The signature of St. John of Angely

If you want to see a monument in Saint-Jean-d'Angely, it's its monumental remains of the royal abbey. Its construction stopped with the French Revolution. It still has the two killing towers. Behind a church, a more modest one was built.

Colossal remains

Right in the middle of the old town a majestic building with spacious private rooms at an affordable price.... Staircase pr the pilgrims of Mr. Jacques de compostelle.... She can't leave indifferent... If you arrive too late to think and you've lost your codes to see at the back of the courtyard near the main gate.... Someone should be able to find you the keeper.... The staff is very nice and tidy. Attention...

Historic spacious and affordable

The Royal Abbey and the ruins of the nearby abbey church offer a majestic architectural ensemble that would surely deserve a more complete visit and possibly a residence.

A Rich Legacy

Large clear rooms (especially those overlooking the courtyard, but the others are calm and pleasant as well), comfortable and convenient, whatever the size of the group. A very friendly reception. As the manager reminds us, this is not a hotel: no overnight reception or breakfast. No difficulty in finding free parking nearby, ideal for nice places to dine. For breakfast: the embarrassment of choosing a two-step bakery, coffee shop or supermarket near the covered market.

Sublime frame at a very reasonable price

We stayed at the Abbey which is very picturesque and beautiful building! The rooms are of a standard basic nature, 'a bed for a night' style. If it's luxury you're used to this is not the place for you.  It was very comfortable and clean, our room had four beds, even though there were only two of us. This was not a problem however and not a negative on the stay. The shower worked well and there was always hot water. The toilet did break however and I heard an other guest had the same trouble. The location is ideal for visiting the town and the locals are very friendly! If it's a bed for a night you're looking for with basics, this will be fine for you. Enjoy your stay there, we did. 

One more note, we heard the restaurant there is amazing, I was sad not to have heard this before as we did not eat there.  There are only a couple of restaurants in the town, so make sure to visit the one at the actual abbey itself. 

Two night stay

An interesting place, very peaceful.  A basic room (but included en-suite), it had no TV but we found the lack of external ‘entertainment’ actually added to our stay. The location was excellent, being in the centre of the town, and traffic noise was non-existent!!  Plenty of nearby cafes, restaurants  and shops gave us enough to do over the weekend.

The Abbaye isn't a 'hotel' per se, and offered no breakfast. Also, finding parking, although not a real issue, wasn't too easy close to the accommodation itself.

The town is small, but well-located for both the countryside, other towns (eg Saintes)  and the coast. Despite its size, it has many restaurants and cafés, some actually open Sunday!! The abbaye itself is an interesting historically and is set in a warren on small streets.

A weekend in Saint-Jean-d'Angély

This old school/abbey is quite impressive from the courtyard. Inside there was no map or person to guide us. The exhibits were closed and locked so we finally left. Sometimes it's like that when traveling and not fully understanding the language. The parking was good.

Beautiful Building but Hardly Tourable

Stayed here while attending a wedding ceremony with my other half and 2 children we had requested a  room to sleep four persons but were given a room with 3 beds. We tried to get a cot for the baby but they do not have any. In hindsight, I should have tried other places around but having arrived there around 6 pm there was not a lot we could do. We stayed for 3 nites and it was a clean room with beds, storage space and WC. There is no television or phone in any of the rooms. I was informed of this before and it was a good to have a break from the television. The room has no airconditioning or fan and was quite humid so had to leave the window open but being next to a street leading to the main part of town there was noise from revellers walking outside all hours of the night. Do not bother with the breakfast provided as unless you are satisfied with a cup of a coffee and a croissant! You can buy breakfast pastries from the local bakers and enjoy them with a cup of tea/coffee from the many places that serve.
On the other hand, it is closely located to the cafes, pubs, resturants and other shops and most importantly the 'royal abbey' and 'center of european culture' There was also a market in the town center on the Saturday.
