It was our last night in Costa Rica after a very busy day at the Poás volcano and before we left the San Jose airport, which allows us to avoid traffic jams. This place is simply fabulous. It combines modern architecture with quality stone and wood materials. Its library space, playroom or restaurant room offer privileged cocooning moments that we particularly enjoyed. Our very spacious room had an ultra-comfortable bedding, as well as a balcony and a bathroom on a beautiful bay where the most beautiful birds bouncing!

I found this quaint place up on a mountain through a good friend of mine that has stayed here before. I wanted to surprise my wife for our anniversary this year with a trip we wouldn't forget. Well, Matt(the operator) and his people gave me exactly what I was looking for. Matt arranged for us to have a driver/tour guide for the 4 days we would be in C.R. the guide (Fransisco) picked us up from the airport and drove us up to the lodge. Along the way he gave us some history and took us to a few shops along the way . The direct way there from the airport is about 45min-1 hour, depending on traffic. When we arrived, we were shown our room and given a short tour of the lodge. We were greeted with and AMAZING view of San Jose and Alajuela. You're literally ABOVE some of the clouds! The fie and I took a short walk up the road to the restaurant/bar that sits about 200ft from the lodge. We had some drinks, food and we went back to the lodge for the night. The next morning, Matt made us delicious pancakes as requested, and it was planned that we would travel to the west coast and stay the night there and experience what C.R. had to offer along the way. Fran gave us more history and took us to see a few things "off the beaten path". The next day, Fran promptly picked us up as planned and took us back to the lodge. Along the way we stopped for food, drinks and an ATV excursion. Back at the lodge, Matt prepared a great dinnerand drinks for us. We came back to a clean room and once again, spent the night in AWE of the view. In the morning Matt, prepared a more, local breakfast that was delicious as well. Fransisco took us back to the airport, again making stops to checkout a few places that he recommended and got us back to the airport in plenty of time as we were not rushing to leave Costa Rica. We look forward to going back to the lodge in the winter!

An anniversary that we will never forget!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here after twice postponing our vacation due to the pandemic. The lodge is situated on the mountainside and has a sweeping view of the valley below, from the main dining area and from all of the rooms (which were very comfortable and clean). Matt, the owner, was a wonderful host who made us feel very welcome and took excellent care of us. He is not currently operating the restaurant, but there are lots of good options nearby. He spoiled us with pastries and coffee before our morning trek to the volcano, and then a full breakfast (delicious!) after our return. We would have happily stayed another night to allow us to explore the surrounding area, but we had a long drive ahead to the coast. We'll have to save that for our next visit. Cozy Lodge perched near Volcan Poas

My wife and I stayed here for one night in mid February. After arriving in San Jose we rented a car and drove about an hour to get to the lodge. We wanted to be able to get to Poas Volcano National Park early the next morning, and then head north to La Paz Waterfall Gardens and La Fortuna.

This property owned by American expats Matt and Leah is unassuming from the road and looks rustic - in a good way. At road level is the bar/lounge/restaurant area that is open only to guests. The rooms are beneath the main floor area on a lower level on the impressive hillside. Our huge room had a king bed as well as an another bed - so good for families. Firm and comfortable mattress. Nice seating area by the windows with sweeping views over the Central Valley. The night time lights of San Jose were spectacular - all the rooms have the view over fields and pasture. The room was basic and rustic like a mountain lodge should be, but very clean.

The lodge is at an elevation of about 7000 feet (the city below is at 3000 feet) so it was very comfortable in day but got chilly at night. There was a heater in our room. There is a lovely fireplace in the lounge area where Matt made a roaring fire to drive the chill away. Several comfy sofas and chairs by the fair, and bar service, made for an enjoyable evening! Good assortment of wines, beer and liquor on offer.

The menu is limited as the restaurant is only for guests of the few rooms but very good. You get a choice of typical Costa Rican cuisine for breakfast and supper. The night we were there there was chicken with beans and rice, vegetarian beans and rice, hearty vegetable soup, and texas style cheeseburger. Very affordable and made with fresh ingredients. Tasty and excellent food made by Leah! For dessert there was a Costa Rican tres leche (3 milk cake) that was so creamy, and had fresh local strawberries - best cake I have ever had. (Note - a LOT of strawberries are grown locally and can be bought roadside. Also you drive through various coffee farms on the way up where you can buy their product.) For breakfast, which was included in our stay, there was eggs any style with beans and rice, a sausage option, or pancakes, as well as cereals. Lots of good coffee and super fresh homemade juice to wash it all down.

Can't say enough good about this lodge. We only payed $105 Canadian ($85 US) and got fantastic value especially with breakfast included. Great talking to Matt and Leah, who gave us some good travel tips, and other guests. Also they have 2 or 3 rescue dogs. Would love to have stayed another night and used the lodge as a base to explore more local attractions.

The drive to the volcano park was 5 minutes, a further 1500 feet in gain up the mountain. You have to buy tickets in advance, which we had, with an entry time of 800 am. Access was temporarily limited that day due to a severe spike in gas and sulphur emissions but they let us in once the wind shifted. It was clear all morning, we were there until almost eleven. Quite the sight - lots of steam and yellow sulphur coming out of the lake in the crater.

Amazing location and views, warm hospitality

Our first day in Costa Rica was spent in the mountains here. This made such a great impression on us and set a great mood for a family vacation. Beautiful view and excellent food. Cannot recommend this place more. 

Amazing way to see the mountains

Me and my wife where looking for a place to celebrate our first anniversary, (we had visited poás lodge couple of times before but just the restaurant) now we have decided to stay, the first impression was that administration had change since the last time we visited, Matthew and Leah gave us a really good first impression, by receiving us like family, very dedicated and careful on details, as the day passed we confirmed that we made the right decision by choosing this place, they did our experience outstanding, they were amazing, they helped to make our celebration memorable, I have no words to appreciate enough the attention they gave to us. That's what I call taking care of the business.

Leah and Mathew go above and beyond to make sure your stay is comfortable, and the meals are delicious.  Every room has its own spectacular view of the valley below. 
Weather is cooler at this elevation, so the fireplace in the evening was enjoyable and relaxing.

First night in Costa Rica with yet a late arrival (landing at 7pm)! Not wanting to stay in San Jose, we chose this lodge for its location near the volcano and on the heights! Very good accommodation for the manager and his wife, the rooms are large and clean, good bedding, proper bathroom, but above all what a night and day view of the valley that we slept the curtains open! The most beautiful restaurant room at the same time very cozy with a fireplace, all made of wood and an unbeatable view! Very helpful boss who booked us access to the volcano after consulting for us his webcam for sure visibility from the top! I highly recommend this hotel!

What a sight.

Poas Lodge is really and truly a special special place.   Starting with the location——WOW, what a view! 270 degrees of beautiful vistas down to San Jose, the surrounding mountains/volcanos, and as far as the west coast on a clear day.    Truly stunning vistas, both day and night.   Add to that the rustic feel of the inn, inclusive of a lovely wood-burning fireplace, and all the modern amenities (including the best internet on our Costa Rica trip).   On top of all that was the warmth and attention to detail from the hosts.   Matt and Leah were an absolute pleasure to have as our hosts.   We really felt like welcome houseguests.   They cooked amazing breakfasts and dinners.   They suggested some great places to visit (including a working dairy farm, where we milked a cow).   And the morning of our departure they arranged for our trip up to Poas, which was stunning, on a clear, sunny, August morning.   We cannot recommend Poas Lodge highly enough.  We can’t wait to come back.
