Dalvay

Beautiful old hotel with multiple fireplaces and wood paneling. Everything updated. Had a very nice room on the second floor. Restaurant was excellent. Had the best seafood chowder of our 10-day trip through New Brunswick, PEI and Nova Scotia. Situated on a large piece of land with no nearby houses. Large grass lawn on approach and an adjacent lake. Nearby beach walks. Several towns with good restaurants and activities, including the Anne of Green Gables house, to the West.

Classic PEI -- a beautiful, old hotel.

The staff at this property are truly outstanding. They are incredible hosts, their customer service is phenomenal. From check in to dining to drinks in the Library, everything is perfect. They ensure you are comfortable, completely taken care of and happy with your stay and meals. I can't wait to return next year ! 

Magical stay

Our drive along the road took us past the Dalvay, so we were curious and stayed for the night.
The inn is classic and full of ambiance. We found, at the end of the season,  wood fires in several sitting areas.  That was very welcome to gather around to make new friends and warm-up.
The staff was more than helpful and shared stories about the inn and area.
We didn't see an elevator, so steps are a bit hard if you have a handicap, or are traveling with someone who is.

Dalvay By The Sea visit

This inn was built in the 1800s, not I'm not sure what some people expect... but what they can expect based on my experience is a wonderful couple nights stay in a cozy room and smell of wood burning fireplaces.  This is an old building thats only 3 floors and very cozy feel to it. There are no tvs, no modern gadgets that would take you away from enjoying this historic building.  If you want a coffee maker and a microwave in a room, there is a holiday inn express somewhere on the island.  I very much enjoyed the stay at this place, the food is great, the staff is wonderful and the tranquil atmosphere inside and outside is special.  Not many places out there you can enjoy a coffee in the main lounge by the fire place in the morning or nice glass of wine at night while enjoying a nice conversation with strangers by the fireplace.  Very relaxed place.

We were so disappointed with the hotel.
It is tired and needs to be upgraded.  There is no tv, telephone or radio in the room.  
Space AC units on the floor take up so much room .  There is no central AC.
We stayed 2 nights and the morning we left we saw and killed a Vick roach in our bathroom.  When we checked out, we informed the woman behind front desk asking her to please inform management.
They did not appear to think this was a big deal.  
The only good thing I can say about the hotel is the restaurant is lovely and serves delicious food. Enjoy a meal here but do not waste your money on a pricey room that.  


Stay away from Dalvay

We had booked a “cozy” double room at Dalvay by the sea for five nights. Our stay at the hotel was going to be the centre piece of our holiday to PEI and Nova Scotia that we had been looking forward to for several months. We arrived at 8pm and checked in. The receptionist showed us a sign that explained that because of Covid restrictions, rooms would not be cleaned on a daily basis and that this facility had to be requested. Also guests were to vacate their room by 10am and that that all personal items were to be removed from surfaces beforehand so that cleaning could be carried out. Somewhat perturbed we insisted that we wanted our room to be cleaned daily and that the towels/linens were to be replaced. We were then taken to our room on the second floor. As we left the grandeur of the reception area and lounges it became apparent just how tired the other areas of the hotel were. The room we had been allocated was horrible. It was small and poky with not enough space even for a second bedside table and lamp. When the door was opened we were greeted with a view of an ugly portable A/C unit plugged into a wall with its hose inserted into the outside window frame. Above it was an exposed length of pipe with a sprinkler plumbed in. The extractor fan in the bathroom rattled away loudly whenever it was switched on. We immediately raised our concerns with the receptionist and asked to change rooms. She said that this would need approval from her manager who was not on site. Instead, she suggested that we meet with him at 9am the next morning so that our concerns could be resolved. We agreed to this. We ate in the restaurant. The food was mediocre and overpriced. Our server, who was friendly and enthusiastic, did not really know what she was supposed to be doing. Again, the absence of any manager to oversee operations was becoming apparent.

The next morning we reported for breakfast. The food on offer, presented as a buffet style, literally looked grey and unappetising. The melon looked like it had been hacked to pieces with a bread knife. Some of the bakery products were stale. A group of other guests were huddled over a domestic four slot toaster patiently waiting to toast their bread. This woeful experience was the final straw for us. We reported back to reception at 9am and asked to speak to a senior manager. No one was on site despite assurances to the contrary from the receptionist we had spoken to on our arrival the previous evening.  Nette, the morning receptionist on duty, listened patiently to our concerns and was very apologetic. She explained that there was nothing she could do in the absence of a senior manager. We insisted that she rang her manager. Within minutes of this call, the hotel agreed to cancel our booking and to refund the first night stay; 225 CAD + tax. On receipt of this information we could not leave fast enough.

Dalvay by the sea clearly has staffing issues. It hides behind “Covid restrictions” to mask the fact that it is either trying to cut cleaning costs and/or it does not have sufficient staff to perform this duty. We later found out that hotels and other hospitality venues registered with PEI tourism have a responsibility to ensure that rooms are cleaned and that towels and linens are replaced on a daily basis unless guests request otherwise. This is a basic health and safety requirement. The absence of senior members of staff throughout our stay at the hotel indicates an establishment in decline where complaints from guests have to be taken instead by junior members of staff some of whom no doubt are employed on a casual basis without proper supervision/training. We felt sorry for Nette the receptionist and told her it was not her fault and that she should not personally apologize for our unsatisfactory experience.  The fault lies with the owners and senior managers of this hotel who are selling a product that is vastly overpriced given the poor quality of accommodation and mediocre service we experienced. It is no wonder that they are not visible to account for their indefensible actions/decisions.

The food at Dalvay was some of the best food I have ever had .I’ve travelled all over the world and the Chefs at Dalvay by the Sea are absolutely amazing. My dinning experience was definitely all 5 star meals. The breakfast was outstanding and a great start to a day of sight seeing !
The staff are friendly and for a one of a kind experience Dalvay by the Sea is at the top of the list. The old mansion offers a wonderful old world charm . The grounds are beautifully maintained . All said this is one of the best places , if not the best place to visit and be pampered and treated to gourmet meals of the highest quality in the Maritimes.

Best food and ambience I’ve had in the Maritimes!!

People are attracted to this hotel due to its history and an overnight stay by a royal couple. The inside of the hotel is still kept in good condition despite all these years. The rustic looks and the warmth from the wood burning fireplace are very charming. The room is spacious but no Tv or fridge. It’s a bit tricky to take a shower inside the small bathtub. The staff are friendly and helpful. You could rent a bike and head all the way to the Brackley beach.

We celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary dinner at the resort. WOW!
As islanders we are very familiar with the many restaurants in PEI and we rate the dining room at the Dalvay as the best on the island.
From the moment we arrived until the delicious espresso coffee we were absolutely pampered by everyone. Will Murphy served us our drinks and dinner impeccably.
The quality of the dishes was second to none and what impressed us most is that this restaurant offers superb food at reasonable prices including from the extensive wine list. How refreshing! We want to thank the chef and his brigade for preparing these wonderful dishes.
We will always think of this very special evening with fond memories and plan to come back for future visits.

Fantastic Anniversary Dinner

The Hotel Manager David MacDonald went ABOVE & BEYOND.. Amazing customer service with a smile.. The Chef cooked SUCH delicious food every day.. The location right next to the beach was wonderful.

The history of the property is incredible and all the staff so friendly and nice.

We will be back!
