A nice and cozy family house, rebuilt a few years ago and kept spotlessly clean. A comfortable place to rest, relax and enjoy nature. And the surroundings are absolutely magical! 

Also, the host (Rita  is a great cook so be sure to try her meals!

A great family place in one of the most beautiful places in Azores

We spent 2 nights in this cozy casa run by Rita and her family and can definitely recommend it for 2-3 nights if you are looking to get away from it all. Prior to our stay, there were a few misunderstandings due to lack of pre-arrival information so before you book, you might want to know:
- you need to walk to get there, either for around 2,5 hours from the top (from Serra do Topo) or for about an hour from the west (Faja dos Cubres). 
- we took the trial from the west; this is the easier & shorter hike, plus they can pick up/bring your luggage for €20 (one way) on a quad. If you choose the luggage option, be sure to give them an arrival time a day before and to pass through the little town to the 2nd parking place (we waited at the 1st place for some time)
- if you want breakfast (€4 pP) and/or dinner (€15 pP), be sure to tell them in advance
- you can also bring your own food, store it in  the fridge and use the kitchen
- there is no internet; electricity is only available from 8 - 11 p.m., so bring your headlamp! 

Once you have done the effort to get there, it's all worth it! Rita and Ruy were very accommodating, sweet and made a superbe dinner for us!

Friendly casa at a quiet location - can only be reached on foot!

I thought of giving you a few tips about Casa Do Tio João ... But before to start talking... I can only tell you : go there!!! We loved so much this experience in the Azores... Amazing surroundings and lovely hosts! We had a great great time over there and I can only recommend this place if you are looking for calm, fusion with nature, relaxing activites...What else ? Go ahead!

As it was a little bit difficult for us to understand what was the concept before booking, i thought of giving a few explanations here on Trip Advisor and above all : give my positive recomendation !

(please note that as soon as you book the accommodation - on Booking - you will receive a full email from Rui and Rita (our lovely hosts) explaining you everything anyway :) 

SO : 

First... Casa do Tio do João is located on the Fajã Da Caldeira de Santo Cristo. 

What is a Fajã? It's a landslide due to earthquakes or lava fields tongues throwing itself into the sea. Very fertile pieces of lands and very good for agriculture. 
This is the main characteristic of São Jorge. You have many fajãs all around the island but this one (Sante Cristo) is known to be one of the most beautiful.

The access to the house is done by 2 pedestrian trails. 

First Trail (Serra do Topo - Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo). This trail Is 5km until the accomodation (about 2 hours). It is recommended to do this trail to reach the Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo as it goes down and you enjoy a magnificent scenery.

Second Trail (Fajã dos Cubres - Fajã da Caleira de Santo Cristo). This trail is 4km long, and has an average duration of 45 min by foot. It is recommended to leave the Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo with this trail.

There are no public transportations to get to the start of the trails. You can either go by taxi or rent a car. Casa Do Tio do João can also provide this service at a cost to be confirmed with them, which we use!  

And if you have heavy luggage or groceries, they can take them down to the fajã with the quad. To be discussed with them :)

You ll get all information you need once in touch with them. They will explain everything to you! And we can guarantee that you will have such a great time!! 

You ll swim in the lagoon, relax, enjoy the sea, the garden, the surroundings, you can make BBQ.. There is also a great typical restaurant over there! But no supermarket! So, plan your groceries!

Caldeira de Santo Cristo has a beautiful story, but this, i let you discover it once you ll be there. Go to the interpretation centre, they ll explain everything to you. 

And another tip: take the big breakfast option... :) you won't regret it! Ahaha!
