a swing and hammock in a pagoda and much more. We really look forward to our future visits, with plans of taking stand up paddling board and kayaking lessons from Richard, who is also a great instructor offering a diversity of outdoor adventures with many activities to choose from and enjoy as an add on to your visit.
There are also lots of great activities to enjoy in the surrounding areas a short drive from the guesthouse - hiking to scenic lookouts and waterfalls, paddling, swimming, skiing and much much more.

Spectacular Place

Stayed here for a night with my boyfriend as a nice getaway and ended up booking to stay a second night because we were having so much fun. Richard was very knowledgable about activities and spots in the surrounding area and gave us some great local recommendations! Lovely host, very accommodating and he replied to any requests promptly and kindly. The kitchen was pleasant and the room was spacious and clean. My boyfriend and I ended up having a few drinks and wanting to go into town the second night, he provided a shuttle option which helped us out a lot compared to cabs out there. Highly recommend this if you’re looking for some refreshing views and awesome hospitality!

Great scenery & hospitality!

Good, clean, comfortable. Had a great time with my friends. The place was charming. Like visiting a sweet uncle. Dark paneling. Surrounded by forest... the perfect get away. Heated bed was a treat. My room had a nice big window.  Hope to go again.

Bowering Guest House

My friend and I booked a one night stay at this ‘lodge’ and contacted the owner Richard and requested to cancel our reservation because there is a huge snow storm that is supposed to hit Toronto tomorrow. We apologized for the inconvenience and explained that we’re both young, inexperienced drivers and we both don’t feel safe enough driving that long of a distance in inclement weather. The owner Richard sent a long condescending email telling us to get snow tires ( which we already have) and that the roads are ‘maintained’ and that he still expected to see us- just as a parent would condescend their child. He cared little about our safety making the drive and wouldn’t even consider offering us a credit for a future stay! We’re both young students who saved for this trip and are super disappointed with the lack of customer service- especially for a small business owner. Richard was rude, indignant that we were cancelling and showed zero understanding or empathy considering he’s basically renting out rooms in a house with little to no separation or privacy. Save your money and book a hotel instead where they will take your concerns seriously!!! STAY FAR AWAY!

STAY FAR AWAY- OWNER IS TERRIBLE

I do not recommend the Bowering Lodge for accommodations for the following reasons: 
- The property felt awkward, the parking was not planned and you had to make sure you didn’t block the numerous other cars.
- The water dispenser tap broke the second we tried to use it, I am not convinced it wasn’t already broken, so we had to buy our own drinking water. 
- The elderly owner questioned the times we’d be returning to the property. It was odd, it felt like we had a curfew. We were barley in the room during our stay since we were mostly at family events. 
- The weirdest part was that our room was connected to the room beside it. Anyone could access each others room at any time! It did not feel safe at all. It made me question even more his reasoning for asking when we would return to the room. 
- We could not keep the AC cold enough. We kept it off when we were not in the room as a courtesy because he had a tube that filled a bin with water and it needed to be emptied. Because of that it was always hot when we returned to the room to sleep. It was also very poorly placed beside the bed, and blew straight at our heads all night. It was extremely loud and made it difficult to sleep, which was really all we needed this room for.
- The shower had weak water pressure and was difficult to wash off soap. 
- When we checked out we told them about the broken water tap and we were told it wasn’t a problem. A few days later I got a $30 charge on my visa! Not only did we have to buy our own water, they charged us for their broken machine. I actually would have paid the fee if it was discussed properly at the time, instead of a shady charge after the fact without even telling us. Be carful who you give your credit information to!
Pay the extra money and stay in a real hotel!

The owner is focused on continuous improvement projects (accommodations and services, including renting various types of equipment). I went back to this guest house, stayed for the week-end and rented a high-end road bike. The house ’s location is a short distance from Thornbury (Georgian trail passes through this town). It was an overall nice experience.

Follow-up on Bowering Lodge/Guest House

Almost impossible to find without help not sat nav friendly! Arrived to find no one in after 1/2 an hour found note telling me Richard not home until 8pm. Our room was left at the top of the stairs the bathroom was along the passage. The room was quite small and cluttered. We decided to sit and wait in the car. After about an hour and a half a car arrived containing 4 adults and 5 children, one a few months old. Richard arrived about 7.30 but could not understand our anguish at the lack of bathrooms with so many people. I explained that we picked the Bowering for some peace and quiet. With 5 Children under the age of 10 ish in close proximity this was not going to happen. As there was a lot of clutter and rubbish laying around we decided to leave! Richard has charged us the full price for 3 nights! ,I suspect other people have  done the same as usI believe there are only 3 bedrooms .I would be very wary about booking this guest house when you get there you might  not get what you think you are going to get. Richard does not respond to any complaint
