Worst hotel experience yet in Japan ... booked 2 nights at this place and barely got through the first night as they used a very overpowering floral washing detergent on all the bedding, the kind that gets stuck in your throat and makes you itch ...

Asked the host for some towels to change the smell of the pillow and she gave them to me, all seemed fine. Then out of the blue, nearly an hour later, got handed a phone with her husband literally yelling at me, 'Leave my house, leave my house, now, if you don't like it. I will give you a refund'. It was 10pm and I am somewhere in the middle of nowhere, in the cold and dark near Chitose, Hokkaido (we were brought there by car, as there was no other transport).

I tried to sleep but gave up as the smell was so overpowering, and instead sat up all night in the noisy foyer area. Got zero sleep. Out of courtesy I didn't try and wake the host, thought we would resolve it in the morning.

Well, in the morning, I simply got told, 'no refund, our cancellation policy'. Um but you were willing to give it to me the night before? I only wanted the upcoming night refunded so I could get some sleep somewhere else. But no, she's sticking to her policy.

Maybe I should have got a hint when the cancellation period was mid-March for a mid-May booking, these people are just after money! It was also really cramped and narrow in the room, from wanting to fit too many people into a small space, with one shower for all the guests. It looked nice and was otherwise clean but that was about it!  They also live upstairs so you can hear stomping around for a while.

As we leave, she drives two of us to the airport ... and part way along, as I asked for  some money back, she stops, opens the door and orders me to exit! (in a field of grass lol).

Naturally I stay in the car and when we get to the airport she goes to the police! So a few Japanese police get involved, and they are very nice, but she openly admits she will not fix my problem with her place, yet wants to keep my money. She is stating that I have cancelled her place, yet I haven't yet. I told her I will write a bad review on booking.com and when I went to do it, I can't because my booking has been cancelled by her without my permission! How can they do this, she still had my money for that night!

So the police helped me a bit afterwards, and I am still trying to contact booking.com in Japan to resolve it. But yeah, a very exhausting night at New Chitose Guesthouse Yurin... hope it gets better elsewhere ... far away from there!
