You can stay here for a maximum of one night! You had to stay here because there's a 24-hour reception, you arrived too late for the ferry. The location is good, three minutes' walk to the ferry. But the rooms are absolutely disgusting, the mirrors were so dirty that you couldn't see yourself anymore. A mattress lay on the floor for whatever reason. No sheets, we all slept with clothes on. Never again! No recommendation.

Dirty rooms, good location

Me and 4 others rocked up here with no reservation ( we weren’t supposed to be staying in Parapat) .. after looking at various accommodation found Melissa Homestay and it was very affordable so we decided to stay here. Joe the son of Melissa was super friendly and gave us 3 double rooms, 2 of them facing forward onto the balcony with windows and one further back away from main road. The homestay has a balcony and a beautiful roof terrace to hang out on, and they also do a food menu which is ideal for when you need quick food without venturing too far. Joe helped us book our bus to Bukkitingi (he got us the best price and arranged it for us) as well as a taxi to the bus stop (Melissa ran out into the street to stop a taxi van for us in the rain!!) ..and then he came to say goodbye and check we were at the right place before we got on the bus. It was a great little find at the last minute with such nice hospitality, and is close to the port to get to the island over the lake. I would recommend this place for any budget backpackers in Sumatra!!

Really great stay with lovely owners 

I stayed at the melissa palace before I left for samosir. When we arrived at midnight, a staff guy was there to greet us. After reading the comments on trip advisor I was a little scared but I was rather positively surprised by this establishment. The rooms are correct and spacious. The bathroom deserves to be renovated and not very clean but it's fine. The staff offered us breakfast (pancakes and coffee) which was really nice on its part (the hotel had an empty air..), the hotel is ideally located two minutes' walk from the harbor to toba, plus.. for a large lake, I recommend.

Not too bad.

I'd booked in advance as somewhat paranoid about being on the street overnight, a standard room which is really basic.
Big airy room with open vented windows and big bed, ensuite has cold water only.
It was clean (perhaps due to being booked in advance?), plugs in room no bedside light, no sheets just a blanket to pull over you, no air con no fan but didn't need them. I wore long trousers and top in case of mosquitoes. Slept well enough despite the road traffic and very loud voices at 6am from the next room. WiFi works on the very large and lovely balcony outside the room. 
Staff friendly. 
I paid 195000 which I think is expensive for what you get but I've quickly learnt to lower all expectations, this is Sumatra and stuff is of course basic.

Okay for a one nighter

After a very long day travelling to Parapat, we managed to miss the last ferry. Checking through our Lonely Planet, we saw that this hotel was conveniently located next to the harbour and recommended by them.
With high expectations, we arrived at Melissa Palace, a nice looking building with a large group balcony and seating area at the front.
The lady at reception showed us to our room (we hadn't pre booked) and at first glance, after 12 hours on the road, it seemed adequate. The rooms are very plain, no decorations on the walls, no tv but the biggest problem is the cleanliness.
The room hadn't been cleaned since the last guests. There was hair on the floor, pee stains on the toilet seat, the mirror in the bathroom was extremely dirty and in the sink we found stains of toothpaste.
We accepted the room anyway because it was late and asked for the price. She said 250,000. We knew the rooms started from 190,000 and so we asked if they had any cheaper rooms, maybe smaller ones. She immediately lowered the price to 200,000 for the same room.
For this price, we don't think this standard is acceptable and we would highly recommend you avoid this hotel.

Very dirtx

As most hotels in Parapat were fully booked we ended up in this place and I can definitely not recommend this place. Very noisy, bad locks on the doors, no electricity in the rooms, no air co or fan so very humid and warm. Only cold water no decent sanitarium at all, no breakfast and a price similar to most much better facilities in this town. If you can not find any other hotel and you need to be in Parapat it is an option but if anything else is available it is probably a better option. Only positive aspects nice view from the balcony and staff is rather friendly. No wifi.

Very very basic and not to be recommended place

The hotel was very friendly, but the person spoke very little English. The room was nice but the bathroom was catastrophic (no shower) The price justified the simplicity of the hotel. We had to stay there for three nights, we left after two nights.

A place to stay for a night without difficulty

last week, i went to Medan and explored many areas in Medan and its surrounding areas such as berastagi, siantar, and parapat. When i touched down to parapat (this is the region of toba lake located at), i directly went to Melissa Palace as I have booked it a week before, knowing it from the internet. Lonely Planet even recommend this place for backpackers. So, i confidently chose this place. Then, when i arrived at Melissa, one thing in mind was: "this is really not bad". The owner is very friendly, and the place is clean. The interior is actually quite old, but well.. the most important thing is the cleanliness, no? and the owner keeps this place clean and neat. I got room at second floor with toba lake view. how much i spend for a night? only IDR 190,000. cheap, right? the bathroom is inside the room, and it is also clean. It is indeed not fancy, but it is clean. there is also a tv with quite complete channel. i could sleep very tight. the cost is not included breakfast, but the owner can cook breakfast for you. I chose fried rice, and the taste was yum. i requested half-cooked egg and the owner served it in accordance with my request. the owner even gave us like a fried bread ( i dont know what's exactly the name of it) for free and also a glass of hot tea also for free. this place is more like a homestay. the location is very near to like a small port for going to Samosir island. so, you can just walk around 5 minutes to the port. I highly recommend this place for the backpackers! :)
