What a wonderful experience! I had such a lovely stay here. Staff are incredible and go above and beyond to make your stay comfortable. 

The food was delicious - it's Japanese kaiseki style and is beautifully presented. 

The onsen was also great, it's alkeline based and have indoor baths and an outdoor bath that was beautiful and relaxing. 

You can also meet the ryokans Shiba inu, Cocoa. Overall had an amazing time and loved the area. Would recommend.

Excellent

First of all the Ryokan looks amazing inside and out. And the staff were incredibly kind and helpful.

Breakfast and dinner were very fairly priced and we're both delicious and beautifully presented.

The onsen had an indoor and outdoor area with three baths, which were very clean, picturesque and relaxing.

The room itself looked very traditional and came with all expected amenities, including a TV, phone and traditional Japanese tea set.

It was very fun wearing the yukata while relaxing in our room and after going to the onsen.

In summary, this ryoken is well worth considering if you're staying in the area, and we would highly recommend it to anyone looking to stay in a traditional ryoken for a reasonable price.

Prime example of Japanese hospitality and well deserving of 5 stars!

We had a very nice one-night stay at Kawacho and definitely recommend it. The staff were welcoming and hospitable, making us feel spoiled. We ate dinner and breakfast in the restaurant, which was delicious - and they very kindly prepared vegetarian food for us (with advance warning), which we greatly appreciated.

The room was clean and a decent size, with futon beds which were comfortable. We had a view out over the valley, so buildings and forest. There were also some proper chairs (not ones on the floor) which we were grateful for, as we are not very good at sitting on the floor! As in most ryokans, the baths were a communal onsen (separated for men and women) so you do not have an en suite, but we enjoyed the onsen which was large and had both indoor and outdoor pools. 

Location is fine, although you will probably need a car, on the edge of town and the start of the forest. Very peaceful area and nice to feel like you were on the edge of nature.

There is a patient and sweet dog who we met as we are leaving  (but for those who don't like dogs, she was very calm and on a lead so you do not need to worry).

Price was reasonable for the level of service and bearing in mind it was a last minute booking on a bank holiday!

Charming ryokan

These days we only tend to write reviews of hotels we particularly like, and the Kawacho is one of these. The Kawacho is a small/medium size rural ryokan with a forested hill rising behind it which offers some pleasant shaded walking on a hot afternoon. It is very reasonably priced and fairly traditional in that rooms do not have private bathrooms, although some have private toilets. There are however very nice and reasonably large hot baths. Men have both indoor and outdoor baths, and so do women. What's good is that there is real variation in bath temperature, the outdoor baths are quite hot, while the indoor ones are just pleasantly warm. Take your pick, or swap back and forth as I tended to do.
What makes this ryokan special however are the staff and the food.
All the staff from manager down are really friendly, very helpful, and a lot of fun. The result is that this hotel has a good feel about, the people are genuinely warm. 
The second plus is the food. As I said this ryokan is quite reasonably priced, but the food is as good or better than many ryokans that are twice the price. The chef really is very good!
Nice people and good food, makes for a great stay.
We stayed at the Kawacho for a weekend at the start of September 2018, and used it as a base for driving around the Hachimantai national park area.

A friendly rural ryokan

We went here for two nights to get away from the city and relax, and it was wonderful. The staff were friendly and attentive (with some help from Google translate) and the nearby waterfall, garden, mountain walks, and in-house onsen were lovely. The food was also fantastic and interesting, and one of the staff even drove us to the train station when our taxi was late.
