The Colonel’s Inn is simply stunning, being one of the prettiest and most imposing of the classic stone-built houses so common in Prescott. 

All but one of the inn’s bedrooms on the second floor of the main house are particularly charming, each having an old world appeal with lovely antiques on display. It is true that most of these good-sized and very attractive bedrooms share just one common bathroom at the end of a long hall, and this could be a consideration for older guests who know they may be getting up a time or two during the night.

I admit to some dismay when, after walking past the open doors of these aforementioned spacious and handsomely furnished bedrooms, my husband and I were then shown into Sarah's Suite, called the Comfort Double Room With Balcony on the booking.com website. What happened?! It was as if we had left one house and entered an entirely different one.

Sarah's Suite, accessed by a lockable door from the main hall, consists of a very short, naked hallway with three doors opening from it into the three tiny rooms that are considered part of the suite. One door leads to a small, private powder room; one, kept closed at this time of year, to an enclosed, unheated porch which is, quite possibly, very nice in warm months, but this was January; and the third to a closet-like bedroom, the tiny size of which propelled my claustrophobic self into immediate anxiety mode. 

Four distressingly empty picture hooks on the west wall contributed to my initial dismay.    As soon as I could I stopped at the thrift store in Brockville to find and purchase four second-hand pictures to hide those empty hooks. That done, I felt a little better.

Sarah’s queen-sized bed, the head of which was against the room’s south wall during our visit, is squeezed into a space that leaves not quite a yard on one side, a little over twelve inches on the other (I measured), and just enough space at the foot to allow the door to open. On the plus side, I found this bed to be very comfortable, firm, like I like a bed to be. 

However, if this room is to be let to guests, I would suggest that it be made available only to singles, not couples. A twin bed could reasonably fit in the space available, with enough room remaining to allow for a table or dresser or, at the very least, a folding suitcase rack.

An irregular alcove allows for placement of a tiny chifferobe, on top of which, by necessity, is set the tv. There is no place in the bedroom to put purse or suitcases, so we set ours on the floor in the hallway. In order for me to sleep (I’m just claustrophobic enough to make such a tight space a potential nightmare) we had to leave the door into the hallway open at night.

To conclude, I would definitely recommend the Colonel's Inn in general, if not Sarah’s Suite in particular. The inn is so pretty, and in its Christmas finery, which was still on display during our stay, the parlor and dining room were absolutely lovely. 

The breakfast is tasty and the coffee unlimited. Mike is an attentive host (his wife was away for the winter holidays while we were there, so we did not meet her), and just by coincidence one of our co-guests was the Brampton Batman, which was fun. (You have not quite lived until, without advance warning, Batman steps into the dining room in full regalia and calmly says good morning.)

I would be delighted to stay at the Colonel’s Inn again, but I think that if there is a next time, I will book the room called the Colonel’s Suite (referred to as the Executive King Suite on booking.com). The colonel’s quarters’ en suite bathroom would make middle-of-the-night trips down the main hall unnecessary, and claustrophobia would definitely not be an issue!  (I know, because I snuck into this spacious suite for a peek; in my defense, at the time the it was un-let and unoccupied.)

Weekend of January 14, 2019:  Sarah's Suite

What a lovely stay, we're on our second day of three and I've had enough to write a review. Gerhart is a welcoming and supportive host. The house is gorgeous. Full of little attention to guests. The Colonel's suite is spacious, the bed was very comfortable. A real  bath linen  to wipe off after showering! And what about lunch four servings with fresh local fruits!!! I warmly and strongly recommend it.

The place oozes with old fashioned charm, but has all the modern amenities: charging stations, flat screen TV, rain shower, Wifi, parking, heated pool, air conditioning.  The delightful hosts are friendly and helpful. Delicious breakfast. Comfortable bed, well-appointed bathroom.

Perfect place to stay to go the St Lawrence Shakespeare Festival

The property is gorgeous, the location is great, and the breakfast is delicious! This was a family vacation with kids and grandkids.  The outdoor pool was being painted and filled but, no problem, we went to the public pool by the beach and the grandkids had a great time.  Next time, we'll experience it with the pool.

A relaxing getaway

Sleeping in this lovely and cosy old house is like a journey through time. There are so many details to discover and our room was really comfortable. Chatting with the host and learning about the past was a pleasure. But what we enjoyed the most was definitely the breakfast. Creative and absolutly delicious. We can totally recommend this experience.

Insiders' Tip

We spent the night in this beautiful bed and breakfast, decorated in the 1910s. The reception is warm and friendly. The room was impeccable. As for breakfast, it was more of a really delicious brunch! I highly recommend it.

This B & B is in a 19th-century house. Perfectly renovated but keeps its old charm. The owners are great, breakfast was way better than expected. A really great place for a few days to spend . . . .
The room was a little too small but the owner's kindness made up for it . . .

Old charm and a great service

Great place to stay while in Prescott. The loft is amazing and the whole building is lovely. Breakfast was tasty and varied. The town has some really lovely buildings and is well worth exploring. The Turkish restaurant was also great. :)

We stayed at Mike's house with two kids, the house is beautiful, the rooms are all different and very cozy, the breakfast is just fantastic, just around the corner from Fort Wellington, a must-have.

Beautiful house with great landlords

My wife and I stayed at The Colonel's Inn recently and loved it very much.  Our hosts are very nice people who gave us helpful ideas for touring and restaurants.  The breakfast meals were delicious and the swimming pool was relaxing and refreshing after a hot July day.  I highly recommend this B & B if you are anywhere near Prescott, Ontario.
