The hostel is in the centre of Kota Kinabalu, in Chinatown. The reception is on the first floor, there are four or five floors in the hostel. We have a room with air condition, a fan, a shared bathroom and breakfast for 61 RM. The room is nice and clean, the staff polite. There is Internet, of course! Only later do we learn what Internet and what breakfast they have.
So the Internet is slow, very slow, sometimes, there is no Internet at all! And breakfast is dry noodles with black coffee. The cheapest breakfast in the world!
If you are on a budget, I can recommend this hostel.
But watch out, the neighbouring restaurants close early, at 6 pm, if you are late you go to bed hungry.

good air condition

I am one of the teachers of a group of students from Australia. We stayed in reasonable hostels around KK but unfortunately booked 3 nights at Fat Rhino. I would have immediately moved elsewhere but had to stay because of students. I was placed in a room  over the live music bar. It is so loud that even with my noise cancelling earbuds on full, I could hear it. For 3 nights I couldn’t sleep before 12am. There were men I think living permanently in the Hostel and I would go to the disgusting bathroom and they would  have the door open standing in their underpants. The bedroom doors are not hung properly so they bang loud which is not what you want to hear when the music finally stops. Also be aware  the Sunday markets start setting up at 5am. Now for the bathrooms. On day 3 I complained to reception they had not been cleaned for 3 days. I knew this as there were marks in the  bowl that would not be there if they were cleaned. I had to step over a dead cockroach until I complained about all this to reception and they cleaned. Saying that, no moping was done as one bathroom still had mud on the floor. Put it this way, the students and myself took our shampoo etc to shower at the islands rather than here. The showers  are basically and toilet cubicle with a handheld shower so everything gets wet. The only clean toilet is in reception because staff use it. Oh and it’s bring your own toilet paper as they don’t supply it, breakfast is noodles and some days bread. I lay here awake again writing this as I cannot sleep with the music. I told reception they should not put people in the  rooms above the bar without telling them. Thank God we leave this disgusting place tomorrow and I am exhausted from lack of sleep, staff are nice and that’s it. Don’t stay as there are better hostels in the area still close  to everything.

Worst place I have ever stayed in

Decent price for room with queen bad, fan, and sharing toilet. However the loud song and off key singers from open bar down stairs can be a nightmare for someone that need privacy. But for someone like me, not a big problem. 

Nice place, noisy neighbour

Staffs are very accomodating and they are helpful. the lobby is clean. the noise downstairs is nice and would not affect the female room. but the shower dont have hot. the faucet is broken pls replace a new one.
Also i suggest to make some instructions when guests check in regarding the hotel toiletries and its coffee or anything which is free. because i stay for 3nights without knowing that there's a free coffee and bread in the morning. but overall satisfied guest here :)

Affordable and staff is very attentive to all queries

Don’t stay here, it is next to a bar that plays very loud music until 1 am, the rooms are small, dirty, and in need of renovation, the bathrooms are not to be spoken of. Save your money. Just got here and want to dip but already payed for the night.

Dirty, smelly, loud, run down

A friendly staff, disposable, smiling, with a very clean reception and coffee room. For the rest, I've never seen that. I stayed three nights. When I arrived, I was surprised to see the condition of the common, dirty stairs, sticky ramps in some places, coffee down the hall to access my room. At my department, nothing had changed. The room, for the weather when it works, looks like a laundry laundry. Don't leave your underwear bags because it's condensed. Dirty bathroom, the hunt hadn't been pulled. I had to fill the tub with the shower to make it work.

I didn't put horrible out of respect for the staff.

On my trip to Borneo Malaysia (June 2017) with my backpack and smile, during my stay in Kota Kinabalu, my review of the FAT RHINO HOSTEL accommodation is as follows: General rating: GOOD. But I would not stay here again. Very positive: - Price ratio. Positive: - Common area, terrace, although I think they are poorly used. - Breakfast in the morning, good! and coffee throughout the day! - Negative: - The hostel is located on beach street where every day there is live music and picnic, you can tap your bed or sleep well. - Sometimes it's easy, sometimes it's annoying. - Very negative: - Internet access. - The worst of the way, just like the terrace, is the same as the terrace. - Exclusive - The most important things are the use of the internet, and the most important things are the lack of proper air, perhaps the lack of proper air, and the lack of proper service, the lack of proper air, and the lack of proper air, and the lack of proper service in the area.

Mochila and Fat Rhino Hostel.

We booked an extra double room with bathroom to have our own bathroom again. The bathroom was so dirty. Overall, it looked like it hadn't been cleaned for a long time, and there was still some strange hair in the sink. Also, a live tape plays right outside the hostel every night for a very long time, which set the bass to make the bed vibrate. The staff were very nice and helped me book the taxi in the middle of the night, but I would never come here again.

The bathroom hasn't been cleaned in a long time.

We stayed for three nights, the rooms have bedding and everything is very clean; in the reception they are passing the vacuum continuously. They have wifi, hot water and towels. For the price enters the breakfast (toast, butter, jam and coffee/tea). Just below they have a terrace with live music, tourist area, I think until 00:00h, and it seems like you're playing them in the room.

There's a water cut right now in this hotel, so we haven't been able to shower or use the bathroom or wash our clothes by hand for three days. We have to rinse ourselves with bottles of water that we had to buy and then ask the receptionist. According to the hotel, the cut comes from the department and the whole town has no water... which I can't believe... I mean, don't go now! For the rest of us, a noisy hotel with a group of about 30 young Americans and giving a concert in a square or concert every night from 9:01 to 9:00, room that smells like, breakfast is really the minimum of...
