It's a nice property with a nice garden by the Marne canal, a shame the interior of the house is not on the same level, the rooms are nice, but too old.

Nice old property and friendly reception

If you want a ‘bland, expect everything’ hotel then stay elsewhere.  When staying in a 200 yr old ex Champagne House, things will not always be what you expect.  The house itself sits resplendent, tucked away in a wonderful garden next to the canal.  The rooms are spacious (ours was ensuite) and were very comfortable.  Breakfast was perfectly adequate and plentiful.  Whilst in this day and age the WiFi speed may annoy some, there are bigger things to worry about when you can sit in such great surrounds sipping the champagne of the owner.  A real traditional gem.

Classic French

The house is lovely in a really nice setting and some of the rooms are very interesting. Our room was huge with a separate hall and bathroom, and the bed was reasonably comfortable. However our friends room was quite small and the bed was in an alcove and uncomfortable. Lighting was quite poor with bulbs missing, and automatic lighting did not work properly. The showers looked good but hardly worked as they were so blocked with lime scale. Crucially, whilst the hot water was scalding in the evening, in the morning it was cold.
Breakfast was not very good. There was a selection of food but not very fresh. The cornflakes were stale and, as I discovered when I took a mouthful, the milk was sour. I don't think the butter was much better, and the cold meat looked as if it had been on the breakfast table a few times.
There is WiFi but it is understandably flakey given the nature of the house.
It is a shame as the village and canal are lovely and this could be a superb place to stay.

Authentic Old French House Experience

My husband and I stayed here one night while on an extended bicycle trip in the Marne valley. We were very comfortable at this place, and in fact it turned out to be our favorite overnight spot on the whole trip, primarily because the innkeeper was so gracious and helpful. The house itself is big and interesting because it seems like a home, with personal details in the breakfast room and other areas. Our room on the second floor (Elysée) was spacious, comfortable and quiet. The wi-fi worked, even on the second floor. The small fridge had cold drinks (for purchase), and we appreciated this after a full day of cycling. We can recommend Madame Giraud’s champagne brand, too. We arrived much later than we had intended, but Madame gave us a relaxed and pleasant welcome. I agree with an earlier reviewer, who described her as “unfazed.” Our stay was on a holiday weekend and local cafes were closed, but Madame helped us place an order for a pizza delivery and made sure that we had what we needed. We cannot say enough about how much her attitude and helpfulness made us feel welcome. The house is an older house, with a lovely garden. If you expect polished, updated décor, you may feel this place has faded glory. But you would be missing a treat. We can recommend a stay here.

Relaxing and welcoming

This stay got off to an unfortunate start as I arrived on foot having lost my husband, car, handbag and phone! Madame was completely unfazed and very helpful. She showed me our beautiful room (Soleil) and I had completely calmed down by the time my other half showed up.  The house is in a magnificent setting in a beautiful garden down the canalside.  Our room was massive with a huge bathroom attached.  This has very unusual plumbing for the enormous bath but we enjoyed it anyway!

Madame has her own champagne and we took advantage of the lovely weather to sit out in the garden and drink a half bottle; we thought it was very good and in fact bought a half dozen to take home with us.

The breakfast was plentiful and very good quality; the previous evening Madame had asked if we preferred coffee or chocolate.  When I asked for English tea she looked doubtful but said she would do what she could.  In the morning there was a good pot of very good black tea, much better than the Liptons which is normally served in France so very pleased.

We would love to stay at La Marotiere again and for longer next time and would recommend it enthusiastically.

Super place, lovely hostess

The one good thing about this hotel was th breakfast. For France it's very good with ham, cheese, yoghurt and eggs in addition to bread and croissants. However the quality of the rooms is very variable we stayed with friends and one room was quite nice and the other really wasn't at all. Also the service is a bit lax. We asked for new towels and never received them and only got toilet paper after repeated requests.

It's a shame, but our hotel doesn't have a breakfast, it's a shame. The room is big, the bathroom is a little small but functional. inconvenience: there's no bell at the entrance so if you find that the hotel is not there, you can't reach it, because the number is the owner's, not a cell phone, as was the case with us and another couple, who had a reservation in the afternoon and didn't come back in the evening.

beautiful property

We had a very pleasant night there. We had a large and beautiful room that was comfortable. The bathroom would deserve a little refreshment but otherwise it was fine. The breakfast was very complete and the reception very friendly. The owner was very helpful and good advice.

It's hard work

The outside is very pleasant, the house is beautiful, our guesthouse is very friendly. On the other hand, the rooms smell of dust, it's impossible to use the pillows in the closet: furniture that needs to be changed. No soap in the shower (I had to ask for it) - for 90 euros a night at 2:00, the water bottle paid: shame! On the other hand, nothing to say about the breakfast that was copious. We were disappointed with the quality/price ratio.

need for refreshment

I have a hard time believing the other comments. Here is my personal opinion: the owner is very friendly. The room is large but very old (but not comfortable with cake ears at all), the bathroom is right, even though it is very difficult to find hot water under the shower. The dining room smells old and dog, no window looking out, it's a dark caffern, old furniture and old kitchens. The breakfast is empty, slices of empty cheeses of poor quality, slices of ham, almost dried croissants, low-end orange juice... The gym is sad, the sauna is sad and it's sad to die with old stuff in an 8 m2 fountain.
