The Host and his wife are lovey attentive people who are very giving in their time and knowledge but the room/accomodation I stayed in was basic. A blanket and a towel provided that was all; nothing else apart from a lower sheet on the bed. Not even water was available in the room.The communal bathroom had little or no toilet paper, no mirror to shave etc. No room service was provided apart from a cup of tea for breakfast. It is very basic

Lovely hosts but less than basic

This is not a regular hostel. Mr Balan & his wife Vigni run this place like a home so you are more like a paying guest staying in their house.They have 2 kids Kishen & Sri who keep this place lively.I paid for a bunk bed but got a family for free.We have now become friends for life and i know that now I have a home in Penang,also.

Home + Hostel..loved it

Spent a couple of nights here and my only regret is not staying longer! From the moment I arrived to the moment I was leaving I was made feel so at home! The owner, his wife and his two kids are so lovely, his wife even sent his daughter to my room with some cake for me and my partner, so welcoming. 
The owner was so great with giving us lots of information about what to do and where to eat and even helped us out when we were leaving for langkawi. Such a beautiful family, I had such a lovely stay here! 
Really good WiFi, a locker to keep your personal things safe so you don’t have to worry about them and good air conditioning if you need a break from the Malaysian heat.

Made me feel at home!

I really didn't expect to encounter racism in Malaysia...
So, I booked a hostel in Penang via Booking.com to find this message from the hostel asking me to cancel my reservation as they don't accept Middle Eastern people... Now that's a first  🤔

And it's a non-refundable booking so if I DO cancel, I'll be charged so it's like they want me to pay them for being a racist property and me being a middle eastern.

Side note: don't get the wrong idea about being in Malaysia; it's culturaly diverse here. People have been so friendly to me, they're always curious to chit chat on the public bus or so. It's just a situation that is bound to happen anywhere unfortunately.

This place is racist. They don’t accept people from the Middle East with no reasons.

I reserved a night at 28 Bahari only to find a message from them telling me to cancel my non-refundable booking because they don't receive middle eastern guests!!
So they actually wanted me to cancel and get money from me as if it was a reward for them for being such racists.
As a female solo traveler, I've been to many hostels in many countries, in different continents and that was a first and totally unacceptable.
(My fees were waived by calling the customer support of booking.com and NOT the hostel)

Racists

Simple, cozy, clean, with a comfortable shed, all at a good price, the best is the attention of the family that runs it, it is located near the center of Georgetown.

 Economics

Fortunately, the family that runs this guesthouse is very friendly, and you have to avoid the last room on the inside of the courtyard just above the air conditioning engines... unbearable.

Average guesthouse

We had booked the double room with balcony for two nights. Since this room is directly facing the main street, it's hard to think of sleeping. Because of the wooden cladding between the room and the balcony, the street noise enters the room unabated, without earwax you can't sleep here! Unfortunately, besides the street noise, the children who were playing disturbed us too. It's not that we don't like children, but if the floor is shaken to a certain extent almost without interruption, it's too easy. The accommodation is very well located, bus commuters can be run to 10 to 15 minutes, the bus stop is one to two minutes away.

Double rooms with balcony - only with hearing protection

The hostel family is very friendly, they always made me feel at home. The place is not very nice, but it is close to everything and cheap. The rooms were nice, the beds comfortable. The bathrooms need a little repair.

Simple and welcoming.

Very nice stay in this family and comfortable guest house. The rooms with balcony are very pleasant (but a little noisy at night if you have a light sleep, because the balcony overlooks a street with a little traffic. Personally, that didn't stop me from sleeping). The family who owns the guest house is very friendly and the children are adorable. A place where we feel good!
