I needed a B&B fast as had a possible two weeks work driving, starting the following day. The Whistle and Flute and a room available at a really cheap rate which i booked for an initial 5 days but told them it could go longer which they agreed was no problem. After driving for an average 10 hours a day covering up to 500 miles a day I just needed a shower and somewhere warm and quiet to lay my head. This place was perfect. The staff were helpful if i needed them but mostly left me alone had my room cleaned and ready for me each day when i got back. I was out by 4am most mornings so cannot tell you what the breakfast was like but otherwise have no problem in recommending this place. It was clean and basic and comfortable. It was perfect for what I needed.

Basic, warm and friendly

Stayed a few times. Parking can be very difficult. And then it’s not great having to queue in the bar to get the key. And the rooms are dark and they feel dirty. They’re not great. And the last time I stayed I got got well overcharged, by more than £100 for one night. And although I got an apology I still didn’t get the full difference in the refund. Sent a few messages but no response whatsoever so time to leave my review. Obviously not stayed since and won’t again.

Really not great

Had a day off and caught the train to this great pub and the food was superb. Large portions, well cooked and piping hot. Good selection of gins too 😜 . Great little find and we will be back for more

Superb lunch with friends

If you like good wholesome food this is a great place to eat. We had Yorkshire puddings filled with tender roast beef and plenty of vegetables. It was excellent.
Right next to the railway makes it easy to visit. My husband loves rail freight so this was the place to come.

Staff friendly and service good.

4 of us went for a meal, the table was booked for 6.45, we got our meal at 8.15, I was quite worried as I am diabetic and needed to eat early, no such luck, and the restaurant was by no means full.  I ordered steak and Ale pie, with chips and veg, it had obviously been heated up in a microwave, the gravy was congealed on my plate, the steak was absolutely dreadful, I couldn’t chew it it was so tough, in the end I gave up and left it all. Another friend ordered haddock and chips, whilst he ate most of it, you could tell it was grossly over cooked, no one came to take our plates away, the waitress was at the bar texting on her phone, we weren’t asked if we wanted a sweet, or a coffee, so we went to the bar to pay and complained about my pie, the chef came out eventually ( who was apparently the owner), there was no apology, she was quite abusive, and said she hadn’t had any other complaints, she knocked mine off the bill and stormed back into the kitchen, totally embarrassing, I couldn’t wait to get out. Then there was no itemised bill, so they hand wrote one out, and they had overcharged us, will never enter that place again.

The worst meal ever

Checkin was in the Bar the lad gave me good directions to my room.
The room was in a seperate part at the back of the pub a single bed a dressing table with a few drawers and a few coat hangers on a hanger no wardrobe.
Shower was good plenty of hot water, rooms cleanliness was ok, I slept well for 2 nights in the single bed.
Had a meal in the restaurant on the Saturday that was nice.
Had a few drinks with locals in the bar.
All in all not a bad place to stay you get what you pay for.

OK FOR THE PRICE

Booked this as a random last minute getaway.

Looked nice on the website we booked it through, and had good reviews but in reality it's needs an exterior refurb as in doors and windows. 

It has low ceiling tiles. Tiles that are easily replaced rather than creating first impressions per the photos.

When we entered the room, I automatically thought of a dry cleaners - the feel of the air and the smell.

The bathroom looked modern, but unfortunately the build-up of calcium deposits on the shower handles and taps, make it feel filthy.  The shower stall lacks space for the fuller figured people! Lol

The bedsheets didn't fit the mattress, coming down about two inches on the sides.
We booked a double and got two singles.

The carpets needed a good cleaning never mind vacuuming.

The glasses provided in the room were disgusting and the breakfast glass still had residue and bits stuck to it, from its previous use.

Paid for breakfast, but had the same guests as we did for our evening meal the night before.  Flies!  Annoying.

I hate giving this place negative feedback as the staff were lovely and so were the bar locals.  Very friendly. 

It's beside a train station but we never heard any noise from the trains.  Just the noise of our neighbouring guests.  The fire doors in the corridors bang loudly and noise carries easily.

Fair enough it was cheap, but cheap reduced prices shouldn't mean less quality.

Disappointing

Actually deserves a minus star if that were possible. Stayed one night after a wedding. Bed broken so had no choice but to sleep on the floor. Made worse when complaining to discover the landlady was aware the bed was broken but still felt it acceptable to let out! If I'd been charged £20 I could accept you get what you pay for but she had the nerve to charge me £75!!!!. Requested a refund and was told she 'wasn't a dishonest person and would refund in full'. 2 emails and numerous phone calls which she never takes later and still not been refunded. Pay for a taxi home rather than stay in this place. Make sure you check the other reviews properly as those with decent reviews are for the restaurant not the b&b and are mainly from prior to this new landlady taking over.  Do not waste your money on this dirty, tired place. Avoid!
