This cosy and well organised friendly family run guest house is your home from home. The owners are so kind and as he is a good lawyer and get you off the hook in case you've been scammed by the more expensive hotels. Sure, it's a little cramped but that is cosy, if you're British and you love Filipinos you will love this place. If you are looking to spend money and want a big room they have those too. It's up to you and everyone is welcome at Berlay Backpackers, enjoy!

Berlay Backpackers is absolutely brilliant

I booked this place through Agoda for a group of four.

The hotel advertises a shared room with 6 bunk beds for up to 6 people......what the hotel doesn't advertise is it's in fact a very large room divided into several areas partitioned using very think curtains, each area containing bunk beds for 6. Disgusting. even at the P1,100 price.

Fortunately, the hotel staff were gracious enough to put the group into a family room for 4 with private CR and shower. But, the room door was broken, the window had panes missing and replaced with pieces of cardboard, and general comfort was (you guessed it) close to non-existent.

I should have checked the reviews on TripAdvisor before booking it.

Falling apart......believe the bad reviews, they're sadly true.

Dealing Business unprofessionally- The management did not honored our confirmed reservation thru Agoda.
why? Because that time, Davao hosted the Civil Engineers Convention participated by 8k plus Civil Engineers and Civil Engineering Students. Hence because of high demand for accommodation, they catered walk-inn customers and cancelled/refused all who booked and paid online. 

The Receptionist has an unpleasant attitude. No apology and explanation to us, she said she don't care if we booked and paid online. She was just following the instruction of her Boss- the Owner. I insist to talked to the owner/manager, and she replied to me in a high toned voice: " just wait here the owner of this hotel is a Lawyer". 

Waited for 30mins no Owner showed to us, tired and exhausted from a 12-hr land trip from Surigao to Davao, we decided to left and look for another accommodation.

Not Recommended for tourist, this Backpackers Inn ruined the friendly and hospitable reputation of Davao!

Do Not Book Here!

They will warn you with this:

"Hello, please be informed that Berlay Backpackers is a basic budget place for sleeping" 

*** blanket is like a handkerchief cloth 
*** beddings are old worn out ugly cover 

"As such, please be informed that we will not fetch you in the airport, or provide you with a welcome food and hotel kit. " 

*** not even a towel, urghh!! We asked for a towel and extra but they ran out of available ones

"Our rooms are not as big as star hotels."

*** very very small
*** cheapest motels in metro manila for P300-500 are way way way better

"Our rates are low, basically, because we only offer basic sleeping need"

*** this is crazy, even the cheapest and the motels in metro manila for P500 will provide you with good customer service. An okay bed and a towel for 2 and basic toiletry!! 

 "All rooms are fully air-conditioned , with own TV, and CR"

Wifi is strong in common areas, signal in the room may vary depending on the location.

Nope please, not here. You deserve a better sleep even if you're just a backpacker. Find another place with almost same amount that you will be treated nice.

Very Depressing - you get what you pay for

I was told that this place was new (started just Jan.2016) but was surprised to see everything inside looks old and creepy. 

--Doors have this creepy horror sound when opened/closed and I think it is infested with termites already (from my 2nd flr room)
--Cable wires hanging everywhere. 
--Staff were not mindful of the noises they make while walking along hallways in the morning, although they were very accommodating and friendly
--Bugs, insects and cockroaches greet you at night upon return to your room. 
--dusts and ants everywhere
--they don't change towels unless you request for a new one which you have to pay for Php20 each
--with the rotating brownout in Mindanao, the generator can only light the reception area and not the rooms
--this is the saddest voluntary work I had because of this place😞

Totally disappointing!!!! Not recommending this place at all!!

I usually stay at one hotel in the entire duration of my stay. But experience has taught me that location is in direct proportion to the location. So sad I had to cut my stay at this place short because of the location. 

PROS
-VERY FRIENDLY PEOPLE in this hotel. 
-cheap accommodation (so far this is the cheapest having a double bed and en suite bathroom for just P500)
-room has a double bed, unlike others who just has single beds but offering the same price or even higher
-room has en suite bathroom
-has lockers at basement
-clean towels and sheets are provided (just not sure if they change it every day of your stay)
-wi-fi is free but only up to the second level

CONS
-yes, as mentioned by another reviewer, the stairs going to the upper floors are very, very narrow, and they don't have elevators. And for somebody like me who is wide and dislikes stairs, it's really a hassle going to the fourth level.
-no trash can inside room
-no cabinets or even hooks or tables to put stuff or clothes on
-en suite bathroom is very, very small that you literally will be forced to lean on the wall when you sit down and take a dump
-sink is right in front of toilet bowl (and yes, no bidet)
-hot water system is for the more expensive rooms only.
-location not too good - far from the tourist spots. However, you can  take a ride right in front of the building. (taxi cabs are plenty)
-disadvantage for smokers since it has no smoking area inside. 
-no windows
