Fantastic Sunday lunch- the starters particularly the pork belly were amazing and the roasts were excellent- huge portions! The staff were amazing especially as our dog had been missed off the booking form so they quickly turned around a table for us!

Excellent Sunday lunch

If anyone had told me as a child growing up in newton Aycliffe that I would go for an enjoyable 2 night break in a hotel by a busy road in Bishop Auckland,  I'd have laughed. This hotel proves how things have changed. We received a friendly and efficient welcome. My brightly decorated room was, like the rest of the premises, spotlessly clean. Unlike many hotels, the room was not stuffy and overheated but the radiator was easy to operate should warmth be needed. The bed was very comfy and, the biggest surprise of all, not a single car could be heard, which resulted in (unusually for me) 2 nights of  relaxing sleep.
       The cooked breakfast is superb quality - good quality bacon, etc and a freshly cooked egg. Hotel mushrooms are most often sloppy and greasy but these were so amazingly succulent I could have eaten a bowl of them. I needed nothing more until the evening. On the second day my hot breakfast was the American pancakes with fruit compote. These style pancakes  are most often stodgy but at the Park Head they are as light as light can be. The raspberry compote was not over-sweet either. The chef pops out from time to time, and he is a real, jolly personality. The waiter/restaurant manager was very pleasant and efficient, too. Oh, and the hotel coffee is actually drinkable - rare indeed!
        My husband has a few diet complications at present so we didn't stay for what was probably a very pleasant evening meal because the menu lacked nutritional information on carbohydrate content, etc.
      In terms of decor, the pictures could really have reflected local themes and artists instead of a 1970s look. As for my room, the lighting needs a bit of a rethink. Bit dark for writing on the desk, and the bedside light position couldn't be adjusted for maximum  reading light. The shower appeared to be a disabled one (no operating instructions) and could only be used hand-held. It was also a wet room design, which I found hazardous. The wash basin was absolutely, unnecessarily tiny (it is a very big bathroom) and had no plug. Nevertheless, the bathroom was as spotless as elsewhere. Like the kitchen, housekeeping is a very high standard here.
        It would be churlish to knock off any points when I had a thoroughly enjoyable stay in a well-kept and well-staffed hotel with a very pleasant atmosphere to which I hope to return later in the year. The hotel is in a very good position for a variety of attractions be it the art trail, the Prince Bishops' Palace, Shildon Railway Museum or just some lovely countryside. In terms of what it offers it is amazing value.....worth it just for the mushrooms alone!

Tremendous value and quality

Booked last minute for the tea time special on 4th April, which just happened to be my wife's birthday. All six of us really enjoyed the food . The slow cooked beef with dumplings was a triumph, as were all our other meals! Our sincere thanks to the entire team for your warm welcome and professionalism.

Fantastic

We visited the restaurant with friends and the atmosphere and decor was lovely the staff couldn't do enough to help so polite and friendly and very knowledgeable about the menu and helped us with our choices, the food was amazing 3 of us had the steaks which were cooked to perfection and I had the burger it was lovely the chips were amazing and the staff passed our comments on to the chef.
It was nice the staff took the time to talk about the food and told about upcoming offers aw well.
I would definitely recommend a visit we certainly will be returning.

Great night with friends

The room set up we had was ideal for a family with a teenager or two. Two rooms and a lounge area with a sofa bed. Room 1 was incredibly spacious and just what we needed after moving my eldest into Durham uni for freshers week. My concern, as we sat and watched tv on the sofa before dinner, was the road noise as the hotel is on a main road, but we decided the traffic would calm down at night, which it did a bit, but we were certainly aware of it Most of the night . However, we were told that quadruple glazing is going into the rooms at the front of the hotel and this will certainly make a huge difference to those in these rooms. The bedroom in room 1 at the back of the hotel was definitely much quieter, it was the soft mattress that caused my sleep issues but I appreciate some people like a soft mattress and it’s impossible to please everyone.
The room itself was clean, modern and very ver spacious. The restaurant downstairs was really lovely too. All the staff were very friendly and the food was amazing.
We will be obviously be returning to Durham, we have an Ev so the Ev points are extremely handy 
And I would give this hotel a second chance - as lovely and spacious as room one is though, I fancy trying the courtyard next.

A modern place to stay with a great restaurant

We stayed for one night and the hotel was lovely. Great location, very quiet 
We had dinner in the hotel which was really good. I had the lamb shank and it was faultless. My boyfriend had the steak and ale pie which he highly recommended. 

Also had a full English breakfast before checking out. 
Highly recommend it to others. Great staff and fab hotel and restaurant

Excellent hotel and restaurant

Unacceptably slow internet.
Noisy rooms with sound leak from adjoing rooms and the busy road beside it.
Overheated.
Bright flashing LEDs on the smoke dedectors over your bed.
A missed opportunity for a decent hotel which this area sadly lacks.


Disappointing.

From the initial booking, through a change of booking date, through to the stay itself the Park Head Hotel delivered on every level. The customer service was exemplary (thank you Daniel), the hotel clean and comfortable (even if a little away from the town), a large car park and the restaurant pleasant with some very nice food.

The room was spacious with a really comfy bed. The evening meal was very nice and the restaurant was popular (not only with hotel guests). Breakfast was really good (can't fault the cooked breakfast). But overall it was the welcoming, friendly service that was so nice. We would certainly stay at Park Head Hotel again when next in the area.

What's Not To Like ?

Grateful to find this hotel - about the only one local - and loved the staff.  It is bright, light and fresh, and very nicely decorated. The courtyard with its terracotta pots, and pretty planting is just fabulous for a summer sun-downer. I am sad to have to report therefore some negatives, and the manageress did offer me a free glass of wine in compensation. But I should have received my money back.  I had to ask for soap in the shower dispenser after the first night. And on the third day, the room was not refreshed at all: dirty mug left by bed, towels not folded, throw left on floor, refreshment tray not replenished - even after I mentioned it. The staff clearly did not know how to make a bed: the under-sheet not anchored at the head, and no hospital corners.  Beware if you come by train: all taxis are contracted for the school run. I had to walk half an hour into town, as the bus was held up by an accident. If you do get a bus for the return trip it takes at least ten minutes to cross the very busy, fast road and there is no traffic island, or crossing anywhere near. Durham County Council take note. This is a new hotel, and its first summer season and I'm sure with a bit better attention to the housekeeping it could be a winner.
