Smiths Cove

As a family of 4 (2 adults, 2 young kids), we throughly enjoyed this place.  The views are hands-down breath taking!  We stayed for 4 nights in one of the 1- bedroom suites (1 double bed in the bedroom + 1 double bed in the living room) and it was perfect for us.  The accommodations are rustic - think clean cottage!  The place was well stocked to do our own cooking and lots of space to unpack.  Bathroom was also nicely kept.  It's not fancy, but it's taken care of.  

We found the week-end was a little noisy with some neighbours there to have a good time, but it was a long week-end so we didn't mind.  

The week-day was very, very quiet and we were able to view seals and dolphins in the the bay while BBQing and enjoying picnic dinners.  Such a nice spot for beach combing and not far from grocery stores or restaurants.  

The laundry was a little difficult to co-ordinate to use (it's also used by housekeeping), but we made it work.  The pool was nice.  

Worth it for the views alone!

Unfortunately the view and the food was all that was great about this spot. I booked a small cabin  for a few days. The first impression was a flash back to the 70's.
The first day was a warm one and I put the air conditioning on. Didn't work. It was very old. I thought I would open the window. Old wooden sash windows with no proper screens. Old uncomfortable chairs which should be turfed out. Frost which filled the freezer made it unusable. Still using old gross bed spreads which unless washed for every visitor are very unsanitary.
It is a real shame that money hasn't been spent to update and repair this very dated Inn, as this is a beautiful spot.

Great view

This lovely property has such potential. The seaside location with incredible views is probably one of the best properties in the area. Unfortunately, the motel units are very outdated, musty smelling and unpleasant. The inside of the doors are warped and water stained. The sheets are paper thin and the heating unit is so loud it makes sleeping difficult. There needs to be a major renovation here. 
The restaurant , however, is lovely with an amazing menu, decor and staff. We enjoyed a delicious dinner and breakfast there. 
The pool is very clean with a beautiful surrounding pergola. 
I hope the owners can do the necessary updates to bring this property up to its full potential.

Such a beautiful setting, but needs updates

The room was filthy. It was not properly clean as there windowsills were dirty and covered in dead bugs. Dead bugs under the sink, so floor was not properly cleaned. The sink needed to be cleaned around the grout. The toilet needed to be cleaned and the toilet paper hanger was completely empty. There were no glasses in the room. The place is rundown but more importantly, it was not clean. I would never recommend this place.

We enjoyed a peaceful three night stay-cation in Cabin 6 at the Villages of Mountain Gap. Arriving holiday Monday and departing Thursday - Smiths Cove was a picturesque spot for our home base and South West Nova explorations. 
The Cabin was much larger than the pictures online led us to believe - the only improvements we could suggest would be the addition of a dresser to put clothes in or a suitcase on, and a larger fridge to accommodate longer stays. The AC was a hero as it was really hot even on the coast that week - and was loud! But not unbearable. If the cottages are to remain with the new ownership, mini split heat pumps would make them perfect. Either way, we would not hesitate to come back. We were able to relax in comfort in the very nice queen bed, and a little love seat sofa was perfect for a snack and the hockey game once we'd finished with the porch for the night. 

We also appreciated the pool and the ice from the front desk. Staff were attentive and kind, and really making the best of the season they have left. The Villages of Mountain Gap are certainly worth a look if you're looking to "get away" and stay close to home.

Beautiful NS Staycation

We last stayed here about 20 years ago. This year with all the COVID stuff going on we decided to stay within our own province for the most part and figured why not take the opportunity to return. 

It was a good as I remembered. Not the same, but still a great experience. 

We booked a one bedroom cabin. It had a table, small kitchen area and all the required amenities. The view was incredible. Morning coffee in the deck was lovely.

There’s firepit areas, a pool and of course the beach - more of an exploring beach than a swimming beach.

It’s a work in progress from what we could see. They appear to be doing lots of work on the property. 

I would come back here no question.



As Good As I Remembered

In 1988, I visited this property as part of an orientation for tourist bureau employees throughout the Annapolis Valley. I'd always hoped to get back and actually stay there, but it never worked out. This time, my fiance had an extra day off work for the civic holiday, so I called them, and they availability for the Sunday nite. Booked it in a hurry. We had a free standing cabin overlooking the water, and it was great. At first glance from the outside it looks small, but inside, was lovely and had all we needed......It was ready to check in 1/2 hour before the appointed time so we checked in, then took an hour long walk on the beach, and we were the only ones there. A gorgeous view of Digby and where the Digby/St. John, NB boat comes into the Digby gut. We walked up to the basketball court, threw a few balls, and  walked up the hill to the chapel, what an amazing place with a great view to host a small wedding. I would certainly consider it if having a small ceremony of 50 or less........The swimming pool is lovely, a child's play house, and so much more. Staff was very friendly, and we thoroughly enjoyed our short but sweet stay. We will definitely be back!

It certainly lived up to all our expectations, and beyond!

I have repeatedly tried this place, since its bankruptcy and re-opening.  As it is in my local community of Smiths Cove.
'Yes', the new owners have poured an immense amount of money into getting this place restored to something verging on normalcy.  But it is truly difficult to rate the decor, the pub food, or the surrounding amenities as much other than 'motel basic'.  There is just nothing to rave about.  And not least the gouging pricing, as if this truly were some kind of 'resort'.
There are many other local options available, both in Smiths Cove as well as nearby Digby.  Either for a stay-over, or particularly for dining.  But the Mountain Gap trades on its history rather than its present, and should be avoided by all but the impressible hillbilly.

Much better on offer elsewhere

We had to spend a night in Digby, before boarding the ferry. We booked  arbitrarily, without expectation. It was a wonderful surprise. The family suite we reserved was spacious and comfortable. (Accept some deficiency in the bedroom, the furnishing of which was too spartan. We missed night cabinets beside the bed).  The living room and kitchenett were excellent. We stayed in the room for dinner, and enjoyed every minute.

The main asset of the resort is the view. There are two doors to suite, opening to two porches with magnificent view of sea and land. The sunset was hilarious! (Photo enclosed). It seems a wonderful place to spend several days. I would have given it the full 5 stars if the bedroom had been well furnished.
