I booked through a well-known international hotel-booking website.  

When I arrived (tired and desperate for bed) on the night I'd booked, the owner said there was no record of my booking.  When I showed her the booking, she said, "Oh, right, it's from one of those English sites.  I can't read or speak English, so when I get those bookings, I just don't read them.  That must be what happened here.  There is an agent who checks our English bookings too, and lets me know about them, but she usually forgets. Haha." 

She did manage to find an apartment owned by a friend where I could stay for the first night, and then put me in one of her own apartments for the other 13 nights of my 14-night booking, but that availability was down to pure luck.  As a tired and fed-up traveller, the last thing I wanted was to be dragged across town to an apartment I hadn't booked, but there you go.  

The room was fine - it was the same as the ones at Beijing Xinxiang Yayuan, as it's in the same building.  It was large - 70sq m - with a washing machine, a living area and a big double bed.  

A romantic couple had stayed there before me.  When the bed collapsed and I had to rebuild it, I discovered the remnants of their romantic stay under the bed - a load of fake rose petals and some wads of crispy, yellowing stuck-together tissues.  mmmm.

I went away for one night on a business trip.  When I got back, it was dark and warm.  It turned out that the owner had forgotten to pay the electricity bill.  It took an hour to get it running again.  I had to throw out the food in the fridge and freezer.  

If you can tolerate incompetence, and if you speak good Chinese, this isn't a terrible place to stay.  The room is big and the location is good.  

But do not book it through an international website.  The booking will not work.
