Funky Mamaliga Hostel

I was booked at Funky Mamaliga by Retro Moldova Hostel though Booking.com. 

I have stayed at approximately 200 hostels/hotels in the last 4.5 years on 6 continents. The Funky Mamaliga is the 2nd worst hostel I have every stayed at. The staff here are the laziest, most inconsiderate individuals I have every met. One speaks NO ENGLISH and seems happy about it. I ask about a store (magizin) no help. No restaurants within 2 blocks of here. No maps of the city. The sitting area they occupy in the court yard looks like a homeless person is piled up. Guest sitting in the court yard are bombarded with their loud music. They play it loud and you can hear it blasting over your music on your headphones. They talk loudly among themselves. They have personal guest show up and make out all night. They are still around in the mornings.  They don't empty thrash cans in the sleeping quarters, kitchen or bathrooms. The area around the washing machine smells of sour clothes. They do not restock toilet paper in a timely manner. At 7:00 p.m. they were out, 7:00 a.m. the next day it's still out. They leave beds dirty until someone wants to rent them. The majority of hotels and hostels strip the used sheets immediately and remake the beds when people leave. At 10:30 p.m. they are cleaning and making beds. Lights out occurs at 10:00 p.m.(2200 hours) at 90 % of hostels. The room lay out is asinine. The single beds headboards block the windows from opening. The rooms are as hot as Dante's Inferno. Reversing the beds would not only allow windows to open but headboards would block the hall light from shinging into the room. That's right the bedroom has glass panels. 

I used the thrash can that was full of thrash to tie off and block open the window for ventilation and the staff untied the window and moved the thrash can without emptying it. They didnt empty it my entire stay. The light fixture has one light bulb. The owner needs to install a ceiling fans and put screens on the windows to stop mosquitoes. There were 4 lockers in the room. Only one locker had a key that worked.. Two lockers were locked closed and one had a key that didn't work. 

The kitchen looks like a "$hit hole"! If the staff is not going to monitor that those that use the kitchen clean it up then they should keep it clean. It should not have leftover food and dirty dishes for hours after use. 

On Sunday August 25th that had a party with loud music till about 0400 hours. Most nights this ended at 0100 hours. Again staff is lazy, rude and inconsiderate of the guest staying here. 



2nd worst hostel on 6 continents 

We were a group of 23 people and at first we had a bit of a problem, but then they behaved greatly with us. They carried our luggage in the car so that it wouldn't be loaded, the site is super nice, the individual rooms are new!! The truth is I would recommend it.

Incredible and the caseros very kind!

Really liked this hostel. It had an good atmosphere, relaxed and punctual. Clean 
rooms, 15 minutes max from centre. Good for a groupstay!! Boss also does tours to Transnistria, you really should consider this, we liked the one day trip and his stories!!! 

Good hostel, great atmosphere

We were guided by the cheerful and cheerful appearance of the hostel at the time of booking: pleasant staff and an acceptable breakfast, but the rest was left to be desired... the beds were not very comfortable and the bathroom was not well taken care of...

Not very well.

During my stay it was at full capacity. Good music being played throughout the hostel. The beds aren't very comfy and there were mosquitos. The location is ok. Not far a bus stop to the bus stations. About a 15 minute walk to the center. Staff were ok. Show and toilet were fine too

Would recommend to young travellers

Decent party hostel 

I found Funky Mamaliga in April of this year. I enjoy staying in this hostel every time I come. I like the location: the city center, transportation to all areas of Chisinau. Very friendly and qualified staff. Always clean and cozy. I like that you can cook food. I like the inner courtyard very much, when choosing the hostel its presence played a decisive role. This time it was also very pleasant to visit Chisinau on Wine Day. And despite the crowded hostel, there was no hustle, no disorder. The staff were exemplary with the influx of guests. Thank you very much for the comfortable stay.

Wine day in Chisinau

I stayed for three nights at this hostel during my trip. The location is good and the accomedations are pleasant and cozy. The bathrooms are quite dirty, and cockroaches were spotted more than once. The kitchen is also not the freshest. And the staff seems more occupied with doing vodkashots during the evenings than acctually make sure that the rooms and common areas are in peak condition. 
Would i recommend it? If youre not picky, then sure! After all, the bohemian atmosphere is central to the experience

Very average...

I've stayed here way too many times and it's always a great stay. Helpful staff, plenty of space, clean and welcoming. Visiting Chisinau - definitely recommend this place. Plenty of outdoors seating, quite often there are some parties and dancing going on - so lots of fun. 

Nice and chill 

We didn't stay at this hostel but we arranged to do an organised tour to one of the local wineries, Milestii Mici, which is recognised as the largest in the world. This was planned to be one of the highlights of our time in Moldova and we emailed them prior to arriving in country to confirm that they could arrange this, which they did. We then visited them on arrival into Chisinau and confirmed the final arrangements, three days prior to departure.

When we turned up at the agreed time on the day of the excursion, we were informed that it could not take place as we had missed the slot to go! Apparently, they had been contacted by the winery to say that the slot we wanted (Fri pm) was unavailable and we could only go at 8am on Friday morning. They sent an email to us after 10pm on Thursday night informing us of this, which we never received. Consequently, we did not turn up for the 8am pickup. Despite having our mobile number, they confirmed that no attempt to contact us by any means other than the first email was attempted. They were also quite indifferent to the fact that, given that we were leaving the next day, we would now not have sufficient time to rearrange to go another time. 

We were left very disappointed with no ability to make alternative arrangements and will now have to leave without being able to visit here, owing significantly to their poor communication. Based on our experience we would not recommend them for tours.

Unreliable for providing tours

I had no idea what a hostel was until today... I was in complete confusion. The guy who hosted us was basically normal, the situation was scary starting from the gate. We arrived when it was already dark on the street, the gate and the fence had no sign of light, we reached the entrance. There was disappointment inside us, dirty everywhere. We had seven girls in the room, breathing was nothing.
