Disappointed with myself and the hotel. I was disappointed at myself for assuming, assuming breakfast was included - it wasn't - assuming there would be parking or parking refunds - nope - I have stayed in lots of similar hotels at similar prices and these are givens - I should have read the blurb. I was disappointed with the hotel after being given a small double with sea view - it was a sea glimpse standing on one leg hanging out the window - the view was bins and an LED streetlamp that blindingly  penetrated the curtains all night - the blinds dint work - mind you one of the bedside lamps didn't either as it was close to hanging off the wall. The showroom was cosy .... very cosy ...... I had to take the loo roll off the holder to have enough room to sit on the loo (and I'm not that big). But what really got me was the lack of the room being serviced - apparently it doesn't happen (never ever come across that before). The staff were great - asking for more tea bags for our morning cuppa we got them but overheard was another member of staff saying "we aren't supposed to give more out" - possibly a joke?  The hotel is tired and a short walk along the main road to the town (no footpath for a few hundred metres) - the food was ok but  Aberdyfi has better places to eat and the pub in town has a better atmosphere. Bottom line - an interesting stay because I had forgotten what barely adequate looked like - such a shame.

An interesting stay

Really warm welcome, cosy atmosphere and friendly staff. Stopped for a coffee and a bite to eat, food was excellent and will definitely be returning in the summer to enjoy a meal with the view of the ocean from the outside seating area. Dog friendly too. The manager welcomed us in out of the rain with a treat and a blanket for my Lurcher Marley. Fantastic service.

Fantastic service and atmosphere

Great family friendly pub. Food is delicious. Staff are friendly, welcoming and will always try to accommodate requests. Sunday dinner is great. The Easter Sunday menu was lovely. We love the Penhelig and will always go when visiting Aberdyfi.

Love the Penhelig

We visited on a Thursday on a lunch time we both had a steak and a few drinks. We were very impressed it was warm and welcoming. We will definitely be back. The menu was great with a lunchtime special too. It was a busy and friendly place  to be. There is so an outdoor eating area with a view of the Harbour 

Fabulous food and drink 

We stayed in a suite on Friday 1st March to Monday 4th. A lovely spacious room and very clean with great views and a nIce private sitting area outside, we enjoyed the fact we could park the car nearby. The staff were very welcoming and friendly and we enjoyed having a beer in the bar. The meals we had including Sunday lunch were very tasty. We can say we will definitely be returning to the Penhelig Arms

Lovely weekend away!

The bar staff didn’t seem very interested or happy. There was no welcoming feel in the pub . The decor was tired and the beer okay but not memorable . A few people were eating but the food looked not worth the price

No welcome at the inn

Thursday night went for steak, food and young staff were amazing to the point we rebooked for the Friday 8/9/23. Only to be met by a rude older thin barman who's attitude to customers was awful. No smile, please or thank you, very abrupt. Food was lovely I have to say. Just the experience at the bar was not.

We will never be coming here again, the bloke (I think the manager) was so rude, no hello what would you like, please or thank you! Waving the card reader in your face without a word! Manners don’t cost anything!

Fantastic stay ay the Penhelig. Team were fantastic.

Dave the manager could not do enough for us, from carrying our luggage to our rooms, making sure we had a quiet table for dinner as my son is Autistic. nice to have a manager who cares so much about his guests

Great Manager at last

Our suite 16 was tired and lacking in some amenities which we would expect in a hotel displaying a 5 star AA rating eg no bottled drinking water. despite  us being an outside walk away via 40 steep stone steps from the bar the staff of whom seemed embarrassed to charge us £3.80 for 2 small bottles of what even budget b&b s provide as standard. To then be told that it is not Marstons policy not to provide this basic to their guests was surprising! The door into our suite was badly damaged and would only remain closed if locked with a key .On enquiring why ,we were informed that it had ,quote, been' kicked in' by the staff to gain access following an incident some time ago .Why then had it not been properly repaired? Why ,when we checked in as booked ie a married couple, in addition to a large double bed was a further fully made up double bed settee taking up space? There are 5 parking spaces marked out on the area to the side of the 4 suites presumably in order that parked vehicles don't obscure the view over the estuary. Is any attempt made to enforce this? Not on the evidence of our experience. All these observations are in themselves minor but cumulatively combine to have made our stay not the experience that it ought to have been. To try and end on a more positive note, the staff are obviously trying their best to paper over the cracks, but you Marstons need to do better, starting with an obviously overdue refurb.
