Only spent one night here.  My wife and I were aiming on low budget, but wanted to avoid the usual chains of hotels.  This was a very pleasant surprise.  The Glen Rothay is charming, clean and full of character.  The breakfast room dates back 400 years.  We missed the nightly ritual of feeding local badgers and due to a tight schedule we never had time to sample the delights of the Badger Bar.  Breakfast was served with a smile and no request seemed to fluster the professional and friendly staff.  
The hotel is situated in the most idyllic spot in the heart of the Lake District.  A 20 minute walk to Rydall Cave was most rewarding and it's only a short drive to Ambleside or Grassmere.  We are looking forward to coming back for a longer stay.

We loved the Glen Rothay, it is a fantastic hotel with lovely staff.  Our room (Ullswater) was beautiful with a view of the river. The public rooms all had open fires and were cosy and warm. The food is great, especially the pie. Breakfast is delicious. We saw badgers every night which was a bonus (never having seen a live one before). We didn't want to leave and hope to return.

Exceptional

Booked in here and then missed time slot , the guy on bar sorted us a new slot and so pleased he did as we had a lovely meal  and dessert plus couple of pints sat in the restaurant , then moved to cosy bar next to fire and met the resident Collie Dog kooki. Then to cap a wonderful night were informed thart live wild Badgers were outside the bar , we sat and watched these beautiful creatures for a while . Great NIght

Driven past this place many times over the years but decided on an impromptu visit yesterday. I must say we can't wait to re-visit in the spring. From walking in to enquire about a vacancy to leaving after breakfast, we were treated with the upmost respect. Dinner & ales in the Badger Bar were great. Lovely conversational atmosphere with good background music. Amazing sleep on a firm mattress, great shower, in what is alledgedly, the least expensive room? Great breakfast, even though we were a little previous. Superb. Thank you to the 2 young ladies in the bar & young man at breakfast. Sorry, I didn't get your names

Impromptu visit

I stayed in the fabulous Daffodil room in the cottage with my dog Ned. Lovely room and huge spotless bathroom. All the staff were really friendly and helpful. We will be returning. my friends were staying in the main building and also enjoyed their stay. The food and beer in the Badger Bar was excellent.

Fabulous place and wonderful staff

Very poor dinner service. Dinner reservation was “lost” and they didn’t have a table for us. Luckily one became available. We waited 35 minute for our nachos starter and then when our mains arrived the restaurant was basically closed while we were sat there without anyone checking on us. Had to go to the bar to ask for someone to come clear and box up some leftovers. 

Room was ok but not worth £175. Bed smelled musty and pillows smelt dirty tbh. Stains on bedsheets, dirt on floor etc loud ventilation noise came on periodically throughout the evening/night that woke us up as well.  

Breakfast was mediocre at best. Poached eggs were hard boiled and sausages were over cooked and hard.. at least we weren’t forgotten about this time though. Worth it for the badgers but would not recommend staying here for the price, we’ve had better quality from a premier inn

Don’t bother paying £175++ for this

I arrived at the Glen Rothay after a VERY long day of driving up from the south. Being an (don’t hate me) American, and having been given a larger rental car than expected, my nerves were a bit frayed by the time I arrived. But being greeted by the lovely staff, and most importantly, the bestest and most handsome boy Kooki the Collie, I immediately began to relax. My room (Ullswater) and bathroom are clean, comfortable, and beautifully appointed. My dinner downstairs was delicious, and I can’t speak highly enough about how wonderful and friendly the staff have been. I have another night here but already feel so relaxed and at home. Absolutely recommend this place if you are traveling to the lakes. And Kooki is such a sweet dog- I’ve been missing my own pup at home so getting some pets in really warmed my heart. Best employee and I might have asked if I could pay extra to have him sleep on my room 😂

What a phenomenal gem. Such a perfect location. Not too far from Ambleside, but right next to Rydal mount (literally!) and wonderfully picturesque. It’s no wonder William Wordsworth chose to live over in this area! 

Hotel is wonderful. We were in a little cottage and the bed was wonderfully comfortable, as were the pillows. The bathtub even fit my long self! (5’10”). Staff were wonderful. Breakfast was delightful and highly recommend the pies. Also GOT TO SEE THE BADGERS. If I could give this place a 10 I would. Definitely stay here!!!

Absolutely amazing gem

When we arrived there was a mistake with our room, as a consequence we were upgraded.  The Room was outstanding comfortable, big and clean with a walk in shower. We were in the cottage up a slight hill towards the back of the hotel.  The breakfast was good with a good choice for vegetarians and vegans.  We had the full Cumbrian which fuelled us for the day.  We also ate there in the evening.  The food was excellent and plenty of it.  The beer was also good especially the Great Corby Tizzie Whizie, the only slight issue we had was the bar shut at 10:30 but they didn't hurry you out.  It is just across the road from Rydall Water which has a couple of good walks round it.  However the highlight of the stay was watching the badgers feed.  They don't come out until it is dark (which in June meant 23:00).  They also have a live camera feed that you can watch.

Superb location for a couple of nights in the Lake District.

Following a poor meal and a beer in a nearby Inn we tried this grand looking place. For the exact same price for the four of us we had full plate meal,; stuffed full steak n ale pie and chips was filling.
