I booked the Chateau via Booking.com for a group of eight friends visiting historical sites in the Anjou region and didn't really know what to expect as there was limited review information online. But what we got blew us away and we were amazed to find ourselves living in a historical setting rather than just visiting. 

But it was also a friendly, relaxed family home from home for us, with a kitchen table big enough for eight of us to eat informally together (as well as an enormous formal dining room which soon found a better use for table-top wargames). 

We had booked the whole chateau so had a choice of amazing bedrooms, all en-suite with modern bathrooms. We also enjoyed walking around the extensive grounds, with meadows, a lake, horses and goats to look at. There was good wifi and the owner was friendly and helpful, speaking excellent English. 

They don't have credit card facilities so be prepared to pay by bank transfer - something that worried me for a while because of some rather hysterical media coverage in the UK about problems with this method - but everything worked out more than OK.  

We wish Pierre, the owner, every success with his plans to develop the business.

The highlight of our holiday

A group of 8 of us (4 couples) visited for 5 nights.  On arrival we found we had the place to ourselves.  All the rooms are different and we were shown 5 and asked if four of them were ok (they were and the fifth would have been fine as well).  All rooms were en suite and had lovely views of the surrounding parkland.  We had access to a modern kitchen which was the right size for the 8 of us and which was very well equipped with a large cooker, fridge freezer, dishwasher and a large amount of crockery and cutlery. As well as the kitchen we had access to three other large salons to lounge around in.  One was the dining room with a large table suitable for 14 or more to eat at comfortably.  The table was also at least 100 years old!  The others were both lounges, one with a TV, and both with enough room for the whole group.  Overall the Chateau was a high point of our holiday and made a perfect base to explore the region from.
The Chateau is not however your usual hotel or guest house with many of the furnishings being original and so probably not the place to bring over-active children (although there is loads of space outside for games).  In some respects it is like staying in a period drama, although without the drama (I would say without the chance of someone dropping dead, but talking to the owner he is thinking of doing murder mystery events). 
Finally the owner was very friendly and made us feel very welcome, although without feeling over looked.  He was also kind enough to show us around the rest of the chateau while we were there, together with telling us about the history of the house and the family.
Being an old property this is sadly not suitable for those with mobility issues with stair access to all rooms although there is a room on the ground floor where this is minimised.

Truely an exceptional and unusual place to stay

A group of 10 of us rented the public portion of this Chateau ( the portion not occupied by the owner) for a 10 day exploration of the surrounding Loire Valley area.  We had use of a kitchen, dining room, two sitting rooms (including TV and WiFi) as well as more than enough bedrooms to accommodate our group.  Each morning we would gather in the kitchen to eat locally baked croissants and plan our day. Then we would head off on day trips to local towns and chateaux, returning in the evening for a self-prepared lite dinner in the dining room.
Everything in the chateau is in grand scale with original decor that brings to mind what life in "old days" might have been like.
The host and hostess were most gracious and made our visit most enjoyable.

We strongly recommend this chateau for family or friend reunions.  We found fixing our breakfasts and simple dinners (what's better than wine and cheese plus a good salad?)  together a bonding experience that melded well with the enveloping decor of the chateau.

A great place for a family or group reunion for exploring the Loire Valley

The building is very beautiful, lost in a park, and only a church appears in the distance. The welcome is warm and you immediately feel good in this castle where several rooms on the ground floor are open to guests. The rooms are spacious and the quiet is perfect. The bathroom has all the necessary comforts. Despite the noise that the old doors can make, we have never been disturbed. The breakfast is in a beautiful room. It is simple but good (bread and fresh croissants) and cozy. I highly recommend this place.

A very pleasant stay

If you love glamour, history and a scare at bedtime this is the place for you! We loved the 'my castle is your home' feeling created by the wonderful owner. We arrived on a Sunday forgetting everything in France is closed, never mind the villages between Cholet and Angers. She rustled us up a lovely meal served in the seriously impressive dining room, and along with a couple of glasses of tasty Bordeaux we were ready to take pictures and make our friends seriously jealous on Facebook using the courtesy wifi! And all for a sous, well more precisely €95 for a double room and €24 for a meal for two including wine!! This place would be ideal for a group of friends who wanted to have a murder mystery night/ tell ghost stories and writers, history buffs or horror fans. It's very beautiful but slightly creepy with its collection of mounted antlers in the hall, the tapestries, ancient pictures of ancestors etc. In May the drawing room was a little chilly but bring a wrap and enjoy the 20 foot high ceilings. The bedrooms are large, warm and comfortable and a hot bath was a joy. There are no TV's and that's fine with me. It's tricky to find, in effect it's behind the church in the village of La Jumelliere, but worth a detour for a couple of nights. They have they're own wine too!

Not so faded glory.

Looking for a place to stay close to a vineyard I wanted to visit in the Loire the Chateau de la Jumelliere popped up on my screen and I thought it looked different enough to provide an interesting experience. So I booked

I presumed that the chateau had been converted into a hotel, but on arrival soon realised my mistake. This is a family home, with resident family ... so if you want modern, standard hotel rooms then don't think about booking ... you'll not like it ... but if you want to step back in time to a more gentle, more refined, tranquil time ... then this place is worth a visit.

The village and chateau have the same name, so easy to find and well signposted from the main road. Thereafter less so ... but you'll eventually find the place situated in acres of parkland with a lake.

The chateau was built in 1866 and most of the decor and furniture are original from that date.
We were met by the son of the family who runs B&B business and he was charming in the extreme ... almost a thowback to a different age. He showed us round the guest areas and to our room. Everywhere was very comfortable with a draping of faded grandeur. Some parts, like the huge wooden spiral main staircase are just jawdropping.  

Our room was large and comfortable. Bed was far more comfortable than it looked. Bathroom modern suite in room hung with engravings ...  

They don't cook, but we were offered a cold collation (his word not ours) ... or they would have booked us a table in a 10km away restaurant. We decided to have a cheese plate and duck pate  to share. They came with bread, salad and fruit. We did not eat everything provided and everything was a of the finest quality. A very nice option if you can't be bothered to drive out to find a restaurant. It was surprisingly enjoyable and served in the main dining room at a table well over 100 years old. Very simple food, but very good.

Breakfast was the same ... simple but good quality.

No TV and good Wifi in public areas.

My first impressions (apprehension) were wrong about Chateau de la Jumelliere. It was sad to see this chateau in its faded state, in need of a good deal of refurbishment, but the charm of the family and warmth of their welcome made us feel very comfortable in their home. This really is a great place to find peace and slow down the bustle of modern day living.

I'd happily recommend this as a place to stay ... but only to those who'd accept its charms for what they are.
