I travelled with my wife and seven year old daughter. 
Highlights were our traditional Japanese tatami mat room and the Japanese breakfast. 
If you are a westerner and have not tried these, try both. The room had a feeling of calm. Our stay in it was restful as we padded about carefully in our slippers or socks or bare feet. Though it's a traditional room, there were plenty of sockets for electrical devices.  
The Japanese breakfast was served at a traditional Japanese table, set low to the floor, with with seating that allowed our legs to dangle below floor level so we felt completely comfortable.  There was a great variety of Japanese breakfast dishes to eat. 
The attitude of the staff is friendly and kind.  We felt the peaceful atmosphere of the temples with their wooden floors and no-shoes rule, extending into this hotel.  The price was quite reasonable too.

A calming traditional Japanese experience at an affordable price.

Ryokan Kosen is just perfect for a stay in Nara.
Location is great, just nearby the Pagoda and walking distance from the park. The room was just perfect for our family (japanese style) and we could enjoy the public bath.

It's been a short stay (just three days) but very satisfying.The location is extraordinary because it overlooks the lake and when you sit on the closed balcony of the room and look out the window...what a delicious feeling.On the other hand, the staff is super attentive and notice that they work with me.Natural flowers and details that make Nata fall in love with you.Although not new is perfect!

This hotel is close to the major sights and you can take pleasant walks to Todai-ji and Nara Koen.  A short walk away is the Konishi arcade if you like fast food, souvenir shops etc but my family and i preferred to eat at the Naramachi district just a short walk south of the ryokan.

Rooms were ordinary but the location is an A-plus!

We enjoyed staying in this place, except for the room, which was not overly clean (dusty!) and smelled heavily of smoke. As there was no non-smoking alternative when booking and the place was full, I did not complain, but I do think that non-smoking rooms may not exist in this ryokan. Apart from that, the place was nice and staff were helpful in spite of the language barrier, but considering that there is no breakfast available, the value for money is not really very good.
