We traveled as couple participating a wedding party nearby. Very nice surroundings. Great historic and authentic feeling in the castle - yet being like a home abroad having modern amenities. Donna was a great host and came up with a great variety of local breakfast offerings and personally went above and beyond our expectations assuring we had a pleasant stay over. We stayed at rocking horse room - just great.

Perfect home base for a weekend in Normandy participating a wedding

The drive from the ferry port of Caen took just over an hour and was stress free ,it was a delight as most of the journey was on country lanes.

Le Vieux Chateau is in a perfect rural setting just outside the tiny village of Renouard. Vimoutiers the nearest town  is an 8km drive down picturesque winding lanes.

When you get to the village look for the church on the hill, the chateau is about 200m from it.

The Chateau is in all aspects a delight and is owned and seemingly singlehandedly managed by Donna McDougall who was responsible for its creation from near derelict – the quality of eclectic finishes and furnishings is of the highest standard

There are 4 bedrooms available and continental breakfast is included, every morning Donna went to Vimoutiers and brought us bread and croissants to enjoy with local cheese, yoghurts with fresh fruit, homemade jam and marmalade. Fresh orange juice and choices of tea and coffee was available.

Breakfast is taken in the main dining kitchen area at a mutually agreed time.

There are no tea of coffee facilities in the room but Donna encourages guests to use the kitchen area where both can be made at your leisure. The use of the large fridge for cold drinks etc is also made available. 

We stayed in the large Chambre Rouge which is on the first floor and has  a separate ensuite bathroom and dressing room. It had a comfy king size bed.

There are no TVs in the rooms however there is a large extremely comfortable lounge / library area which has a communal TV with an abundance of channels including UK stations

Wi-Fi is free and effective.

The bathroom was large and the shower was superb, masses of hot water and with a pressure that could take the hide off a rhino!

Towels were extra extra large and as with the dressing gowns and other soft furnishings of excellent quality

Security is no problem whatsoever and the silence is deafening – it’s the most relaxing location I have been to – ever!

Donna is the font of all local knowledge and she supplied us with many interesting local attractions to visit- she also kindly arranged bookings to local restaurants.

The location is perfect for visiting the coastal attractions and places of interest and Deauville is only an hour away- the drive is idyllic.

For those who like golf, walking, cycling, riding etc it’s perfect.

I strongly recommend you visit Donna’s establishment – you will not be disappointed!

Idyllic Normandy

Spend a wonderful evening at the Château. Our family was able to have 2 adjacent rooms in a private wing. Most beautiful. Host and other guests were very pleasant and fun to speak with. Grounds, horses, ponds were amazing. Hope to return in the future. 

Wonderful Escape 

what an amazing place, tucked away, but worth the trip, Donna was so helpful, met us on arrival at the entrance, we arrived late, she managed to arrange a restaurant was a great host.
The room was breath taking with stunning view over the estate, breakfast was fab, and would recommend if near or nearby do visit

Stunning, hidden gem

Le Vieux Chateau – simply stunning. Staying here was like entering a different world for the week. Step into a piece of history and experience the best of rural France – this restored Chateau is everything you would want in a European getaway. Our host Donna has a wealth of knowledge about the history of the local area and produce. We enjoyed delicious pastries and cheese by a crackling fire – the perfect romantic setting. We enjoyed the war memorabilia and Donna is able to explain the history with this aspect. She suggested some amazing daytrips – nothing was longer than two hours commute by car. I cannot recommend this holiday enough – you will not be disappointed and nothing else on our trip compared! If you are struggling to decide on where to stay in rural France – c’est la vie – this is the place to go.

Beautifully Restored Fairytale Chateau

Total tranquility, seclusion, romantic, love of detail, huge, splendid nature, unparalleled ambiance in the house and in the four rooms, we felt like a museum... there are no words for it. It took our breath away. Normandy is filled with beautiful accommodations, but Le Vieux Château is lovely for us! We are back! Information about restaurants... you get from the housewife who breathes life into this property.

For this accommodation, there must be a separate category - a place of desire!

A very nice site but a big noise problem (a very noisy neighbour above our heads).

We stayed only one night but we were very impressed with the place: a very nice restaurant in a country house with a flawless, very English welcome.

Nice place for a romantic weekend.

It's a beautifully renovated castle with a lot of taste. The rooms are very comfortable. Donna, the hostess, pays special attention to the well-being of her guests. No details are forgotten. Breakfast and dinner are perfect as well. We could play tennis, borrow bicycles for a short walk... an address where you can come back without hesitation!

A romantic stop at the heart of Norman history

The housewife is exceptionally kind and useful, the room is gorgeous. The castle is maintained by a woman of taste. The breakfast is understood and it is very copious. In fact everything is wonderful. Go for it!!
