Hidden gem!!!
Immaculate room with great view and super comfy bed! Shame I'm only here for one night! Will definitely return, and recommend to anyone visiting the area.
Quality residence at a very reasonable price . Dontknow why TripAdvisor nedds 200 characters  to post!!


Hidden Gem!

Stayed here for one night.

The good:
The location is very handy and has the advantage of being close to the town centre but away from the pubs and avoiding loud patrons
The staff are friendly and helpful.
The building is quite modern and clean inside 
There is a nice bar area with very affordable drinks
The bedroom was clean and had a nice en-suite

The bad:
Not many negatives but there is a big one. I'm not a plumber and don't profess to be an expert but there is an incredibly loud noise when I presume someone is using the taps/shower/toilet in the nearby rooms. This started before 7am and intermittently went on and off all morning. I'm a very heavy sleeper but it woke me up and I was unable to get back to sleep it was that loud. 
The breakfast is very modest - a small selection of yoghurt, granola and some toast was all that was on offer for food, and for drinks it was instant coffee and apple juice. 

Overall it was very nice and I was almost going to give it 4 stars. But the noise with the waterworks (again what I'm presuming was waterworks) was a big negative on an otherwise lovely place with nice staff

Nice spot but a big problem

Really clean and modern feeling hotel, where you are made to feel very welcome and very reasonably priced to boot. Will definitely be back, the views of the marina were amazing, and plenty of family-friendly things to do/see as well as plenty of lovely eateries a short walk away. Could not fault the breakfast either, could not recommend more. 

Fantastic family-friendly place

We called to check for a room at last minute as we were in a difficult situation. They had already closed due to covid-19 but the owner Trevor went above and beyond to accommodate us. Fantastic service received in our stay there and I will definitely be back to visit again.

Absolutely do not go here I’m only still sat in the lounge to complain but no one wants to listen I actually got stuck in the lift as it was not working no more to be said as my Solicitor will now take this up

we chose this location to be handy to visit family.  friendly. clean and above all nice and cosy.  we were on the top floor and the view out of the window was lovely even in november.  It was a wintry night. so you heard the wind but felt safe and warm.

Review for Astala Lodge, Bangor, Ireland.
2 concerns.
1. We booked to stay here for 2 nights last weekend. We were 2 couples in 2 rooms. We booked through Booking .com.
I requested in a separate email that if possible, could we have 2 rooms overlooking the Marina? The reply was 'no problems we will allocate you rooms with a view'
However on arrival only one room was facing the Marina, the other being at the back of the building. We wanted our friends to have the room with the view so we took the back bedroom, room 8.
That for us wasn't a big problem, but the noise on Sunday morning starting at 5 am outside our window was. It was either a generator or boiler or similar starting up and continuing intermittently until we finally went down to breakfast. It was so loud it was impossible to sleep through it.
We spoke to the owner who said he had no idea what the noise was, he had never heard it and no one had ever complained about it!!! We found this hard to believe. We reiterated how we had been willing to take the back bedroom even though we had been assured a room with a view, but this was too much. He said all rooms were the same price and for our second night we could have a different bedroom but it would be smaller. No partial refunds. So we stayed in the original room. Monday morning the noise started up again but not until 7.45 so some improvement, but the owner still maintained he didn't know what we were talking about.

2. This is a first for us. As usual we had guaranteed our booking by credit card. Also booking.com had stated in our booking Ts and Cs re: Astala Lodge
'This accommodation provider accepts the following forms of payment:
   Visa, Euro/Mastercard, Maestro.'
On arrival the owner asked that we pay in cash, as 'it would be easier'. We weren't prepared for this, meaning we would have to find an ATM and withdraw a large amount of cash for the 2 nights. More complicated for our French friends with us as they were paying everything on their french credit card.
However it seemed we didn't have a choice.

At the time of departure we paid in sterling, but still had to ask for a written receipt as this was  not automatically being offered.

So having spent 2 nights in Bangor wouldn't go back. Not much to offer except nice view of the Marina.
Stay at Astala Lodge if you can pay in cash. Do not rent rooms 7 or 8. Cannot speak for the others but our friends had room 10, nice large room overlooking the Marina.

Be warned

I don't like writing negative reviews but the bed we had on our two night stay here was absolutely horrible - the mattress cover was so thin that you could feel the box springs drilling into your back.  I even slept on top of the duvet fully clothed (using the bath towel as a cover and taking a sleeping pill) because it was impossible to sleep otherwise.  No one should pay money for that kind of experience.

To be fair, not all aspects are terrible.  The location right by the marina is great and there is free parking.  The wifi was great.  The L6 breakfast was very good and we like the manager, Trevor.  But the main purpose for being there was to sleep, and we were having back problems for days afterwards.  That bed should be condemned.

Worst Bed Ever

We stayed here on a recent visit to Bangor. The room was comfortable with all amenities.
Bathroom was a little tired with cracks in the bath panel, celing and washbasin.
Hospitality was very good and breakfast also good at a very reasonable price.

Comfortable with good hospitality

Owners were very friendly. The breakfast was lovely though you had the feeling to share the table with everyone else, as all was very "close" and keen-eared.
The location is just lovely - close to the harbour. Room was nice. Actually quite in line with all other B&Bs I know from Bangor.
